Boss Taking Me To His Country Club

What should I expect?
I've never had the chance to play at a country club and I'm not sure what to expect. He recently joined a new country club and has some free passes that he wants to use and invited me to go this week.

I have no idea what to expect? Do I tip people? Do I have to pay for drinks (bottle of water? soda @ the turn?) How much cash should I bring? If you have any insight or experince with this PLEASE let me know.

He and his daughter are pretty good, and I'm...well...not...but I at least want to know how to act and what to expect since I think that will leave a better impression.

Regards,
Tyler

First of all you should expect to lose!!! You can't beat your boss the first time out. IMO, Usually at country clubs the food and snack and drinks are put on a members account. He will probably yell out a member number and they bill him at the end of the month. Some clubs require you to spend so much per month, if he doesn't they will charge him it anyways. Your the guest though, play it by ear. If he pays for the food and the golf is free obviously for you, take him out to dinner some time. You can talk about how he likes the course after he's been there a while and you can say you had an awesome time, hint towards doing it again. Hopefully he will talk a little about work, ask for your opinions on a few things. Make sure you do your homework before golf and before the potential dinner if it happens. And if his daughter is hot, why not talk about her? Just kidding don't do the last one! haha,

hope that helps a bit.

Since it's a private clubs drinks at the turn & or lunch is usually paid via the club members number. Bring cash just in case if that isn't the case. Since he's picking up the tab for golf & possibly drinks & or lunch, buy him a dozen balls (his brand) and give it to him as a thank you a day or so after.

You are his guest and will reflect on him. Leave your cell phone in the car, and remember to remove your hat indoors. Ask him if the club has a dress code, collars on shirts for example. Try and relax, have a good time, and enjoy the course. When I have a guest out to my club, I don't expect the guest to pay for anything.

Some of the obvious points; dress code (no jeans, collared shirt, etc..). Odds are your money is no good (per earlier responses, but bring it just in case!). Be sure and tip the person who cleans your clubs after the round. Repair ball marks, fill divot marks with sand (if available). No yelling, club throwing etc...

Lastly, be sure and enjoy the round!! :ok:

Don't tip anyone except the valet (your car, your $$.)

Wear nice, plain clothes.

Maintain your composure when you miss a shot.

Take care of the course if there are no caddies.

Thank him for the round.

Order something less expensive from the menu (i.e. chicken) unless he pushes a particular item.

Don't drink alcohol unless the boss does, and then just one.

Thank him for the meal.

All the while you're maintaining good eye contact, upright posture, and making random positive comments about the club's amenities. Less talking is always better than too much. No picking: nose, butt, pockets, etc.

These are but a few of the hidden guidelines you must follow to survive a country club visit. If you violate the rules, they will kill you and bury you under the course---that's why they're always so green.

Yep..I plan on losing (Isn't that a great mental state-of-mind  )

And his daughter...Maybe if I was 16! I'm just a couple of years older than her...plus I'm married.

Thanks for all the insight! You guys have made me laugh!

You all have brought up some very insightful points that I will remember.

If anyone has anything else, please feel free to let me know.

Regards,

Tyler

I agree that you shouldn't expect to pay for anything, but have plenty of cash on you just in case you have the chance. You should definitely think about a thank you afterwards (next day). Like said before, notice what brand of ball he is playing and send him a dozen with a note. Another option is that if he is a scotch drinker or cigar smoker, buy him a bottle/box of his brand and send that with a note.

Enjoy your day and have fun!

Fix your ball marks, rake the bunker if applicable, put sand in your divots in the FW, echo the dress code thingy. Bring cash to reimburse the guy you are playing with in case he asks.

(Many of the CC down here are on a ticket basis and not a cash basis.)

Keep your composure (limit the yelling, if you are into that after a shot).

Do these things I've mentioned and you can fit right in at my club

Shout "Sit!" or "Go" after every shot, they will think you are brilliant.

And when your boss tees off be sure to yell "Get in the hole!!!" even if it's on a par 4/5 and don't forget "You da man!!"

Sounds funny, but spring for a new golf glove. It is a little thing, but you don't want to be standing there looking very sharp and then pull out a crusty glove. The bright white will really make an impression.

Glad you mentioned this...I have a new glove somewhere, probably need a new one just in case.

BTW...nice blog...glad I'm not the only one who gets frustrated

Good suggestions by most so far. When I was invited to a club, I paid the tip for our caddie and I gave my friend a dozen ProV1's since that is what he plays. That went over well and I was invited back two more times. Follow all of the suggestions and you'll be fine.

Be sure to report back how it went once you've played......

I will...today is the day...as long as the rain holds out. It's overcast here, but I don't think it's supposed to rain.

Don't expect much about my game, but I think the course and the experience will be worth talking about. I'm taking tommorrow off..and drinking Guiness  all day...so it may be Saturday before I can post again.

Tyler

I was a guest at Lake Nona(home of Faldo,Els,Nobilo,Garcia, etc.)First,we had to play with the pro or a member. The member was not there so we played with a pro named Jay Jameison, son of former touring pro Jim Jameison. All practice balls were free, beautiful practice are,I might add.We played from the back tees.It was mint, baby! What a golf course.I shot 34 on the front and the pro beat me like a redheaded step child, shot an easy 32.The back was more difficult and I added a 42 for a 76.He shot 38 for a 70.We lost money to him but he wouldn't accept it.I didn't have to pay for anything, but I remember vividly going into the grill room afterwards for lunch.I still had my hat on and they came right up to me and informed me I had to remove it.I'm used to public courses where anything goes, but ,boy,I could get used to the good life very easily. The whole day was a dream. If I were you,I would just bring cash and offer to buy a drink or lunch, but I'll bet you won't have to lay out a dime.Enjoy.

I love these ideas. Most importantly enjoy the experience and make sure you don't diminish your bosses experience. In other words, stay upbeat and fun even if you are playing poorly and pay attention to your boss and how well he is playing. Real compliments don't go unnoticed. Play the game but don't forget to play the game as well.

There was actually an article/blurb on this in Golf magazine a bit ago--most of the stuff has been addressed above (including the dozen of his brand of balls). Another one that I really liked is ask him how much you owe him at the end of the day--especially if he puts it on his membership (which is most likely). Odds are nothing, but it puts the question to him and avoids all assumptions. Good luck on your round though and let him know that you enjoy it. If you have a bad time . . . lie.

If he is a "new member" your actions will be watched closely by others as a reflection on your boss, don't act like a dork. Offer to pay a certain amount after the round (most likely he won't accept but shows proper upbringing to offer) Try to beat him. Don't omit the daughter in the conversation, include her in any stories/tales you might tell. Act like you've been there before, that you belong.
