Why do my wrists stop closing at impact?

Recommended Posts

Hi all - it looks weird to me in my swing that my wrists stop closing when I make contact with the ball. I think I've mostly gotten away from hyperextending my trail knee in the backswing too. The issue seems to go away when I just swing with my Speedsticks, which makes me think maybe it's my body subconsciously trying to correct the path of the ball? But really I have no idea. Appreciate any insights. Thanks

You're severely float loading/late wrist setting to the point that you're creating far more lag than you can reliably release in sequence, so your wrists are simply going as fast as they possibly can given the circumstances (which should change).

iodjWrist1.gif.f18610a501fb5e29f19b2d5c08e2ed94.gif

Here you have functionally little to no wrist set at all, which is red flag #1. To well exceed 90* of shoulder turn while the shaft is well short of parallel is a huge mismatch.

iodjWrist2.gif.e5c6dd9395584ad2b6fa03ef53b16b52.gif

Then right at the last second in transition you narrow and hinge *severely*. All this wrist angle you introduce here should have been there ages ago because introducing it all at once in transition throws you way out of sequence. The fact you can "do" this with the Speedstick is simply because it's light enough. Once you introduce the weight of a club you can't swing it fast enough to compensate for how much late lag you're creating. Also you address the Speedstick as though the ball off your left heel like you would a driver, but then try to make the same swing with an iron with the ball in the middle of your stance.

Basically you're using the Speedstick wrong and its encouraging a fatal flaw in your delivery that a full weight club isn't compatible with. You can late set and float load a light training aid and swing it like a driver, but you can't hit irons this way because the float will be more severe when full head weight is added. Get your wrist angles set much earlier in the backswing and feel like they're already loading by the time you reach the top.

Thanks Valtiel. The float loading is very clear in those GIFs. I used to struggle with casting so tried to get the feel of lag with float loading, but I probably need to find an overall average of the two and set the hinge much earlier. Whether that will correct the wrists after impact - I have no idea, but there is a lot about the golf swing which is a mystery to me so wouldn't surprise me if it did! Will give it a try and report back. Cheers

This is such a common problem. Golfers need to understand casting is not solved by adding lag artificially.  Especially by float loading.  It’s also throwing off your sequencing.  The hips are firing while the wrists are still setting.  You pelvis and knees are in an impact position when your club is at shaft parallel.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Thanks again @Valtiel @MonteScheinblum

Have been trying to get the hinge in my swing earlier rather than set it all with a float load and I think it feels more controlled (although I am hooking most of my shots) - do you think I'm on the right path?

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

So happy I found this thread as struggle with the same excessive wrist hinge very late at the top of the swing and then struggle to square the face (especially with a PW) and with driver and fairway woods don't present enough loft at impact.

I was working on reducing the wrist hinge at the end of the backswing by trying to not let the wrists hit the swingyde at the top of the backswing. However maybe I should be getting the wrist on the swingyde earlier and then just turn my shoulders.
