Wisconsin mid-price golf-seeking advice

Hey guys, we are less than 3 weeks from our (almost) annual summer trip to Wisconsin.  Normally we stay in Kohler and play all the resort courses (along with The Bull).  But looking to venture out a little further and possibly spend a little less money.  One of the days, we will be heading a bit south (Port Washington/Milwaukee) and looking for an afternoon round as a single.  The 3 courses I have narrowed it down to are The Bog, Brown Deer and Washington County.  I have already played The Bog and it was a solid/decent course.  Just wondering what your advice is, if you had a choice of these 3.  Also, any good places to eat nearby?

Have already played Erin Hills and The Bull at Pinehurst Farms and have eliminated them for this trip.

Personal opinion...Both Washington County and Brown Deer are better tracks than The Bog.  Brown Deer is a championship caliber course having hosted PGA Tour events in the past.  Washington County may be the best bang for the buck around.  If you haven't played Lawsonia you may wish to put that on your list of possibilities.

Safe travels!

If you need a grinder to make your weld look good, you are a grinder not a welder.

Tough choice between the two and IMO you cannot go wrong with either.  I give the nod to Washington Co. as that's the style of course I prefer to play and look at it, I believe others have referred to it as prairie style (very few trees, Is beautiful and a blast to play.  Brown Deer is also a blast to play, and is a nice tree lined parkland course.  Similar in that both offer plenty of elevation change which is a factor.  Typically both in good condition (nod to Washington Co here).

Those are 3 pretty different courses.

  • The Bog= Similar type of course to the Bull as far as conditions and play style.  That said I much prefer the Bull and think the Bog is overpriced.
  • Brown Deer = Classic, older tree lined parkland style course.   Bit a of history with it as it used to host a PGA tour event, and was Tiger's first event as a professional.
  • Washington County = Much more open type course, and really nice as far as municipal courses go.

You could probably include Fire Ridge on this list too.  It'll be close to where you're staying, while below the quality of the other courses you're looking at, its still respectable.

Of the 3 you listed, I'd personally I'd go Brown Deer, then Washington County, then the Bog.

I do love that The Bull (Nickalus) and The Bog (Palmer) are in competition with one another with their websites.

Venture over to Broadlands in North Prarie.  It's one of my favorite courses.  I'm also partial to Nagawaukee in Waukesha County.  Wash County, I played it a few weeks back but Broadlands is a better time than it is, IMO.   Browndeer is a good shortish track with tour caliber greens if you can get on.

Thx Phreddy, I can always count on you for good advice.  I have played Lawsonia (2 yrs ago) and loved it.  Not heading that far north, though.  I've always wondered about Brown Deer since I was a kid (watching Corey Pavin win).  Might put that on the list.  Thanks.

Cmon, you're on a golf trip.  Drive the extra hour and hit up Lawsonia.      Get there early and do the all day ticket.   Go Links - Woods - Links - dinner in the clubhouse = perfect day

Nice suggestion.  I see this course from the highway when we go by.  I will check it out.

yes they have a great play all day pass which last I checked cost about the same as 1.5 rounds.

You may be right. I was going off of what I was told a while back and the overall cost. Either way it’s hella cheaper than most places especially for the value.
