DiMarco's and Riley's I5s

Are the I5s that Chris DiMarco and Chris "I'm too tired to play" Riley the same irons you can get retail or do they have a Blade/Tour version of the club? I know that they both played the I3+ Blade last year, and my experience with the I5 is that it has too much offset and is a shovel compared to that iron.

While I don't know that answer to this, I really can't see them going from the minimal offset blades to the rediculously offset and ugly (JMHO) i5's. But then again, Corey Pavin went to the out-of-this-world looking VAS's at one time so I guess anything is possible. Simp

Was watching the coverage of the Abu Dhabi championship, and am pretty sure Dimarco was using Ping I3's and not the newr I5's.

I'm a big Ping fan, but for Ping to call these Player Irons is an insult. I had the I5s for about one month and did not see them as a good replacement to my I3+ Blades. I felt I was going from a Players Iron to an ultra game improvement iron.

pretty sure dimarco only had the I5's for a few practice rounds late last year and went back to the I3+ blades. it does seem silly that ping would not include a smaller profile, less offset version ala the I3+ and I3+ blade. even if you look at the golf digest hot list they include the I5's under game improvement and not under the player's iron section.

Your right, I read in Golf Digest that DiMarco was tinkering with the I5s, but was still playing the I3+ Blades. Anyone know if Ping is considering making an I5 Tour/Blade?

While the I5's do have more offset than I3+ blades, they are less offset than many of Ping's previous models such as isi's. I believe that he has been playing Ping for many years and had played several of their previous models. Playing the i5's may still be a possibility for him.

anyhoo... the pros pings come from wrx tour dept. same as for us... but a dedicated groups just for the staffers.

So if the i5's are mammoths, then what are G5's??? The tour players play i3 blades mostly. I don't know a single person who plays i5's, and to be frank, the i5's are about the same specs as the Eye 2's.

I'm not sure which pros play with less offset/no offset i5s but they do exist. The only way to really get a set of less offset/no offset i5s right now is to order them with weaker lofts and depending on your swing, have some of the bounce grinded down. Otherwise these irons are very difficult to find as Ping is very strict about who gets what - I had to pull some teeth to get my set. There are rumors that a less offset i5 will be released but nothing definite as they are selling very well right now.

I can't believe that all of the Ping staffers don't use S-59 Tours. This is the most solid club Ping has ever made IMHO.

At last look, DiMarco still had the i3+ in the bag and Riley was playing the i5. Calc has the i5, and Sutherland has the i3+ non blade. McCarron has the i3+ Blade.

 

I am a 3 handicap and play the i3+ non blade. Progression was Eye2 for 15 years and then i3. I cannot hit the s59 or i5. The lack of offset makes me roll my hands and then hosel city. I also play no offset clubs too forward in my stance. Offset makes me put the ball in the right spot. To each their own.

The i3+ irons were designed with less bounce than the i3.Also I talked to Calc at the PGA last year and he said he love's his i5's.

the i3+'s were made with a bigger tuning port. the black/white weighted piece in the cavity...
