More questions about Srixon Zx5 and Zx7 irons.

Jackal

Recommended Posts

I'm going to a Srixon demo day Friday.

I'm interested in the Zx5/Zx7 mixed sets

The shafts at are most appealing are the NS Modus and the KBS.

But any shaft they want me to try is doable.

My main question is  what iron do most people separate the set with?

My ball striking is decent, but Zx7 in the longer irons doesn't sound good if it's an off day.

There are a lot of sets with the 7 iron on down being a Zx7.

My thoughts are the 8 iron down.

5 iron is always  the longest iron in my bag, other than a driving iron sometimes.

My swing will usually let me hit irons that are too advanced for me in the 9 iron and PW.

This is just to get opinions of the ones that have mixed sets, or went with Zx5 because the Zx7's weren't forgiving at all to them.

Hopefully this demo rep will have quite a few choices, but usually they just have 7 irons with a lot of shafts.

Thanks

Jack

Whether you choose the ZX5 or ZX7 7 iron, I’d play it at 32*

24-28-32-36-41-46 would probably work well.

Jmho but I wouldn't combo. Sole of the 5's is quite playable as is the top line. By not combo'ing you don't need to work on gapping

While I haven't seen them I person, the x5 & x7 soles look identical.

That made me wonder about all the combo sets being offered.

From looking at your signature, do you go from a ZX5 44* PW to a 52.5* GW?

To me, the benefit of combo sets nowadays is getting forgiveness in the longer irons without having jacked lofts in the short irons that screw with wedge gapping.

Good question. I recently had my wedges bent back to standard to see how they played with standard bounce. Not really finding them all that  different in terms of playability   ....previously the 52 was bent to 50 and 56 to 54. I'll see how it goes between the gap and PW, can always bend em back again

I play ZX5 3/5 irons (3 is functionally a 4 iron as all lofts are weakened for 4* gaps) and ZX7 6-PW.  There are definitely times I wish I would have gone for 5's deeper into the set as I had previously played a full set of 5's in the first generation.

If I was ordering today I'd probably go ZX5s through 7 iron and then jump right into Z Forged for 8-PW.  The ZX5s are just easier to hit straight and high, and while the ZX7s are forgiving for the class of iron they are in, the 5s benefit me more as a low ball flight player.

I have the following:

ZX4 4i, ZX UT 4i

ZX5 4i - 6i

ZX7 7i - PW

I found this works well for me. I rarely use the ZX4 4i, but will alternate between the ZX UT, ZX5 4i and a 22* hybrid depending on how well I am swinging.

from a pure fitting perspective you should transition it where you start seeing a drop off (carry gaps or 5mph ball speed differences) as you go lower in loft. Some people might be at a 6i or some might be at a 4i.

Its nice that ZX iron series blend so well especially in the longer irons that you just need to figure where that break point is for you.

I went ZX5 in 5 and 6 iron 1° weak, and ZX7 7-PW standard lofts.

I like the ZX7 in the lower/scoring irons for a bit better control of trajectory (keeping the ball a bit lower on windy days when going for slightly tucked flags).

The ZX5s are so powerful that even though they go high, they still cut through the wind when I'm just trying to hit the ball somewhere on the green. 🤣

This is kinda what I'm thinking/hoping.

The demo day is tomorrow. It's supposed to rain, but as long as it isn't storming, I'll be there.

If you’re a decent ball striker I think you get plenty of help at a 5 iron and don’t need that extra “help”

I think once you get to 3/4 iron, mentally you’re already thinking it’s going to be harder to hit

That's my usual thought.

Somehow it seems like the 4 iron needs 'help' getting airborne.

Some of the clubs like the P790 seem too big and clunky with the large sole.

What feels and looks better to me are the players cavity backs like the Mizuno irons.

I just don't have the game to be pull them off all the time.

I came from Mizuno MP-59s and finally got over the ego of taking any help I could get

I played with the idea of Mizuno pro 225 and p790 but like you said too clunky

The ZX5 seemed like a good middle ground at 4 iron.

Thanks,

That helps me a lot.

Some of the best irons I've hit in the last 2 years were P770s, but something still didn't feel right .

I hit some Zx4's regular flex last week.

The shafts were wrong, but the head felt smooth as butter.

yeah good luck!

i did end up going with a Mizuno 225 3 iron to use as a driving iron. The P770s were right up there but Mizuno feel was better for blasting an iron off the tee down the fairway.

I play all ZX5's but was contemplating a mixed set at the time. I would have gone with 8-p in the 7's but its personal preference and whatever works best for you. As others have mentioned, regardless of what combo you go with, make sure the lofts are in order. That might require a few of the zx5's being bent weak or zx7's bent strong. Also, the setup with modus shafts is perfect (to me).

I'm looking forward to trying the Modus shafts .

I see a lot of info on them, but haven't seen any local to try .

Hopefully the Srixon demo will have some ZX/Modus setups so you can give them a try. 120's are popular so I would guess they would at least have those as well as maybe 105's and 125's.
