Wedge gap

I was wondering about my Wedge Gap. I'm playing off Srixon ZX5 PW at 44° Which I hit full about 120. Then I have a 48° that I hit around 105. A 54° that's around 85, and a 58° that's around 75. The only ones that I usually hit full is my PW and 48° does these seem to be Gapped about right? I have all new wedges so I'd hate to buy more wedges. I am a 6 hdcp so I play pretty good. Was just wondering if anyone else plays 44,48,54,58

I play the same setup currently. Might toy with a 60 if you need a bit more help getting the ball elevated on shorter shots

If your primary bunker club is the 58, I'd recommend bending the 54 a degree strong or replacing with a  52 (44-48-52-58). If the 54 is your bunker club, bend the 48 a degree weak (44-49-54-58). I think 58 is plenty of loft for a LW especially if you don't have super-fast hands

I played this exact setup for over a year, and had a really hard time with the gap between my 48 and 54, which was 20 yds.  The 48 was the set gap wedge, and I just didn’t do well trying to take yardage off with it, so the 90-100 yd shot was a real problem for me.

I finally put the set gap wedge in the hall closet, and replaced it with a 50* that tops out at 100, but for whatever reason, I can take 10 yds off a lot easier than I could with the other gap wedge.  It’s become my favorite and most versatile club.

Can you take a shade shorter backswing and hit the longer wedges to an "in between" distance? That what I do. I go from a 46° PW to the 52° GW and have about 20 yds on fulls.

Yes I can choke halfway down on my 48 and hit it around 97 instead of 105. I'm not really shortening my swing per say but just choking down to hit it shorter

I know this sounds weird, but imo there are wedges that make taking yards off possible, and wedges that don’t, or at least make it difficult.  I don’t know if that’s bounce or grind or both, but it’s something.

Agreed. My irons (4i-PW) are somewhat more difficult to hit partial shots with than my wedges. That is why I practice hitting partial shots with my irons on a regular basis. Practice builds confidence which is vital to pulling off non-standard shots. I have no problem playing a half iron shot under an obstruction because I practice doing it regularly.

I think you're onto something.  My guess is that it's both the bounce and grind.  My theory is that a higher bounce and an old-fashioned grind (ala, Cleveland 588 Tour Action) make it easier to hit partial shots with less practice.  I hope I'm right because I have banished my current Mizuno R12 52/07 gap wedge to the closet and have ordered a Cleveland CG One 52/10 wedge from Golf Galaxy to replace it.  I know the CG One is a relatively lower tier (possibly discontinued) wedge in the current Cleveland lineup, but it has the look of the 588 TA with a little more bounce (10 vs 7) than my R12 and a no-nonsense all-purpose grind.  I think it'll match up nicely with my trusty 56 (an antique 588 TA sand wedge).  Looking forward to putting it in the bag.

I'll get really weird with my own quirky suggestion.

For me the single biggest thing that makes 1/2 swing wedge shots easier (other than practice!) is to have my wedges bent a couple degrees flatter. Right now my 54 and 60 have been adjusted flat but haven't quite got around to doing the 50. All Vokey SM8's. It's amazing how much less often I'll dig the heel in a little on those in-betweener pitch shots with the 54 and 60 than with the 50.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
