Cutting an Odyssey Tank Cruiser 7 down from 35 to 34 inch

Hey GolfWRX Nation,

Needing some help from the experts on this one. I bought a brand new Tank Cruiser 7 counter balanced putter on Ebay for a very reasonable price. Since the jailbird isn't being made in LH (at least for now) I wanted to see what all the craze was about and this is the closest putter I could find that wasn't going to bankrupt me. As you know the Tank Cruiser 7 came out several years ago and came in a 35 and 38 inch. The one I bought was a 35 inch and came standard with the 15 inch SS counter balance grip. After several rounds with it, I'm not in love with the counter balance, so I'm thinking of converting it to my standard length 34 inch and putting a standard grip on it. I believe what makes it counter balanced it the grip with the extra 15 gram weight in the top of the grip and not the shaft or head itself.

If I cut it down to 34 inches and put a standard grip on it will it not be counter balanced anymore and become a standard putter? I believe the answer is yes, but I'll ask for some confirmation

If it helps, I've been putting with a 34 inch evnroll ER2 for the past 2 seasons and like the Odyssey 7 shape better and besides that, my distance control is much better with the Odyssey with the WH insert.

Thanks all

I did this exact thing but from 38" to 36". There is a counter weight in the shaft as well as a back weight in the grip. The cruisers are not super heavy so when the shaft weight is removed you end up with either a 365/375/385g putter with a regular grip. I like having a heavier putter anyway.

@BYKThe head has 2-15 grams of weighting in it and 15 grams of weight in the grip, total weight is 370 grams. I would like to take it to a local golf shop and have them remove the counterweight plug to give it back to me, so I can re-install if I prefer going back to the counterweight option.

I'm not sure a shop can remove the counterweight.  It has a hole that could be tapped to take a machine screw thread.  That would make it easy to pull out.  But most they likely aren't set up to do that.

Hireko and others sells replacement counterweights made out of brass and steel for both graphite and steel shafts.

They are so cheap that a shop would just put in a new one.  I bought some  on Amazon to save on shipping costs.  Amazon has an amazing delivery infrastructure.

Hi OP @jmagri78 ... it might be easier to simply re-shaft that putter

i.e. so that you still have the counterweighted shaft (if you wish to go back to that later?)

... a replacement putter shaft would give you that almost plug-and-play option

Hey all,

Wanted to run another question by you guys. I'm thinking of just replacing the original Odyssey countercore grip that came with the Tank and installing the Winn grip Hovland uses.

Has anyone done this and what results have you seen? After holding the Winn grip, feels like a better fit in my hands, but thought I would ask the larger group about your experiences, thanks

Not a 7 but I have a Tank Cruiser 1w with the Winn 15” grip and I love the way it feels. I tried several different counter balanced grips and this has been my favorite so far.

@a_fay22 Perfect, thanks for the comment and the picture. Which length do you have 35 or 38?

It’s actually now 34”

@a_fay22 Did you screw the weight back into the top of the shaft when you removed the grip and regripped with the winn grip? I just had the same grip installed and elected to not screw the weight back in and just went from the 15gm to 20gm weights in the head

I bought the putter off of 2ndSwing and it was already 34” and did not have the weight in the shaft when it came. It came with the 15g weights but I just added lead tape to the bottom of the head to get it where I wanted

Can you guys provide additional feedback on this grip on a counterbalance putter? Just cut off the SS grip that came with the Odyssey 7 tank cruiser putter and didn't elect to screw the 15 gram weight back in the butt of the shaft. It feels a little lighter that it was originally, but I already can take it back and have them regrip with the weight installed

That grip weighs almost 130g which is basically the equivalent of a normal Odyssey grip + counter weight, except with the Winn it's spread out across the whole grip, it shouldn't need additional counter weighting.

All of this is entirely feel based though, I'd stop worrying about what other folks think about a grip and just figure out what feels good to you

I'd definitely have to agree with the personal feel aspect, and it was really just trial and error (mostly error) for me, I spent almost all summer trying different grips.  I tried several variations of a Superstroke counterbalanced, which I've used on putters on and off for a good 6 years or so now I'd say.  But besides the weighting, the shape of the Winn just felt the best in my hands.  I wasn't really interested in the round  shape of the Superstroke XL anymore, I experimented with the wristlock grip (not actually using the wristlock method), but for me it was the shape and the feel of the Winn grip in my hands that won me over.

@a_fay22

@rooski

Thanks for the comments guys. Yes, I agree it's all about personal feel. Due to the grip being so heavy, I think I will have it installed without the counterweight and see how it feels. Worst case scenario, I pay $17.99 for a new grip and have the counterweight added.

 I could be wrong but i would imagine removing the counterweight would make the putterhead feel heavier. But as suggested, the grip itself is like the original Grip + CW combined so makes sense with the distribution its a little lighter feeling as the weight is not all concentrated at the butt end.

Enjoy the putting!
