Hybrid questions?!?!?!

So I can attest that on the LM the 5H is the right club to attempt to replace 4i for me. Ball speeds, spin and distance were a match. Slightly lower launch with 4i. Of course, I was striping 4i and now am wondering what I even need the 5H for. I’ll take them outdoors this Friday to see how they do head to head.

The 4H is too long for the gapping and I just listed it on BST after receiving it yesterday.

Ha, my 4 iron knew I was thinking of replacing it this weekend. Hit it better and more consistent than I have in a year!

I play 5i and 6i replacements with my 6h and 7h. My irons start at 7i.

Why did I go that far, because more often than not, when I needed my 6i to perform, I'd fat it. I subconsciously swung differently with it after fatting it so often.

A smooth 29* 7h gaps perfectly for my usual aggressive 29.5* 6i. Gives me a lot of room on distance as well: if I swing faster, it goes another club for me (5i distance). Same for my 6h, which is a 5i replacement swung smooth, or a 4i replacement swung fast. I'm able to stop both on the green nearly 100% of the time, unlike the irons they replaced, because of the higher trajectory.

(I had a 27* 6i before with the same set up, gapping still worked out well.)

7w beyond that for me.

Hybrids vary greatly from brand to brand and person to person. Most high swing speed players will have to play lower lofts in hybrids than the equivalent iron due to hybrids tending to apex higher and have higher spin. With how far hybrids have come in recent years though it really does differ from head to head. For example an Apex UW will play very very different to a stealth 2+ for example.

Mid to higher handicap players may need more loft on hybrids to hit the same numbers due to how much more forgiving hybrids are, so if you're used to mishitting 50% of your shots and lose 15 yards with an iron, you may only lose 7 yards with a hybrid, effectively leading to a longer average distance.

So basically, do some research on the forums, youtube, google, to see what models may produce the shot shapes and launch you are looking for, then either go to the store or get fit and just try everything you can. Unlike iron or wedge fittings, being indoors off of turf shouldn't effect the shots much so no worries there.

To follow up. Took the 4i and 5H out on real grass yesterday. The 4i was much better with dispersion. The 5H was all over the place, ball flight too high and worst part was felt like I was hitting rocks. Went back in the truck and played the full round with 4i.

Short lived experiment.

I've gone loft for loft with good success.  My 23* hybrid has always played shorter with a shaft that is similar weight and profile as my irons, and it's giving me consistent distance and gapping.  For a long time, I played a 19* 3 hybrid with a shorter 105ish gram shaft, and the gapping was similar to what I would expect with my irons and 4 hybrid.  The 3 hybrid spot is now being taken by a 21* new model Apex UW.  The lighter and longer fairway wood shaft gives me the same gapping as I'm used to with the higher launch of the higher lofted head.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I can see how that could be an issue. I was curious to see if going the 5h route might help a bit with gapping and consistency in distance. My 4 iron does not go quite far enough and is a bit inconsistent in distance, the T100 I have goes too far.

Hope you can stick with the 4i.

Played a few more rounds since with 4i and it’s not going anywhere. However, I do think that the 22 hybrid is a better fit for the gap now than the 19. Distance is the same but much better dispersion with the stiffer and shorter shaft.

so what started as an experiment to replace 4i may end up replacing 3H. On and on we go

It’s difficult to get the balance right, probably depends on what your next club is and the gaps you want.

I play my 19 degree hybrid at 20 degrees and was wondering if I could lower the loft and fit in a 4h maybe at 22 or 23 degrees. I want a 30 yard gap between 5i and 3h cover by 3 clubs. There is always something to tinker with.
