cleaning wedges

best method
all right...
I have a cleveland bronze/aluminum (i think) 56* wedge and the grooves aren't in top notch condition....
it's causing some bad shots that are fine with my rather new mizuno...
the stuff (grass, sand) has almost cemented itself into the grooves so I was wondering if there was any good way of getting this stuff out....I know another option is to buy another wedge but I would rather safe this wedge than purchase another (like most people, I'm sure)

Also, how long do most people keep there wedges in terms of round?

"the stuff (grass, sand) has almost cemented itself into the grooves"

Try soaking it in a bucket of hot water. When the water gets cold, that should be long enough and you can use a dental pick to scape the crud out. I just cleaned my bro-in-laws whole set like this the other week.

WHAT? :vava: Don't you ever clean those suckers? The cleanliness and sharpness of your grooves are critical to producing spin on your wedges. AT least clean the gunk out of there with the end of a tee while you're walking to the next green.

If they're REALLY caked in there - soak 'em in water with dishwashing soap. Then - take one of those brass brushed, and give the grooves a good scrubbing. Be careful - as those brass brushes can scratch the other surfaces of your club.

As far as how LONG I Keep my wedges - as long as it takes until the grooves wear out, which for me is about once every 2 years or so.

Here's another suggestion on cleaning. I normally soak a towel in water before I go out on the course and use that after ever shot. This keeps them rather clean. Then when I get home, I will drop my irons in warm soapy water and use a firm brissel tooth bruch on it. It cleans the groves without affecting the paint in the groves. Makes them look good as new.

Thanks,

Probably not the "best" method for all wedges, but I have a byron nelson 56 wedge (sounds similar to what you've got) and playing around austin, tx, left its grooves filled with dirt that i thought I would never get out. A friend of mine (now on PGA tour and sponsored by cleveland) swore that the best thing was to get a 3 cans of "Squirt" and put the clubs in a bucket and let the carbonation go to work--and it did.

I've had my byron nelson quite a long time, but I'm planning to get a new one asap. When people tell you how long they keep wedges, you should take note of what kind of wedge. It doesn't take me very long to knock the grooves out of a soft/chromed wedge, but this byron nelson has been used for probably 6 ot 7 seasons.

Thanks for reminding me! I haven't cleaned my clubs in a month or more and they have fertilizer all over them now hehe.

I just put my irons in some hot water and dish water detergent (it was there) and let them sit for a while. Then, I use a club cleaning tool to really get into the grooves. I only use the plastic brush side so I don't scratch them and after sitting a while it's easy to get the dirt out.

After every round, take a bucket of warm water with dishwashing soap and soak the clubs for a few minutes. Then use a hard bristled brush (you can buy the ones specifically sold in most retail golf shops, or even use what I use - a hard toothbrush) and scrub the faces and the soles and dry.

If you take care of them, they play better, look better, and (if you are one of many club ho's out there) will be worth a little more at trade in time.

I can't imagine what sort of gunk can't be shifted with washing-up liquid and a toothbrush/cocktail stick..

If it's not too badly worn (ie the body of the grooves are still intact, and forming an indentation in the face) re-groove it. Cheaper than a new wedge, and a lot easier than replacing an old faithful, which may have been ground/ported/made to the specs you like...

I use a medium firm toothbrush to clean the grooves after every round. I'm careful to to scratch any finish or chrome.

Funny story, i use to work with this guy who was a real good teaching pro. He was a pretty good player as well. This was back in the late 80s. He used to have a beautiful set of Hogan PC apexs, which always looked great. HE used to go out to the range and beat balls for hours and come back inside and rinse all the irons under scolding hot water and brush the grooves out with an industrial strenth wire brush. Obviouslyu no dirt was going to stay in those grooves. Now that I think of it, i have no idea how the chrome stayed on these beautiful clubs. That brush was nasty.
