Stealth 2 Plus Spin Reduction - Tinker with Weights?

SheriffBooth

Recommended Posts

I've been testing a Stealth 2 Plus with a AD-IZ 6X and while it feels great and I like the launch angle, the swingweight feels a little light and it definitely spins more than my Ping G425 LST (CK Orange 60X).

The Taylormade has 2 15 gram weights installed.  Any suggestions as to swapping these weights out?  If I make the front slider weight 19g instead of 15g what should happen to the driver characteristics?  How about if I swap both weights?

In general, the effect of swapping weights will completely depend on your face impact location and consistency.  Is that something you've been monitoring?

But a quick answer is that just changing one 15 gm weight to a 19 gm weight isn't going to do much to the head characteristics - other than increase the total head weight - and therefore the swing weight and head weight feel.   It's not going to do anything significant to the MOI or c.g. location.  And what that head weight feel change does to your swing and results is something you can only answer by testing it out.

I've not spent time on impact location, but in limited testing I've found the head to be much more difficult to close versus my Ping, even with the front weight in the draw position.  My best strikes launch higher and spin more than the Ping, and my mistakes all have much more side spin than I want.  Ultimately, the Ping is clearly a better fit for me, both in distance and dispersion, but I was hoping that by tinkering with the weighting I could get the numbers more comparable, because I do really like the way the TM looks and sounds.  Seems that chasing that avenue might be a waste of time. Thanks, Stuart.

Sounds very familiar.  For me it seems to be because TM "neutral" face angle tends to be more open than in the Ping heads.   Have you tried lofting up with the TM heads?  Not so much to see if the launch/spin improves - but to see if the face angle might be a possible root cause for the issues with the TM heads - particularly with the ability to get the face closed.

When it comes to changing weights - it might be but you never know.    The first step should really be to address the face closure issue before worrying about launch and spin.   If it's not face angle related, it might be general swing weight related.  Might try going lighter to the head weight (or shorter for playing length) to maybe speed up the release.    Some do find that messing with heel/toe weighting can effect the ability to close the face - although I haven't found that's the case with me all that much.

It's already a 10.5 head and when I tick that closed it launches way too high.  Need to try the 9* head closed and see if that does anything.  But I think ultimately I'm just going to stop being stupid and stick with the Ping, lol.  I did find that moving the front weight toward the setting a bit helped to straighten things out, but the poor swings are still way too far right, whereas with the Ping my best swings have a slight draw and my mistakes just bleed right, not spin off the world.

That doesn't matter for testing purposes.  What's important is whether you still have issues with closing the face and controlling shot shape and lateral misses.    If it's clear that that results no issue with controlling the face, then it's time to go try a 9* head lofted up.   IF it does not help with the face control - trying the 9* lofted up would likely be a waste of time.

Where's the fun in that?  😁

What's so funny is that I play my Ping one tick open, so that definitely affirms your theory that Ping "square" and TM "square" are very different.

The IZ launches higher and spins more than the TPO.  Crank the head open and see if that helps bring down spin.  If all else fails, you may want to consider swapping out shafts to something low/low.

I've got a Kai'li that I might try just to see.  I know if I crank the face open I'll just hit big slices; it's probably a 9* head turned up a bit that will work best, but I have serious doubts it will be any better than the Ping.

In my experience, more weight at front and less weight at back always reduce spin and launch.

Just picked up a Stealth 2 Plus driver. Don’t have it it yet, but wondering what are the stock weights installed? What do they weight both front and back? I am going to chop it down to 45” and trying to get an idea ahead of time.
