I've played Vokeys, CG12's, X-Forged's and TM Z-cutters..

I've just ordered the 56 and 60 in the black nickel finish with the "T-Grind" and KB Tour wedge shafts from the WRX dept.. cant WAIT!

IMO.. my problem with the deep groved wedges is that they spin way too much for me.. I have no problem spinning the ball and they were gashing up my premium balls! So, needless to say.. I've been playing my 588's from 10 yrs ago and been loving them.. until i hit a freinds Tour-W.. very very forgiving club!

combination of Tour W and Vokey in my bag, with Vokey's new bounce and grind options I think there'll always be 1 SM in the bag!

did you check the custom grinds you can get from Ping WRX?

I gamed Spin Milled Vokeys for awhile with no problems and for no other reason than just to try something else I ended up with 52 and 56 Tour-W and haven't looked back for a second. The tour-w feels great, easy to play from a variety of lies, can control the distance and trajectory just fine. The spin control (for me) is just right, with my swing, these just hop and stop, not really spinning back at all. this is just what I'm looking for. Before the SM's I gamed clevelands and again, the tour-w's win out in each of the above categories. I have mucho confidence with my tour-w, and confidence is a grand thing on the course! good luck with yours!

I know that Ping has different grinds but I do not understand the reason for all of the grinds on wedges. Most wedges are sold off the shelf with a standard grind. Why would an amateur need something that special?

The reason for the grinds is the performance of the wedge. I went to 4-uw bent 1*strong (G10s) and being I came from 30+ years of players cbs & blades I basically use my UW for only full shots and a few bump and run chips. I only have one true wedge and it has to be versitale so the T grind alows me to to open up the wedge more to produce much more loft without screwing up the leading edge while still being able to hit the full variety of shots you want from a 56*.

There's a long thread/Scratch golf sales advertisement if you do a search that is very recent.. Basically off the shelf wedges dont fit everyone's needs and swing's, just like different types of putters, and different driver/shaft combinations..

The special grinds are for people (like myself) who need a wedge that can accomodate more than one type of swing and shot type.. basically.. makes it a little more versatile than off the shelf.. but it totally depends on you and what shots you hit around the green etc.. and what you want your wedges to do..

for me grinds do help, but it's also psychological.. and gives me the confidence at setup and also from performance.. that it can do what i want it to do..

Alot of clubtests seems to think that the Vokeys are better "dart throwers" and the Tour-W's are more forgiving. With my personal experience I also found that to be the case. Both great wedges but I think they suit different styles of players.

that pretty much sums it up for me as well, when im really on my game i like to use the vokeys

I'd probably agree with that.. The Tour-W is much more forgiving.. around the green as well. Either wedge you cant go wrong with, that said.. after hitting my Tour W's.. I'll never go back to vokeys any time soon.. I also feel that the cavity on the TW gives it a much softer feel than any cast wedge i've hit.. and maybe i'm wrong but it also feels softer to me than my x-forged's did.

I have benched my Vokeys and have brought the Tour Ws into the rotation. I am very happy with them (so much so that I will update my signature soon). I have the 47, 52, and 58 and I really like them. I have become so confident with them that I am contemplating trying the S57s to see if they are as easy to play and control as the Tour Ws.

Now i've had 5 rounds with my 52 and 60* Tour W, I'd be happy to have my 56* in a Tour W as well. The Tour W is just as capable as the Vokey for me and I play heads without additional grind(s).

I play the I5's also with Rifle 6.5 and in my 56* tour-w I play DG SL 300. I thought about putting the Rifle 6.5 in the tour-w but the DG works well for me so I did not change the shaft. :smilie_ping:

I've been playing this year with the Vokey SM 54-14 (bent to 53) and SM 58-12 which I have been very happy with. I also rotate in my Mizuno MP-T 53 and 58 wedges, with slightly less bounce (I think they're both 10's). Overall, I'd say the Vokey's are my favorite of those 2 because the heads are slightly more compact, which I prefer.

I recently bought a set of PING S57's and decided to spring for the Tour-W wedges (54-10 and 58-10) and bent the 54 to 53. Of the three, the Tour-W's are now my favorite. They have a feel that is at least equal, if not better, than my Mizunos. Actually, I'm quite amazed by that - that a cast club can feel that solid and soft. They put plently of spin on the ball without going overboard. Only on full shots do they abrade the cover of my ProV1X's, and still not too badly. They are noticebly more forgiving, because shots towards the toe end up being almost as good as purely stuck shots. I ordered them with DG S-300 shafts to match the S57's. So overall, I'd have to give the nod to the Tour-W's, although I'm sure my Vokey's will find their way back into my bag on occasion. These are all really great wedges.
