Difference between Vokey SM9 60 degree T grind vs L grind

I am trying to upgrade wedges for a highly competitive junior player who has extraordinary abilities with his lob wedge around the greens.  I am trying to not disrupt what he is feeling too much while wanting to get him some fresh grooves for the new season and add a half-inch in length to the wedge.

 

He currently has an SM7 60 degree L grind.   I am considering the T grind given how popular it seems among better players.  Can anyone outline the differences in feel, playability, and performance?   Any feedback is appreciated!

IMO if you don't want to disrupt his flow, buy him what he's already using, or take him to evaluate different grinds.  I wouldn't buy blind for him.  And you should know the loft of his PW to align gaping.

 

The mistake countless people make, they buy wedge grinds based on popularity, not considering the needed practice to benefit from a different grind.  L Grind is for low bounce for firm conditions.  T Grind is more versatile, with the narrowest sole, and M grind is for people that like to create all sorts of shots, like me.  

 

I play all sorts of conditions, so chose Vokey back in 2016; started with SM6 F52/8 & M58/8, then when SM9 was introduced switched F52/12 and M58/8 and PW is 46', gaping is 6' and shafts are S200.  The reason I switched is Vokey moved the COG progressively up the face to help lower trajectory, which I prefer.

The biggest difference I noticed is the leading edge of the T grind sits lower to the ground when you open the face, which is why I chose it over the L grind.

This was my experience as well. The T grind has worked really well for me, especially given the dry conditions we had last summer and fall. When I coupled that with a higher bounce sand wedge (M grind for me), I can hit just about any shot I need to in any condition.

I had no interest in “upgrading” to any SM10 wedges until I saw the M grind will be offered in the 54.

The simple answer is (IMO) then L grind is just a lower bounce M grind while the T grind has a more narrow effective bounce area. 

 

I like my players (and myself) having 2 lob wedges.  one with low or med bounce and one with medium/full bounce.  (like t/L and m/d or m and d etc...). For a few reasons: 1) choosing a club depending on course conditions, 2) to spread out groove/face wear over the course of the season, and 3) practicing with lower bounce to help them develop their technique and fundamentals

I have a L,K,M for different conditions even though T has been very versatile.

Both grinds are considered low bounce wedges and require precise delivery, but the T Grind features a narrower forward sole (towards the leading edge) and more aggressive heel, toe, and trailing edge grind compared to the L Grind which allows the leading edge sits closer to the ground, especially on open-faced shots. The WW T Grind has a wider back flange (trailing edge) compared to the SM9 L Grind’s narrow back flange (trailing edge)."

OP @Swingthoughts.  Any feedback on how they compared?  My junior is in exact boat.  Loves L grind 60.04, especially from bunkers...no longer available, replaced with T grind.

Did a wedge fitting at TPI and was told the L grind was designed for Phil to play shots with a wide open face as well as the back of the stance shots with a square face lot of shaft lean.
