How do you walk 18?

As a high school golfer we are required to carry and I feel I play better when walking. I can think through mistakes or analise what I did correctly on the last swing. It is great exercise too.

I hate when people think walkers play slower. Will a single walker take longer than a single riding? Of course but on a normal weekend day a group of walkers will have absolutely no problems keeping pace.

Amen. It's sad that a high school golfer know's this, but a LOT of "adults" don't.

I am a carrier. I hate riding in a cart. It throws my rhythm off and I just don't play as well. I wan't to get a little Sunday bag for my quick rounds or when I mess around though. Sometimes I like going out with like a fairway wood, putter, one wedge, and , like 3 irons just so that I can hit all kinds of different shots and get creative. Doing this means you don't even need the lightweight bag that I carry.

I both ride and carry, but I always shoot lower when walking. You think about your shots more while walking up to the ball, you see the entirety of the course, feel the slop of the fairway, and realize that you can't just drive around all day beating balls. Not only that, but I just generally enjoy a good walk. ;)

I prefer walking, whether it's pushing a cart or carrying. But riding has its perks too, I recently played a rather long course and we rode, I had a ton of energy left in my legs late in the round so my swing was solid throughout the 18 holes, shot a score that I was a little surprised. For me, when I have tired legs, I start to sway, lose consistency and power.

I couldn't agree more with cubicle. I've had to debate so many of my friends concerning whether or not golf is a sport. Having people my age, and able bodied people in general for that matter, using pull carts certainly does not help the arguement. My father is in his 70s and he's carried my bag 36 holes in tournaments on hilly courses many times without every whinning for a pull cart. Maybe I look at this whole thing differently because I grew up double bagging doing two loops on a long hilly course, and also played tournament golf, where you surely would be laughed off the course for pulling a cart. I draw the line though at able bodied. If you can't haul your own bag because of a bum hip or bad back that's one thing, but it aggravates me to see a young person pull a bag because they are lazy (or need to focus their energy on making swings with non-load bearing shoulders). Unless you plan on making over 100 swings in any given round, that shouldn't be taking a toll on you. Not to call out too many people but honestly it just looks quite effeminate - like you're dragging a big purse down the fairway...or more likely the rough. All I know is if I asked my college golf coach if I could have used a pull cart for a 36 hole tournament he would have laughed, kicked me off the team, and recommended that I be expelled from the University.

Anyone who can apline trek, snow-camp, and back country ski in deep powder and difficult terrain all day should be able to carry a golf bag 18 holes. Barack Obama should also pass a law that anyone in the armed forces should carry their own bag (or take a cart if they want to relax on their time off). I mean just imaine if the enemy saw one of our soldiers pull a cart.
I'll bite on two parts of your post.

1. How do YOU know who has back issues? I completed an ironman triathlon last year in a decent time (sub 13 hours) and look fit. I also broke my back in 1994.

2. While I was not a soldier, I was a Marine. Why the hell would I carry a bag instead of using a push cart? You are either a badass mofo or you are not. NOTHING you do on a golf course is going to change that.

(FWIW, our enemies are too busy dying or trying not to die to GAS what we do on the golf course)

I was a carrier until this year, my feet were always aching after the round. Got myself a clic-gear 3.0 and my feet/back are thanking me. Also I don't have to worry about an extra wind shirt or umbrella weighing me down.

I walk 18 5 days a week on average, a little less during January and February. I am obviously retired playing as much as I do and I do it primarily for the exercise but a side benefit is saving money for more golf stuff. I use a Sun Mountain V1 Speed Cart. I wore my first one out and just purchased a new one. Also my walking is tough on golf shoes so on my annual Myrtle Beach trips I typically pick up a couple pair at the golf shoe outlet in North Myrtle.

I'm 16 now I walk 99 percent of the time and I honestly can't remember the last time I haven't carried my bag except when I take a caddy.

For years I carried but just this year I bought a push cart and I'm loving it. I recently moved and all the courses around here are very hilly compared to the flat lands of Florida.

I also started playing more often (3-4 times a week).

I was reluctant to get a pull cart because, let's face it, carrying the bag is just sexier! However, once I started using it I found I had a lot more energy come the back nine.

The biggest benefit I've found is that on courses that don't have a lot of coolers (water) or a cart girl I can carry extra bottles and not have to worry about the weight. It's also fun to push the cart down a hill and see how close you can get it to stopping by your ball!

I just joined a private course and most everyone there walks and I've been walking as well since it doesn't cost extra. I'm just carrying my bag right now but I'm thinking of getting a push cart. I've always preferred walking to riding and like the exercise but since I've been carrying my bag lately I feel like the later the round gets, it's affecting my golf swing. My feet don't hurt and I'm not tired by the end of the round, in fact a lot of times I go home and then go to the gym after I play, but if it's going to save me strokes I'll opt for the push cart. Plus it gets really humid here in the summer. I've already carried my bag here on a day where it was 95 with high humidity and I'm pretty confident in thinking that my swing by the end of the round wasn't the same as it was early in the round. I'll probably opt to carry the bag on days where it's not so hot outside. I don't think it has anything to do with how "tough" you are. I'd just prefer to play as well as I can and stay as comfortable and keep my swing as fresh as I can.

Yeah I converted about 2 years ago and it was a good decision.

Think about the added stress and the associated cumulative trauma on your joints when you carry that extra weight while walking 2.5-5 miles. It's got to take it's toll over the years.

Carried 36 for the first time a few weeks ago. I got a strong idea of what to eat / not to eat during a round! Fun time though!
