i noticed the hand ground wedges on the first page...do you still use those?

i've actually done my tour S rustique wedges by hand too using knife sharpeners and ultra rough sandpaper. It takes weeks but i've gotten some pretty good results.

Yeah. Bizarrely, I made this comment about this time last year about the old wedge. Now that the face is worn a bit, it imparts less spin and makes for easier shot control into softer more receptive greens at this time of year than in summer.
Nice job on the wedge, you should be happy to see the SM4, that are based on the 200 head shape and feature some tour grinds that are essentially the same as yours. The "S" and "T" grinds could work.

You are right, those 690 MB have a wonderful shape. They frame the ball so well. I had a set of the original no dots, and will be heavily tempted by the 712s.

Very nice and im a little jealous. Been eyeing up and toying with the idea of SM4's for while now. Particulaly striking in black Sir.

Are you coming from non-conforming wedges ? Much idea in the differential in Spin ? Or is it a case of new conforming grooves = better performance than old part worn non-conforming ones.....

"I opted for the 60.04 Mcilroy version for extra spin" What do you mean? Extra spin? Williamo is confused.. black%20eye.gif

Yeah - I should've mentioned I normally rotate between the spin-milled 58 degree and my custom grind 59. The 60 degree generates the extra spin needed just by virtue of loft alone, but the new grooves help somewhat too. "Extra spin" is compared to what I normally use - not really what is ultimately capable for other players. Personally, I think the grind helps the overall spin by allowing a clean nip off the turf in my "slider" style. YMMV of course.

Okay, cool. Well explained too. I am thinking of getting new wedges and I have the SM4 on my list but I am having a hard time deciding since they spin less.. I have the non c-c Spin Milled wedges and really like them. They do suck back about 1 yard if I hit it well on a nice and hard green. We have two courses at my Golf Club and one of them has SOFT greens. On the one with soft greens it makes the ball even spin back around 4-5 yards... it's absolutely sick!

What shaft do you have? What is stock?

What do you think about 4 degrees of bounce? I am playing 12 right now and it's a mess! Very hard to hit flopshots but it works great out of the bunker and on every other shot....except when it comes to the floppers.

What do you think about the spin? From fairway, bunker and rough? Noticeable?

I agree with your statement. I played the X for 2-3 years just because I liked the lower spin with the driver. Then I decided the driver doesn't make me any money. So back to the reg and it's such a perfect ball. I've spent enough educated time testing balls, and the b330 was the only ball that has even been close.

Still gaming the 905 series?

Hiya - hope you don't mind me adding some pics of my Old Titliest Tour Model irons before I part with them at the end of the week.

Hopefully they will add to the Tiliest interest from a design evolution point of view, I always felt that I had the blades just before they became excellent with the 6 series - such as yours.

Had I 670/680 or 690 I'd probably be keeping them!

Cheers

This truly is a class thread, very aspirational. Love the clean look on all titleist gear and it sound like you have the game to warrant such an intimidating bag. I know I would sheeet myself if I saw your bag pull up on the first tee!

Great traditional set up, yet still so relevant today. I've always fancied a set of 670s or 680s, but have never pulled the trigger. I've been on the hybrid carousel for years now but still come back to the 2-iron.

Excellent thread and over the years have played all the same stuff.I foolishly sold my 690.MB's and would agree with you that they are one of the finest blades ever made, they just look right at address and perform superbly.Interesting that you also played 990's,I had 990's and when going through a bad spell some 981's and Titleist got it absolutely bang on with the treatment of that 431 stainless because they were without doubt the best feeling cast clubs made.
Love your driver choice too,I've been looking for a 905T but as a lefty the choice of lofts/shafts isn't always ideal,I currently switch between a 983k and 3 905R's which are all 10.5 but have different flex shafts so I pick according to weather and how I'm swinging.
Many years ago I did a similar thing with an old Titleist Tour Model sand wedge only I ground virtually the entire flange off to make a short range lob type wedge.Titleist had just produced a 60 degree wedge but it had an awful lot of bounce,my wedge almost laid flat on the ground and did work perfectly on the course that I played at that time which had mostly elevated or ramped greens.
I tried Vokey wedges but always found them a bit 'dead' compared to the old Cleveland gun metal low bounce jobbies, all that said you have a great bag, what I call a 'proper golf bag' and also entirely agree with what you say about seaside courses and bounce,I see no end of players with wide soled GI irons thinning a number of shots because the club has bounced off the turf early and they can't work out why!
Full marks for a great read.
I'm a 157 yard 7-iron kind of guy these days. Nothing like the touring pros on this site, lol. Traditional lofts with yardage spacing of 12 yards gives me a pretty good spread. Obviously I get a bit more carry and roll with the 3-wood and driver. The official trackman data of my last driver session was 253 carry and 281 total I think. Not bad for an old timer, but driving has been a bit of a struggle lately. Hence the constant switcharoo with the drivers. Ho hum.

Classy bag & blades Jaskanski.

Have you tried any of the modern blades at all.

Modern? Cheek! lol.
yes, I've tried quite a few lately. The 710MB's were pretty good, if a little prone to wear IMO. Ping S56's seem to be pretty good. The Mizuno range seem to be pretty good at the moment too. I was rather taken aback with the performance of the MP-59 lately - an absolute cracking iron. But then again, would any of them be significantly better than the current set up? the answer seems to be NO at the moment, although opinions always vary. Maybe I'm just set in my ways - (old man emoticon missing). My pro certainly keeps pushing temptation my way - "have a go with these boy - I think they may be a good choice for the spring..."
The Mp59's do look nice. I'd be surprised given the rest of your bag if they do not battle against the 712 MB's.
Then again I think you'll struggle to knock out the old faithfulls.

Roll on the spring.....
