Apex UW vs Hybrid

I currently play Cobra Utility in 3 iron with Ventus Black as my 250 yard club and while I find it works well off the tee I’m missing the mark into par 5s & long par 4s. Looking at something that doesn't go left and is more fade biased and launches higher (but not 7w/5w high) The UW intrigues me and typically never cared for hybrids so if someone has some advice on both it would be much appreciated.

loft for loft UW will fly lower with less spin and easier too work both ways.

I found the 21° UW that I had flew higher than similar lofted hybrids, and it also flew higher than my 23° hybrid. Distance was about the same as my 19° XTD super hybrid, but the turf interaction was much better with the XTD than the UW. Ball flight and carry distance with the XTD was more consistent for me because of that.

Whatever you try, see if you can find a grass range if possible to see how each club reacts to your swing.

17 degree UW is great off the tee and deck . I think the 19 might be the best because off the deck the 17 still flies lower than my preferred flight window into a par 5 .

I’ve had a few clubs in this spot over the last few years. Various 5 woods for a while, 7 woods, hybrids. Finally landed on a Paradym 19* hybrid. Absolutely loved it at times and hated it at other times. I did NOT like the first gen UW so the 2nd one wasn’t really on my radar. Ended up picking one up and I absolutely love it. It will be in the bag for a long time. Easy to work both ways and flight low when I need to. It is an absolute mission launcher as well. For me it’s nice to know I don’t need to step on it to get what I need. I couldn’t endorse the new UW more.

I know they changed the sole on the new UW model from prior model. Do you think that's why you found more success - overall better turf interaction? Does it sit any different than the old model? Open, closed etc?

I honestly can’t speak to the turf interaction. It’s been so long, I just don’t remember. For my eye, the new model sits very neutral/square, which I love. The previous model sat very open to my eye.

The 19* has been so good that at various times I’ve considered picking up a 17* and playing it at 16* for a 3 wood. But it’s just not necessary as I love my paradym TD 3 wood.

I prefer the look of the UW over hybrids so probably see I can find new apex uw model. Thanks for the feedback.

Fairway wood- highest launch/height with low spin

Hybrid- lower launch/height with more spin than fairway

UW - between the two, but neutral ball flight

i also like that UW can be ordered flat/upright/weak/strong and then a good club maker can bend even more if need be.

Spot on and I have the same experience with the new 19* UW. It will be in the bag for a good long while

Out of curiosity, what distance are you getting out of your 19* UW? I currently have a Nike Covert 3HY 20* that I use for 200-215 which basically replaces my 4i. Im looking at the UW 19* but didnt know if only 1 degree of loft difference would provide that much distance change compared to the 3HY 20*

I would love to go hit them in a simulator side by side but I cant find a used one around me anywhere.

I have similarly had a variety of woods and hybrids in the slot between a 3/4 wood and 4 hybrid. 5 wood, 7 wood, hybrids, etc.

I now own the previous Apex 19* UW that can be found very cheap these days, as well as the 18* Paradym Super Hybrid. Both are great options, but I think I prefer the Super Hybrid. The Super Hybrid is adjustable (bumped it up to 19*), easy to swap shafts, and is more forgiving than the Apex UW. Has great feel as well. Easy to hit off the deck, and money off the tee. YMMV.
