DG AMT White- Actual Playing Experience

Judge Smails

Recommended Posts

I grabbed a back up set of my favorite P760 irons with the intention of reshafting.  They have AMT Whites in them and the reviews are all over the map.    Am I over thinking it feeling I will absolutely hate them?  Are the folks with bad reviews more vocal, or are these not it?

I am wondering if people can offer more actually playing experience and if they are still playing them?

I currently have DG 120 and prefer a traditional s300 or s400.  I don't mind the 120 through the set, but are a little loose in the short irons.  Maybe this means I won't hate the AMT Whites at all?

Will I hate the AMT White, or might they play more or less like Dynamic Gold?

I played them in a set of 2019 T100 and I couldn't get used to the long irons. They were so much lighter than I was used to, and couldn't get the timing right.

If the clubs you bought come with them - just play them for a bit and see if you like them. Don't write them off immediately, it may take a little longer to adjust to ascending weight shafts as they are not the norm.

Nobody can possibly know if you will like/dislike a shaft.

Thanks for the above.

I guess I am just seeking opinions on how drastic of a change I will feel from regular DG.  For example, the DG 120 has a fairly different feel and higher ball flight but I got used to it in one range session.  Wondering if folks could chime in on their experience of how drastic the change is.... I know it's a matter of opinion but I value that feedback and relative experience form the golfwrx herd...

There seems to be a far amount of negative experience with the long irons.  Any positive takes?

I played regular DG for 20+ years, before moving to AMT, and I really like them.
In my mid to late 50's, I noticed I started getting tired towards the end of my rounds. Now, at 60, with AMT, I have no trouble playing 36/day.
I get the DG accuracy in the wedges and short irons, and the lighter weight to help get the long irons up in the air.
Now, I don't consider myself to be all that sensitive to shafts, so your experience may vary, but they work great for me.

When I first switched, I could definitely notice the lighter weight in the long irons, but I didn't think it was a drastic change.

Thanks for your thoughts.  Just want I am looking for! Personally, I am coming off a big injury so while I am in my early 40s, I have "slowed down" too!

My experience with the AMT White has been limited to a few random used Wedgeworks Vokeys.  Is it totally in my head that the AMT White is slightly different from my usual tour issue s400 wedge shaft?  I almost felt like they played a little more stout with a flatter trajectory?  No big deal, but the feel really did seem a little different?  Maybe all in my head... you know how that goes

As for the long irons, if they are a little easier to get along with and higher launching, similar to the DG120, I will be thrilled.  If they are a wet noodle I will be bummed.

But yes, they are a back up set so NBD either way.  I guess I am just hoping I might be able to game them as is!

I would be shocked if most people can tell.  The short irons are about the same as s300, x100, etc.  The long irons are indeed lighter, but do many actually play these anymore?  I am talking like 3 and 4 iron.  5 is still close enough in weight not to matter too much.

If you still play 3 and 4 iron a lot and like s300/x100, then keep them.

The AMT still put a heavy strike on the ball (which I love) and are low spin/launch.

All in all, if you put the AMT stickers on DG shafts, I would bet that nearly nobody would know outside of really good strikers of the ball who still want to hit high shots, punches, etc. with their long irons.

Well I am a happy man if the difference is within a range that it's not night and day noticeable.

I do still play a 4 iron and actually really like the club. Sometimes I sub in a t100s 4 iron and it's one if my favorite tee clubs... the fact that has a s400 tour issue in it and I hit it quite well is that's what got me scared about the AMT White long irons in the first place!

AMT White S300 9i/W shaft should be the same shaft as an S400 wedge shaft. Just 2 grams lighter.

I guess what I am hoping is that the AMT Whites play more like DG300 than the DG 120.  It's clear the shortest irons will, so that's a start....

I’ve played them in a couple of sets and they’re not terrible. I will echo what everyone else has said about the weight. The short irons will feel heavy or the long irons will feel light depending on your weight preference. I’m probably wrong but I think there’s a 25 or 30 gram spread in the shaft set. Personally, I wish they were more like a 15 to 20 gram spread, more gradual and more subtle. I think that would have been a better use of ascending mass.

I found them quite harsh in the wedge and short irons, but wonderful in long irons.

I find the AMT’s much closer in feel and performance to Standard Dynamic Gold than the 120’s. To me, of the entire Dynamic Gold family, the DG120 is the outlier. Feels harsh and launches lowest of any DG to me.

I love the AMT. (55yrs old) I play them in a set of 716 AP2.  The iron set is built so the swing weight is the same.

I play a set of Wilson Staff FGv4s with the predecessor to AMT( DG Pro ). They are R300 and after a series of lead tape tuning over 2+ years...mimicing shaft weight, head weight or both...I'm used to this weighting spread and swing weight spread(D1 to D3). The lighter long irons are better.

as of 6/22:

5i 415g 28.81  38.13

6i 422g 28.5  37.63

7i 429g 28.38  37.13

8i 436g 28.19  36.63

9i 443g 27.94. 36.13

PW 450g 27.69.  35.63

GW 457g 27.75.  35.5

I reccomend trying ascending mass setup, but you do have to give it a chance.
