I've got a story for you...

I always tell this story to playing partners that I randomly get paired with on the course.  I figured I would share it because its quite the story.  A few years ago, I was playing in a scramble.  One of my friends in the group is a degenerate gambler and will literally take any bet any time, anywhere.  He is also around a 20 hcp.  We get to a Par 3 where they have a 10 foot circle painted around the Pin.  You could wager money and get double back if your ball landed inside the circle.  If not...it went as a donation to a charity.  

 

My gambling friend says, "I wager $10,000."  They had a high school girl working the hole and she says they have a $20 max wager.  My idiot friend starts acting like a total jackass saying there is nothing in writing limiting the amount of the wager etc...   We had to let several groups play through because he wouldn't give it up.  They finally had the tournament director out there and eventually convinced my friend that they would not accept the wager....they couldn't pay double back etc...

 

My friends tees it up and jars it.  This of course reignites his previous jackass behavior.  It was a ridiculous and embarrassing scene but the look on these people's faces when he aced it was something to see.

Sounds like the kind of person I wouldn't want to play golf with much less be friends with.

Has your friend been an a-hole his whole life? Was it his upbringing or is he just a bad person? 
Anyone who goes to a charity fundraiser and persists in attempting to place a bet the charity can’t cover and then makes a scene, including harassing a teenager, is despicable.

Your friend is a toxic narcissist who can’t read cues; a $20 max. wager on a hole being monitored by a kid is all anyone should need to know. 
Oh, the wager is not in writing? Gee, it’s also not in writing that your friend’s continued participation in the tournament was welcomed. The director should’ve offered to refund his entry fee and told him to leave.

Oh joy, just what I'd want, a random story from a random playing partner....  of all the stories you could tell, what in the world makes you pick this one?  You are who you associate with, I'm not sure I'd be advertising I'm friends with a guy like that.

Maybe a bit harsh....i mean i get asked to play in scrambles a lot with friends of friends etc. Some of them are people i wouldn't hang out with much. Maybe OP is just more acquaintance with this jabroni

 

I actually think it's a good story

Maybe, but this dude clearly has some issues he has to figure out and deal with.  I have very little tolerance anymore for people not owning their bad behavior and resolving it. I'm not sure of the age of the original poster, but this stuff is cute if you're college age, but by the time you get into your late 20's it's no longer that or amusing.

Oh yeah i agree, the guy sounds like a real piece of crap. I just mean it could just be a poor choice of words from OP. I have friends of friends etc who are jerks and embarrasing to be around

I could see myself telling this story to a stranger if we were already on the topic of idiotic behavior on the golf course, but I don’t know that this is the story I would ‘always’ share with people I don’t know. To each his own, I suppose.
