Help me find some distance with a new ball

Honman

Recommended Posts

I got these numbers with Pro v1 in a fit. The fitter suggested TP5 would be longer as it spun a touch more and launched higher while being faster. I'm open to any ball suggestion to add some yardage to my game. What Callaway ball might be worth trying for example

The Today's Golfer test wasn't all that great anyway since they tested indoors... launch conditions should be pretty good, but nothing about the downrange flight is going to be particularly reliable.  Your best bet might be to use PING's ballnamic to see what they recommend for a high flying, high spinning ball based on your launch conditions.  They have a bunch of the 2024 balls now in their database.

There isn't a ton of consistency across manufacturers, but generally to increase spin you'll probably want to look at the "X" version of a lot of golf balls.  As for higher flight, I don't recall too many manufacturers discussing trajectory, but Titleist sells the V1X as the highest flying and spinning ball in their premium lineup, so that might be a place to start.

I've read a few articles saying ProV1x can be good for slower swing speeds and senior golfers.  My normal ball is DASH -ProV1x, but I've been playing ProV1x more often.  AVX for ugly weather.

I'm in the UK, the site is geo locked. Maybe I can try with a VPN.

When I did a Titleist ball fitting a few months ago the guy said that he mostly fits people into the X because they can use the help of the spin and height.

I have played the majority of my golf since 2013 with Pro V1x. I do feel that the extra spin and height are helpful. I need as much help as possible holding greens with approach shots from anywhere outside of 130-140 yards.

I hit my driver about 180 carry/200 total (with low flight) and from 150 yards I hit either a 6-iron in summer (with low flight) or a 23deg hybrid in winter (with medium height at best). I play off a mid-teens handicap.

There are various balls out there which work just about as well as Pro V1x for my game but none have ever proven better. Others that have been satisfactory include Pro V1, Tour B X, Chrome Soft X LS (those are ones I've played exclusively for at least a couple months at some point). Close but not quite as satisfactory for one reason or another  (usually lower flight and/or less green holding ability) have been Q-Star Tour, AVX and Chrome Soft.

I have never found a 2pc ball that performs as well as a good 3/4/5pc urethane ball. Some of them fly very high but lack spin and distance. Some of them have decent distance but lack both spin and height.

I maintain, notwithstanding price, ProV1x is a fine ball for many seniors.  My 87 yr old FIL played it until he retired from golf.

Try the new AVX, more spin around green but likely more distance. With Callaway the closest would be Chrome Soft?

  1.

Driver = Callaway Rogue ST Max w Kai’li White 60S

3HL = Callaway Paradigm X w Tensei AV Blue 75S

3UI = Srixon ZX Mkii w Recoil DART 90
5-PW = XXIO X 12 w N.S. Pro 950GH Neo DST

Wedges = Cobra Snakebite 48 | 52 | 58

Putter = Wilson Staff Model 8802

Ball = 2024 AVX

While the '24 AVX is designed to have more greenside spin than the '22 version, it is still a lower spin, lower trajectory ball, which is completely the opposite of what the OP's fitter told them to look for in a new ball.

If you need spin which it seems you do look into more X models. ProV1X and Chrome Tour X are probably 2 good ones to look at, the TP5 line is definitely fast, the TP5X doesn't spin as much as the regular TP5 so maybe best to test a few sleeves of each.

A sleeper pick is definitely going to be thr Wilson Staff Model X. The Bridgestone balls this year seem a bit slower but the Tour BX is probably the best option for you but the spin of the Tour B XS could be a better fit for you.

Lots of options there, gotta test and see what works now.

Played a round with TP5 yesterday. It felt good and it stopped well. It definitely didn't feel overly spinny which was my fear. Was reasonable in the wind.

Need to do some monitor testing to really compare now, but from first impressions I could definitely play this ball this season.
