Remote video lesson-Which platform do you use?

Recommended Posts

We are researching potential partnerships and trying to understand the major and minor players.  Would like direct feedback from the community on personal experiences and platforms used. Both from the instructor side and student side.

Has anyone use skillest or another platform in addition to in person instruction?

OnForm has been a nice surprise.  Very intuitive to use and it doesn't hold your videos hostage.  You can export them to any device, file, or cloud service you choose.

This from a guy that's used V1 for over 20 years.

Onform has a Coach & Athlete edition. Coach is iOS only. They only have the Athlete edition on Android. So if you're a Coach with a Google, Samsung phones you're SOL. OnForm was based on HUDL Technique but the story is long there. Last time I talked to them there are no plans for an Android Coach

So @Gxgolfer check if these partners are iOS  & Android availability

I used V1 when I was signed up with Graves Single Plane. Very seemless to send them my videos. I'm no longer signed up with them but they still use V1 last time I looked. Another competitor CMR Golf uses V1 as well

The app I am looking at is VisualEyes on Android. Relatively new. UI can use some polish but it's the only app that is Coach like with the plane lines etc. Good replacement for the once legendary HUDL Technique

Hope this helps

Thanks for those who replied. What would recommendations be for first time instructors or students to look for in terms of remote or hybrid app use besides plane lines, os compatibility, and output?  Doesn’t seem like too many universal options on both sides.

There isn't too many at all.

Right now, imo, V1 is probably the better bet. I can't say anything about OnForm Coach because I don't use iPhone

I haven't figured out VisualEyes yet, still playing with it but at least the developer is reachable for bug reports

I use ZOOM with my ATEM switcher. I do 99% of my remote lessons live. Golfers wear earbuds and if they have decent wifi/LTE/5G connection, everything is pretty darn good.

I practically have a TV studio at my Studio and I still have to hand hold my iPhone to video the student's swing.

There needs to be an add on to zoom to capture live video and do "line drawing" as easy as a good iOS app (I use Coach my Video pro).

Android just sucks as a platform for swing (or any athletics) recording (I say this as a die-hard Android guy too). For some reason, even after all this time, Android still has not created an API that allows app developers to use the camera for high-FPS recording. iOS APIs allow full use of all high-speed camera functions, allowing developers like OnForm, etc, to utilize the cameras to the highest (1080p+ at 240fps). Android developers are stuck using an ancient API that still only allows 60FPS max unless they were to forgo APIs and hardcode a camera app from scratch, which is why nobody has done so.

Skillest and instagram.

The pro of Skillest is the structure is built in. The con of Skillest is the after lesson follow up communication is hard. Like if you want to send a video of you doing the drill to make sure you are performing you have to have a subscription plan.

The pro of Instagram is the flexibility of DMing videos and questions. The con is the structure, setting expectations and cost up front is important, but it's easy to get lost/forgotten about.

My coach is using Golf Live. I think it is fairly new and that being said it definitely has some interface and lesson scheduling work that needs done.

For me, the best feature is it records the entire lesson and I can go back and rewatch my previous lessons anytime.  I do not know if any other platforms do this.

I have only used Skillest for sending and receiving analyzed videos back. It worked well for that, but never did a live lesson through it.

THIS. it's amazing that in the last few years of golf instruction apps, no one has come up with a Zoom-like video meeting app where you can record footage and draw lines in situ.

This part is probably coach dependent.  The guy I've worked with has reopened the lesson before so I could upload a new video to make sure I was doing the drills correctly.

Echoing a number of people here - Skillest is my favorite, but I've used V1 in the past to mixed success.  Just make sure you find a good instructor - it can be overwhelming and success is def instructor dependent.
