Better Players PLaying Srixon ZX5 Irons

It's time for my annual "forgiveness" experiment. Played blades for nearly 15 years, before switching to mostly player CBs in the past 4-5. Every year about this time, I end up on a GI iron journey. Most years I wind up in Ping G irons. Played PXG "P" irons last year. I loved the Srixon "7" irons, so I am thinking about "scratching my GI iron itch" with some ZX5s this year.

For reference, I am about to turn 50. Former professional baseball player. Wouldn't call myself a "high" swing speed player, but can still move the club (am fit into X-flex across the bag). Typically shoot in the mid-high 70s on a 7000 yard course with several rounds at and below par (though it has been a while). Wouldn't call myself a good player compared to most competitive "tournament" golfers, but am a very proficient weekend warrior!

I am currently playing Titleist 620 CBs. Probably should be playing something a little easier to hit long and straight. Am very hesitant to sacrifice feel and love an iron that works well in the turf (I loved the z785s and ZX7s). Any "better" weekend warriors playing ZX5s?

I currently have the ZX5s in 4-6 iron. At address they have a thicker top line, along with a slightly wider sole. Definitely makes longer approach shots into par 5s easier. Ball flight is higher so stopping power is great. Haven't hit the scoring clubs, but I'd think with time they would be good to go. They definitely are hot off the face, adjusted the lofts to match ZX7s in the rest of the set.

Zx5 are going to be miles more on forgiveness and spicy when caught out of the middle compared to the 620s. The difference will the turf interaction with the thicker sole. Sounds like your a good player so after a few rounds you will most likely adjust into them well.

I’m playing the zx5 mk 2 irons 5-pw, the lofts are strong so I ordered them two degrees weak with KBS tour 120 and for me they are great. The sole design is excellent and no issues with it being too wide. Distances are very consistent.

I love blades but these make up for my lack of rounds played due to real life getting in the way of my golf game.

I am moving to the black chrome ZX5 mkii irons from PXG gen6 P irons. I will say the PXG irons are, imo, very forgiving. That being said, I think they have a hot spot problem. Sometimes I will hit a shot 10 yards further than normal on what feels like the same shot. A few buddies of mine have the ZX5s and they rave about the distance consistency. I have hit their irons on a handful of occasions and really enjoyed them.

I have a set of Z785's and had a set of ZX5's. I was not a fan of the ZX5's at all and sold them quickly. They were very chunky and flew way too high. I ended up in the Rogue ST Pro, which I think accomplish what you're trying to do, minus the feel part. If the feel is the most important part, then I'd stick with the Z785's or ZX7's. If you do ZX5's, I'd stick with them in the 4 and 5, then combo to ZX7 6-P. I'm not as good as you are, and still found the Z785's reasonable to hit through the 6 iron.

Other irons to look at would be the T150/200 combo and Mizuno 241/245 combo.

I know a few mid to low single digit players bagging the ZX-5s. They're just a great iron with considerably more forgiveness than the 7. Even good players want long, high and straight a lot of the time.

Had the Gen5P and sent the, back for this exact reason

I had ZX5 4-5 then 6-W in ZX7. If this gives you any idea, I now have Blueprint S 6-W but kept the 4-5.

The long irons are fantastic, routinely high and straight, and while there is some heft to them, I’ve never battled pull hooks typical of hybrid-ish long irons.
