Getting to P2

I am having a tough time getting to the correct P2 position. By the time I get the club to parallel to the ground on the backswing my arms have swung too far. I’m essentially not setting the club quick enough or hinging my wrists early enough to get into the right position. Does anyone have any advice or drills to get into that position earlier so my hands aren’t so high by the time the club is parallel to the ground?  No matter how aggressively I try and set my wrists I can’t seem to get there. Thanks!

This classic drill will train the correct wrist set (caveats: most modern players have a stronger grip so the toe is pointed down a bit at P2, your hands will move straight back or slightly in while you’re setting your wrists in a full swing, and when you get to full trail wrist extension varies from P2-P3.5):

And here’s a full takeaway video from a very good instructor:

Just based on what you've said, rather than a video, if you want your hands to stay lower then

1. Push down on the handle with the pad of the lead hand during the takeaway

2. Lower the lead shoulder as you turn it back.

Another drill you can do is the stenson/Cowen press down drill. Go to the 1 minue mark.

Helps to have a good grip. But you push down with the lead hand on the butt end of the grip and pull up on the handle with the trail hand.  You also want to get the trail wrist into extension and while pronating the trail forearm.  This way you can hit p2, not open the face too much and not get too much radial deviation.

Thanks for the replies everyone!  I will watch the videos and try out the tips / drills. Can someone help me with these terms?

Pronating the trail forearm - for a righty what does this mean?

Same with radial deviation, any help with that is appreciated.

Thanks.

First one is turning palm down in right one.

Second one is setting the vertical hinge in the wrists

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Oh man, you don't pronate and extend while you're externally rotating?

Yeah, that’s one of the most non-intuitive things about the swing - turning the steering wheel left on the backswing, and right on the downswing (until the last moment before impact where it turns back left, unless you’re holding off for a cut). Most beginners and high caps do the opposite.

I've heard of the malaska move but this sounds wild. Do you have any links to videos elaborating on this? I just can't get my head around turning the wheel left on the back swing.

I've always used the old imagine the shaft extends a couple feet past the grip and it rides down the lead thigh in the back swing.

It’s a feel thing, and only for those who get too laid off going back and/or too steep coming down. It can be overdone of course.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
