Seeing and hearing really good things about the new Max driver. Definitely is on the list to test.

I have a couple of questions hoping some of you with more knowledge can help me.

Did a couple of fittings and the stz and stx came out on top, with TSR2 a very close second.   My swing speed is under 90mph.  The problem with my swing is my spin is way too high.  Working on it.   The Darkspeed MAX with high launching UST shaft was so bad it was laughable.

I have a feeling I hit the Mizzys well because of shorter length,  but also for sure lower spin.  So if I get the ST 230 Max at 45.75" do I lose what I had with shorter stz and stx?  Or if I cut down the Max to 45.00" does that defeat the purpose of the Max?  Lastly the Max is supposed to higher spinning, which hurts me because of my not so great swing.  My misses are at the heal.

What's confusing me is I am a slower swinger and theory says high launch and high spin is better for me but its not the case.   The STX 230 felt amazing.

Thanks.

What are your spin numbers? At your speed, spin isnt necessarily such a bad thing.

I am a slower swinger with high spin, too. And, I am, also, working on it - and getting better.  There is an optimal window for launch angle, and, spin - too much, or, too little for your swing speed will cost you distance (see - https://ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin).

As for the ST Max vs the STZ, or STX, you should try them for yourself. I have a STZ 220 10.5 w/Ascent Red, but, in trying some of the newer drivers, I am getting fit into lower loft heads. Talk about confusing, but, our swings are unique to ourselves, and, what works for others may not work for you, or, me.

If you are hitting the STX 230 well, you could save yourself some money vs. the ST Max.

What is your angle of attack? Usually hitting down on the ball with a driver will cause spin to increase dramatically.

Yeah thought about trying 9.5 degree even though conventional wisdom says go higher loft.   Definitely going to hit the MAX.

With the Darkspeed MAX  5000  - 6000.  There is no way that is good.   Ball went 160 yards.   With the stx 230, under 4000.  Went much farther even with less swing speed at times.  Kai'l blue 50 shaft.

What is your shot shape and club path?

Pretty straight.   My club path miss is a pull.  Club face miss is on heel.

Ok so path is steep left with a heel strike. The spin issue is caused by path, angle of attack, and strike location. Drivers just do not perform well when hit heel side. I don’t mean to be a jerk, but a club isn’t going to fit that. If you use the most upright setting, that can help slightly, but you have to move your strike location more towards the toe side and higher on the face to reduce spin.

Why not give the STG 440 a spin? (No pun intended lol).  It’s low spin and perhaps not as unforgiving as other 440 releases from other OEM’s in the past 10 years.  MGS has already indicated that this driver is a performer in their Most Wanted testing.

Thought that was for better players  🙂   I actually liked the stz as well.  Spin was down.   So I could buy stx or stz now. But wondering about MAX.

Additional question if I buy the stx or z with a custom shaft (aldila) does that mean it's no longer 45.0", but 45.5?  I like the shorter length.   Thanks much.

Unless you specify otherwise, the club regardless of shaft will be built to 45.75 inches. Presumably Mizuno will adjust the swingweight with a higher back weight for a shorter build.

Specs on Mizuno website still state the length at 45".  Can you confirm that the length of any custom shafts would be greater than the 45" on the website?

The Max appears to be 45.5” standard although they keep throwing around this 45.75” number in the reviews and what Vosh said.  Note the STX and STZ are at 45” standard.

60° rule is how USGA measures clubs for conformity. Lengths on USGA’s device measure longer.

So is the driver 45.5 inches or 45.75 inches? lol. Presumably most shops would measure it at 45.5 inches using their scale?

The length is to the end of the grip if using the 60* measuring system.  If Mizuno states 45.5 on the site using this method, that is the length with the grip included.  Mizuno has always measured without grip until this year.

So it looks like the Max driver is 45.75 total length, including the grip, 45.5 without.
