I typically carry now after a time where I pushed using a SM speedcart. The carry preference is due to the ability to walk across the greens without having to worry about it. Its faster and more convenient. That said, I am very concious of what I have in my bag so that it doesn't get too heavy and cause unnecessary exhaustion/soreness as mentioned by others. Unless it is raining, I carry no extra clothing/jackets or too many balls. I try to keep it to roughly 6 useable golf balls and toss any excess out. Hydration is always a key when you walk and carry. Drink lots of fluids, make sure to mix in water if the fluids are of an adult nature.

A few of the more hot+humid days here lately have left me feeling a little flat after a round of pushing my Speedcart (tm). Over 4th-of-July weekend I showed up on the Sunday hoping to get out early and beat the worst of the heat. They told me I could play right now or wait for the normal 9:30 game. So I didn't take time to get the push cart out of storage but just shouldered my bag.

OK, so now I know what's it like to feel flat after a round...like week-old Coca-Cola...that spilled and dried on the floor. At first it felt great not to be encumbered by the three-wheeler but once that sun got overhead and the steam started really baking out of the grass, those last three holes were a lot less fun than the first three had been.

So the next day I was back to the trolley, at least until the weather cools down some. Best to live to fight another day and all that.

At home, with a push cart. I play so much better walking it's ridiculous. Walk, hit. Walk, hit. It's a nice tempo, and it beats the ride, totally forget about your shot and lose focus, wait, hit routine of riding. If I travel, I just carry the bag. I can very easily carry a bag all the time if I wanted, but I'm trying to think about the long term consequences of carrying.

quit tennis, it'll ruin your golf game  on a serious note, i gave up tennis after playing competitively in college.

if i'm walking, i'm carrying my bag.

I was pretty against carts and always carried my bag until this weekend. The only reason I changed my mind was because there's a doctor that golfs with my friends and I sometimes and he bought himself a new push cart and gave me his 6 month old Sun Mountain Micro Cart for free. :yahoo:

I prefer to walk and carry...helps to save money too that I can use for more golf!

But...here in Central Texas we've had a record breaking summer with some insanely high temps. So lately, we've been the first group out of the box and ride. I am so looking forward to a little cool down so I can get back to walking. I tend to play better when I walk as it let's me blow off steam and re-group after a poor shot.

Currently prepping/planning to start walking again. I have a bag boy cart pull cart that I'll be using. I played in high school & carried all the time, playing every day at least 9 holes a day. I could walk 18 in 3 hours if the course wasn't busy. I definitely miss those days, & there is something about carrying that makes it more genuine. But, I have to watch out for my back & bum ankle, as I want to be playing well into my senior years, so pull cart it is.

If it's your back that is the issue, you're much better off with a 3 wheeled PUSH cart, than a two wheeled PULL cart.

This year I've exclusively carried - I switch between a reasonably heavy Mizuno Twister bag which might be loaded with wet gear and food etc and a Scratch Sac which I generally take out on an evening with a half set.

I do this mainly for health reasons - I'm a bit overweight so the extra exercise does me good, when you play 18 4-5 times a week in the Summer it really does make a difference.

I do like the idea of a big huge cart bag on a 3 wheel push cart and have all sorts of gear in there. I promised myself I wouldn't go to an electric push cart (very popular in the UK) until I was past 50 (another 10 years yet)

Hardly anyone uses a buggy at my place. I don't think they even have them to hire - one or two guys bring their own.

I use the Rule of 85. If the temperature is expected to exceed 85 degrees I ride. If it's under 85 I push. I live in NJ and in the summer when it's over 85 degrees the humidity is usually also high. I had quadruple bypass last year. It's not healthy for me to walk in high heat, high humidity.

IMO, if you're physically able... you should walk and carry wherever possible. I'm not really a fan of push/pull carts, but at least you're walking. Sadly, many of the courses I play make, or VERY strongly encourage, that you ride. Sucks, as I enjoy the walk and tend to score better.

I carry my new MacKenzie Sunday Walker whenever I don't need much stuff (like a rain suit), or an Ogio Grom when I do.

Me at Bandon Dunes a couple weeks ago (:yahoo:)...

I definitely prefer to walk... I will usually carry, but will ride occasionally.

I play better when I walk, I think.
