Ping PLD Limited 1988

This year Ping has  been releasing PLD versions of the PAL, Pal 2, Zing, and Anser models. These four represent the models which were used to win the Majors in year 1988, so Ping is producing 88 of each.

Does anybody here know if the head weights of these putters are the same  315 gram to 320 grams as back in 1988, or is it likely this PLD commemorative group is of the more common now 350 or so gram head weight?

I think they're more in-line with the current PLD headweights.

The zing 2 was 301gms. Ridiculous. U bought it hoping to game it but it was unplayable

The original Zing 2  was 301 grams or the recent Limited PLD 88 Zing 2 was 301 grams, or both ?

Interesting, not sure I'd game a 1 of 88 $990 putter, but the light weight is disappointing. If we assume the PAL and the PAL 2 are light as well, I wonder what the ANSER with the sound slot will come out as?

 

PING will add weight, but they've said these aren't customizable when ordering, so you'd have to ask if they'll do it. But you'd be spending near PLD money if they did offer ZING and PAL heads.

Consider that the 1988 Majors dominance for Ping was achieved by players swinging putters with head weights ranging from 301 to 320 grams.

Contrary to common current opinion, modern head weights are not 350 grams because of "agronomy" or "faster greens" or "shoulder powered strokes". The reason current putter head weights are 350 grams is because mishit strikes with a heavier head sounds/feels fine, and players enjoy not having to hear/feel the sound of a mishit from a 300 to 320 gram head weight putter.

yeah, I love that head shape and figured it would be a decently inexpensive way to get basically what would be a Custom PLD head to game.  Ping said they made them to the exact specs of the winning putters because they didn’t expect anyone to game them either. Eventually, after talking to three people they let me return mine. I’m going to take that money and probably buy a custom PLD

They still all sold out.  My first good putter was a Ping Pal 2 and I will always keep it for nostalgia.  Ping was ahead on design and keep the cost down with casting the head.    Faster green and not a Balata ball combo made heavier milled heads more desirable.  The value on Ping Limited run isn't there for me but I can still admire their history.

Sounds like your question was answered but I bought a Copper PLD Anser with the expectation of gaming it only to find out the head comes in at 380g. And they won’t add a sound slot that would bring the weight into a more playable territory.

Total for fitting and putter is 1450 or 1490 at the moment.

Lines are really sharp. Should have softened that design up a bit IMO.
