Net Double Bogey hole adjustment for a Modified Par

Recommended Posts

Played in a Michigan Am qualifier the other day. I was a 4 CH, come to the 3rd hole (my 12th of the day). On the regular member's scorecard it's hole handicap is 13, and is a Par 5 (~480 yards).  For this tournament, they move the tees up about 30 yards and call it a par 4. Nothing on the tournament scorecard denotes hole handicap, so if any kind of adjustment was made, it was unknown to us. Since it's a stroke play round, generally this wouldn't matter anyway...

Until I make an unfortunately Triple Bogey (7).

Should this score be adjusted down to a 6 (Net double bogey, since I don't get a stroke on hole handicap 13), or do I go by the normal par designation, at which case a 7 would count?

Doesn't the WHS display your individual hole scores?

Not sure what you're asking? You mean individual hole scores? We have the option to enter it as a total score (self-adjusted) or hole by hole. However if I choose to enter it hole by hole, the par of the hole comes up as a par 5, because that's how the course is normally played.

Can't find anything here but,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Since it is recommended that a hole of 450 yards be a par 5, and you indicate that, instead of being 480 yards it was ~ 450, I would leave the 7 as is; either post the 7 at that hole in HBH as a 7, or enter your own total including the full 7 strokes. JMO.

Without the tournament updating the rating it’s would be hard to say. How was this new par four relative to the top 4 handicap holes?

Relative to what, par? It's kind of a goofy setup. It's a fairly hard dogleg left with OB left (definitely in play) and bunkers at the corner on the right. Needs to turn the ball hard to even get a shot at getting home in 2, and then the green is pretty tiny, being that it's design as a par 5.

As a 5 it's pretty easy hole. Hit a straight tee ball, layup, wedge on...

That's on the very bottom end of that range but well within the range of what should be a par four. It used to be ≤ 470 was a par four given that a scratch golfer hit it 250 and then 220.

It's an interesting question, @larrybud. I'm not sure what the answer would be. How much I care (if it was my score) depends a little on how likely that score is to be one of my 8 counting scores. 😉

I found no guidance in the WHS manual. IF the round was within his 8 best we're talking about .125 max for his handicap index.

Not a major deal but iirc Larry is a "player" so I'm thinking at his level of play, that round, with even a single double (triple ?) bogey likely wouldn't be in his 8 best.

Yeah, so what I was saying is that… if it's not likely to be in there, I wouldn't worry about it much. Just post whatever feels right to you for that hole if it won't affect the index.
