Why can't I get inside out on driver?

Recommended Posts

I recently built a simulator and have a launch monitor that gives me all the data I love.

For some reason, and this has been a problem forever, I can hit every club inside out except for the driver.  I don't know why...but this is the one club I can't get inside on.  If I do manage to get inside, I tend to hit blocks.

Looking for any possible tips to fix this swing path...thx!

What’s the aoa? And do you have a face on

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I suppose it could be a few things, starting with a mental block due to the driver being the longest club and the one you're told to "swing up" with. Maybe you've bottomed it out before the ball in the past, and now your brain has your body trying to avoid it. Who knows? Otherwise, if you can swing in-to-out with other clubs, then you should be able to do the same with driver.

...But you're probably swinging the hardest with the driver, and with a big "hit" impulse, and may be coming over the top with the club by starting your downswing by throwing your right shoulder out toward the ball. And/or you might have the ball positioned in a bad spot (too far forward or back), tee the ball too low, never really make a full turn behind the ball, spin your hips out early, slide ahead of the ball... What you're actually doing -- and why -- could be a variety of things.

As a lefty, that would be weird to watch...I kid, I know what you mean.

With no swing to look at, it is a very safe bet to assume he sets up with his shoulders open with the driver...more so than the other clubs. Other teachers that read this will say "yep, I've seen it a hundred times."

Because you are hitting up rather than down. Why do you need to be inside-out a driver? Many of the best players in the world aren't.

Yup, including in myself at times hah. I'd also add any degree of flattening in the shoulder rotation in the backswing as well as that combined with setting up too open in the shoulders is nearly a guaranteed "forced out to in" feeling without compensations. Mix in any amount of early extension/depth loss and you have the unholy trinity of moves that completely prevent a natural in to out path and get people adding in various compensations to force it e.g. drop the trail shoulder and swing to right (or left for a lefty) field which invites the big two way miss.

As stated though, video is needed for sure. See @Scottbox's thread in the video section in you want filming guidelines.

Closing my shoulders did help. Lowered my ball flight a bit too. Appreciate the feedback even without a video haha

I'm a 9HC that struggles with arms going deeper in backswing than shoulder turn.  When I work to limit that, sometimes I don't complete the hip turn.  If I remember to do a full hip turn in backswing, it keeps my path square or I-O with driver.

Could be similar to an issue I deal with constantly. The last 15-20 years of instructors and commentators saying to lead with the hips has caused a lot of players including myself to spin out their hips way early. The torso and shoulders either stay connected and follow (path to the left and pull hooks or slices) or get disconnected and stuck (pushes and duck hooks).

My advice would be to calm down your lower body and be more patient in transition.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
