When Nike came out with the mock neck shirts I was a massive fan, still am. The primary wearer for these just so happened to be Tiger, therefore I guess I do fall in that category of having 4 TW shirts and buying because of him. It is tough though because Nike just hasn't been very creative with apparel as of late. If Tiger creates his own brand will I buy a polo or 2, maybe. Guess we will just have to see.

If you don't follow golf much, what would you know about Tiger say in the past five years?  For this group, it was that he crashed his Genesis and screwed up his leg.  "Is he even playing this year?"  And that a guy had a tee shirt with Tiger's mugshot on it.  And "didn't he win the masters a couple years ago?"  Which, in fact, is coming up on five years ago.  

 

Nobody could point to any Tiger branded clothes they bought, or even knew about.  

 

Meanwhile, several own Jordan shoes and we often discuss the new Jordan releases as I would post images from other Nike players like Brooks, Finau etc.  

 

I don't think hardcore golfers realize how little Tiger actually trips the meter in terms of apparel for average sports fans.  Yet everyone knows about Jordan shoes.

I could see that if you only got into sports in the last 5-8 years.  But if you watched SportsCenter from like 1997-2016, there's no way you could miss all the Tiger highlights with his full Nike gear, golf fan or not.

 

It's like somebody saying, "Oh Gretzky? Dustin Johnson's father-in-law?  He played sports too, right?"  Because what has Gretzky done in the last 20 years.

One interesting thing is that the last nike TW product ever released was a re-release of the TW Masters edition lol. I was going to return mine before this news dropped because the black and green together just was not doing it for me but I may have to keep them just for nostalgia's sake plus I  may need them once I run through my white and grey pairs. 

 

Enjoying the speculation but I suspect that, as was the case with most TW apparel in the last ten years, the outcome will be underwhelming.

Taylormade already has an apparel range in Asia, not sure they would buy a competing company.

Exactly. Tiger / TW has brand equity like nothing else in the sport and gives Nike credibility in golf but I'd imagine it doesn't translate to anywhere near the ROI Nike would want. 

 

The reality is that golf apparel is such a fragmented market in ways most other sports are not. Just look at the boom of smaller golf apparel brands that have blown up in the last few years. Greyson, Peter Millar, Rhoback, G/Fore, Bonobos, Linksoul, Bad Birdie, Malbon, etc. all are coming for a slice of that pie. Not to mention the emergence of the athleisure types (e.g. Lululemon, Vuori, etc.) that position themselves as selling golf clothes that can also be worn to the office (and look more stylish than a polo with a Nike swoosh) and don't show any signs of slowing down.

 

It's just way too easy/cheap to enter the market. All you have to do is make a stretchy polo and find YouTube/IG influencers to pump the brand (like Rhoback did) and all the sudden you're quickly stealing marketshare away from Nike. Meanwhile, Nike is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on guys like Tiger, Scottie, Rory, JDay, etc. and seeing less and less people at their local muni wearing gear with a swoosh. 

 

It's not hard to see why this is a losing proposition for Nike.

I feel like Nike ended the relationship in part because Tiger hasn't been playing obviously. I know people are saying they didn't make any profit. But he hasn't been around and the other tour pro's don't have the same impact on the game as he does. Where Nike failed was by letting other companies control the influencer market. They didn't even put there foot in. When Tiger went out, they should of jumped right in to the top youtubers and influencers

My son wears Air Jordan basketball shoes.  I think they're really good looking and well made.

But Nike TW golf apparel?   Every time I tested Nike stuff it felt lower tier quality.    Nothing premium about it.

I think Nike could have done way more with TW than they did.

I have a few older TW polos and they're still going strong, as are my OG TW13s & 14s...

Fast forward 10 years I have a TW frank print T-shirt that I bought last year which faded after 1 wash.

The older TW stuff is much better quality, I agree. I used to be on Nike staff and the things I still have from 2011-2016 are great, even to this day. I think the quality started to change coincidentally, around the time of his car accident. Mainly, the material they used didn’t seem as premium as it once had. Even the polos from 2019 and 2020 are much better quality than the last couple years.

nike has always made crappy tees if they’re not dri-fit. I have the GOLF one, crappy and cotton. 
 

However all my TW shirts are great. But these are $100+ shirts.
