Taylor Made "HFS" steel fairway metal

Recommended Posts

Comparison Pics w/ the Titanium
Well here are 2 of the best. The "HFS" known as Hot Face Steel is changing on tour. The new ones will look closer to the retail ones, and will be out on tour in the next couple of weeks. So we will not see many of these around.

I took some shots of the HFS and the Titanium tour issued 15* 3 woods. The HFS looks like the older 200 steel updated. Art "Speeder617" says the HFS gets up in the air faster than the titanium. I can say the head is much smaller than the titanium and the same size as the older 200 steel. Great heads. I will report back after I try the HFS.

These are great fairway woods. I've tested everything under the sun, Tour Edge Exotics, Vsteel tours, R7 tours, BBD Type H, 200 tours, 970's, J33's, and the list goes on. I can honestly say these are the most pleasant to my eye at address. And the face is very HOT. Good enough to bump out my vsteel tour w/ shaqx that's been a staple in my bag for quite some time!!

I have 2 HFS 13*'s that are fighting for the #1 spot in my bag. One shafted with REAX 85X and the other with VP 80X TP.

Awesome Pics Thanks!!! i may have to put on hold getting some HFS steel fw's and have a look at the updated version!!!

Hot, Happy, You choose. ;)

Actually, the choice was made by Taylor Made and they chose Hot Face Steel. Joe is correct.

Post modified to reflect the Happy to Hot. Hot it is what this head is if you like the smooth 200 steels of the past.

I just finished hitting both at the range and there is a noticable trajectory difference. The HFS is much higher than the Titanium for me. Much higher. I also didnt dee a lot of distance loss.

The looks of the HFS are the same as the smooth top 200 steel. I could have been hitting either of them and not noticed the difference in proformance, sound or shape. The only difference from the HFS and the 200 tour smooth top is the paint color IMHO.

The difference between the HFS and the R7 titanium is the HFS is smaller and flies higher. I would have to assume the smaller head will require you to put a good swing on it though to compensate for the face size.

I still had more confidence hitting the smaller head that went higher. The leading edge of the HFS looks like it will promote getting under the ball better. Hard to explain but the bottom of the sole on the face seems to project out a bit more than the titanium edge.

Great heads. I would play both all day. HFS for a higher ball for sure.

That's good info, thx Richard.

I think I'll keep my Smoothies. ;)

I had the chance to really give these HFS woods a good test run yesterday. I don't see why people are hitting them too high, very strange to me. Maybe it's the shaft you're using?? Anyways, the one with Vista Pro 80 has made my bag. To give you an idea on distance, I would hit my Vsteel 13* w/ shaqx 255 yards maxed out. Yesterday, I hit one 270 with the 13* HFS VP80. Probably the longest fairway wood I've ever hit. I didn't have any problems with trajectory being too high like I did with the smoothies. I found putting very heavy weights in the head was extremely helpful for me as well.

  • 3 weeks later...

I now have about 10 rounds under my belt with the HFS 13* with vista pro 80x. I need to retract my comment about not hitting it high. It does seem to fly higher than average, but still carries a long way. I'm hitting it 15 yards further on average, and is still the most pleasant 3 wood to view at address. Kinda on the small side, but I like that, notice the irons in my bag!!

The HFS head feels more solid and has a short, muted, high-pitch sort of sound when hit. The non-HFS feels more "spring-y" if I had to chose a word and has a bit more of a thwack sound. I think the HFS has a more penetrating flight but that's just me. I have a 7 wood R7 TP HFS. The HFS heads are smaller and more rounded so you can work the ball easier, it gets through the rough better, and it is better off different kinds of lie angles. The non-HFS head has a flatter sole and wider so it is more forgiving. I think the non-HFS is better for tee shots and the HFS is better for off the deck, but that might just be me.

I've hit the r7 hfs and own the r7 ale. The hfs is better out of the rough because of the more rounded sole, however, I chose the ale because it's awesome off the tee. I haven't had a chance to hit the tour issue titanium. Let us know your findings after you've hit it. Thanks.
