Why does the caddy toss the ball to the player when hitting driver on the range?

so the player doesnt have to reach down and get the ball himself

 

+ the caddie doesnt have to move nearer the swinging club

But they still have to bend down to tee it up.

Teeing the ball is personal. There's no way a caddie could tee the ball up to what you're feeling on that driver at that moment.

 

Also you don't have to bend down, then reach for a ball, then tee. Just bend down and tee up.

 

I bet there are stories of tour pros that have bent down and reached for a ball and strained/sprained a neck muscle. Bending down at the waist like the pros do and reaching doesn't seem like a good motion for your body.

It's a holdover from the days of wooden drivers. The caddie would always clean the balls to be used with the driver to get sand and grit off of the ball so as not to scratch the inserts or bugger the brass screws that held them in. It amazes me how people with no concept come up with explainations and pass them off as fact?

I would assume it is to keep the balls from getting dirty on the ground.

Its to stop the player getting his hands wet,as the ball will have been washed they are ushaly still wet so the player gets the caddie to dry them to avoid the player getting his hands wet then gripping the club maikin the grips wet and dirty

That is probably why I have scratch marks on the face of my driver. Got to clean the ball first.... DUH. that makes sense

Cause it's easier than walking over and handing each ball over to the player.

it's simply to clean and dry the ball...so the player doesn't have to do it himself.

Don't forget the all important cool factor that it adds. Very necessary when you are warming up in front of hundreds. :)

True, but these guys not are hitting balls in a mindless rapid fire manner. Most go through some sort of pre-shot routine even while practicing. Teeing the ball up is part of that routine. It is not about luxury. It is about keeping a routine and making it close to an on course shot. On the course the caddy is not going to tee the ball up for them.

It is really about getting the grit and dirt off the ball. Sand on the ball will chew up the face of a driver faster than you can spit. It also does keep the players hands clean and dry. If you've ever teed up a wet ball, you know what I'm talking about.

I thought the caddy did it just to warm the ball in his hands to optmize the physics of the launch trajectory and progressive ball flight to allow maximum distance?

The balls are new on Monday, but they show wear through the week from wedge shots and the ball picker and washer.

 

Caddies select the best balls, clean them, and dry them before they toss them to the player. Caddies often dry the rest of the balls before they pile them for the player so the balls don't pick up as much sand and dirt as the player drags them over.
