Titleist ProV1 costing me 5-6 strokes per round.

Seriously costing me 5-6 strokes by not being able to put it into position off the tee. From mid irons-wedges and putter the 09' ProV1 might just be the best all around ball but off the driver it over does it with my draw. I can draw it, or fade it but can not hit a frozen rope like I could with the old B330-S. When I really go after it, it goes 15 yards right of center and draws back 30 yards. Im going to put the new B330-S back into play few a few rounds and see if I can settle in with it. If I remember, didnt the 330-S spin more with the driver then the previous S. I was Golf Galaxy the other night and they had 30 dozen of the old B330-S instock :o and might go and stock up.

You're not going to be able to play a Bridgestone ball with a WITB like yours...

I know,,,thats the cross I have to bear...

but seriously. I put the Prov1x into play and the straight ball comes back and the iron game goes away. My five lowest USGA recordings were with the old B330-S and all was well last year. Yes my swing is to blame but given the ball flight laws...my natural flight is straight at first then draw or straight then fade. I cant find the dreaded staright ball. You almost have to always shape your shot with this ball off the driver,,,iron shots are dead nuts straight. 80 has been my glass ceiling this year and cant break it. Cutting 3-4 strokes from 80 is so huge of a task for me right now.

Your WITB shows that you are playing a set of 755s and are carrying Vokey wedges.....

....if you can't control and spin a V1x with those clubs, somethings not exactly right.

You talk about ball flight laws... No ball will curve 15 more yards than another. The driver spin difference isn't a statistically significant enough difference that side spin would increase more than a couple of yards. Its all one you and those ball flight laws or lack of understanding of them. Sounds like your clubface is consistently square to the target but your path is all over the place. .

Not so much about controling the spin, as it is a loss of distance and the feel is a deal breaker for me.

Tighter ball dispersion off the driver is my ultimate goal...The old B330-S was the ticket but are almost impossible to find anymore..and might as well let it go now and find another ball for my needs and not progress with a ball that you cant buy anymore.

LOL. Maybe that's it... "I'm going to completely chunk this 30 yard pitch on a tight lie"

Check out Golf mags ball testing. For 95% of us your can cover it all with a nickel. Unless you look at the effect the cover of a pro line ball has on spin.

Vertical rotational spin is more dominate with the more loft and control you have with shorter shafts and higher numbered clubs. Less distance to develop the effect, as well. Notice how there are no effective grooves on a driver? Try hitting a 7 iron with no grooves and see how it goes left or right.

I always find a 3 oz glob of vaseline on the front of the cart and applied liberially makes a driver straight like a 30 yd wedge. At least as far as horizontal spin goes.

Hey we wouldn't be here if we weren't obsessive about the whole game somewhere....

Honestly I played 3 different balls on Sunday and I cant tell the Difference between any of them.

Its not the balls fault.

Odd you say 5-6? how do you come up with that number?

I just counted the times off the tee box that I was swearing at my ball from the tee box. :clapping: My range of scores last year where from 74 being the lowest and 85 being the worst. Just good enough to work the ball but could use some more forgiveness. When I'm playing good I can work the ball fine, but when I bring my C game is where its costing me strokes. Nothing worse then ripping a ball down the middle and and watch it move left, hit the fairway and bounce into the deep rough or go into the woods. The terrain is so hilly here in PA that you get punished for not being in the fairways.

I have discovered that any ball can be the best ball I have ever played if I am hitting it well.

The only balls that I can categorically exclude are really hard two piece balls, and super soft balls like the DT solo or Srixon AD 333.

Outside of that it's preference.

Titleist balls have always excelled at greenside spin, and although they have minimized the effects of driver side spin as much as possible, you can't outrun physics 100%, even with layers and mantles, etc..

If a ball spins more around the green, it will spin a little off the tee. A good bet for you would be a ball like the Callaway Tour i, you get medium spin everywhere, and good solid check on iron shots and partial wedge shots.

To me, the new pro v spins less off the tee than the prior iteration but somehow still spins well into the green.

I know you probably won't believe this but I just started using the NXT-Tour and am having great results with it. I think it is great off the Tee and it spins pleanty on the green. Pick up a sleeve and try them before you jump ship....

Jorge

The only 2 eagles I ever recorded where using a NXT-Tour. Cant remember last time I tried them. A little less spin would not hurt me at all. I take divots even with my 4 iron. I do remember getting alot of fliers off the wedges though.

I would give the Callaway tour i a shot. You'll benefit from somewhat reduced driver spin without compromising approach and short game control. Additionally, the ball is more durable and holds up to the wind considerably better than the ProV1. I'm a recent convert myself, and won't go back to Titleist.

I bought the 2ball pack from Golf Galaxy that has 2 of each ball and found myself playing better with the ProV1  It did make me realize how much less the proV spins off the wedges compared to the B330 lineup. 1/2 wedges would hop and stop even on the crappy greens at my local course. I might tinker around with the RX ball again. but all my good shots that I remembered where all using the ProV1.

I think many of us are playing too much ballfor our games. I was for sure. Last week I switched from premium balls from various OEMs to a more "normal" selection of Top Flites, Cally 2-piece balls, Bridgestones, etc. The difference was night and day. The 2 and in some cases a 3 piece Gamer or E5+, E6+, TreoSoft, stayed in play due to low spin and when I would block shots, the ball tended to mitigate the wayward flight and actually made the shot not so penal. Heck, the best drive I had all day was with a Wilson ZIP! It was just a big test fest! But, I can believe the ball would have something to do with it as well as a swing issue. Sometimes a more basic ball is what many people need.

So judging from your low of 74 to 85, what does that put your handicap at.. I am guessing around a 9?? And you say you are losing 5-6 per round due to the ball? Cmon Bro, thats pretty far fetched. No 9 or 10 handicap I have ever heard of was such a precise ball striker that he would lose 5-6 strokes based on driver spin, and therefore not being able to shape a shot.

Whats so hard to beleave that I could could lose 2.5 strokes per nine with a ball that doesnt match my driver/3w that well. If you ever played any western Pa courses you would understand how important keeping the ball in the fairway and being able to hold the green with approach shots is a utmost importance. Most of the slope ratings are in the mid to high 130's which puts my adjusted USGA at a 6 from a 9.6. I'm good enough to know where my weakness is and where I'm losing strokes at. But I'm not good enough to consistanty shape the shot I'm trying to hit and usually over due it. Most of the fairways here are severly sloped and you have to curve the ball back into the slope just to keep the ball in play.
