Arms Late (Hands behind trail leg at P6) - What has worked for you?

Recommended Posts

Curious to know what has worked for some to get their hands further forward at P6.  My arms are perpetually late.  I have tried so many different feels but nothing is clicking so hopefully someone may have some insight.  I have a lesson coming up this Saturday with @MonteScheinblum and I am pretty sure this is what we are going to work on.  Main issue is lack of power and inconsistency which is maddening.

Feels/changes I have tried which dont work even at slow speed:

  • Shorter Backswing
  • Punch Shots
  • Keeping back to target
  • Tour Striker Smart Ball swings

Feel/Changes that slightly improve position:

  • flexed lead wrist (swing gets very laid off)
  • elbow chasing belly button (wipey thin shots)

I have put significant time into each of these and combinations of items above, but still cannot get there.  Beginning to think there is an issue somewhere else that I am chasing a symptom of.  Couple videos as an example.   Curious to hear what has worked for others!

Face On:

DTL:

And for fun, here is one just using arms to see if I could do it:

(removed this video as my fun experiment derailed the thread)

Whatever you did in that last video, don’t do it ever again🤪

I wanted to see if I could get my arms going before the hips...I recall you said you and AMG guys had a bet that no one could do it...I think I hurt my back a bit and my dog left my side after that swing (embarrassment?)

It’s physically impossible to start a downswing with the arms, as long as there is gravity and your feet are connected to the ground.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

In my opinion, it's not a good idea to start a thread asking for advice 48 hours prior to a lesson.

By the looks of your swing - you've watched a ton of different YT videos and tips on the golf swing.

Go see Monte on Saturday and ask all the questions you need to.  Then avoid making a thread about your swing for at least a few months 🙂

What’s interesting is @Nels55 did the same experiment several months ago.

In this example you could not have used less body rotation than you did. This is why so often people are wrong about what causes this look at p6. They call for “accelerating the arms sooner” — well you could not have done a better job of that here. 😂

I’m not saying there isn’t a time and place for certain feels. But these experiments show plain as day that this type of thinking can be a harmful 2d oversimplification.

Pretty clear what's going on here...holding in explosive diarrhea and trying to finish the 18th hole in the simulator round...

I think my intent may have been misconstrued...asking to see what feels have worked for others so when I work with Monte I have some different feels to try out under the eye of a professional.

I watch zero YouTube videos on golf swings...there is no point.

Do you take medical literature with you to the dr?

I already know how Saturday will go. You'll walk in and tell Monte what is wrong with your swing and what you want to accomplish. He'll see you take 3 swings (he only needs one, but might make you take a few more to get the video) and then he'll tell you what you REALLY need to work on. 😉

And he'll be right.

Getting proper sequencing doesn’t mean shutting one segment off altogether.  It means delay, not restrict.

It’s like driving a stick shift car.  If you let the clutch out all the way and try and shift, you grind the gears.

You can hold the clutch in a split second longer or shift a split second earlier……or a little of both.  If you hold the clutch down and never let it out, you wind the engine.  In the last video, you held the clutch down way too long.

I’ve seen hundreds of 3D captures, many of which I took myself.  Every time the hands trailed at p6, the arms sequenced late and/or in the wrong direction.  3D is where I learned where the issue was.

Since you have that lesson coming up I would keep your head clear of anyone else's ideas, seriously. You can bring ideas into a lesson if already have an established relationship with the coach AND they're pointed towards things you already have a decent grasp on or are physically able to do. If you have exhausted many things on your own without success then that means you're going to need someone to physically show you how to do it right, so clear the canvas and give the paints to Monte and go from there.

One bit of advice though, never practice this stuff in socks. The ground forces you need to pivot properly (especially you aren't currently) are extremely difficult without traction. Always wear something equivalent to what you'd wear on the course.
