If only 1 course to play in Dallas/Fort Worth?

Best course that fits tight time frame
I flying in to DFW in a couple of weeks. I'd like to squeeze in 1 round maybe 2 if possible.

I'm arriving in the afternoon about 3:00PM So I'm thinking what is the best course I can get to by 4:00 PM to play 1 round. Might try to squeeze another one in early morning before my meetings.

Prefer Public, but might be able to make connections to get into a private.

It seems like the Tribute at the Colony is leading the list right now.

I need your top two courses within an 1/2 hour of the airport, or 1/2 hour of downtown Ft. Worth.

There is no question that The Tribute is an outstanding venue. I played it about ten years ago and had a wonderful time and have recommended it to anyone that says they a place to play in the DFW area.

Here's what Golf.com had to say about it

It is out of the way, however. Check your schedule and your maps. It is a drive to get there but, you will love it.

Cowboys Golf Club - near to the airport and a nice layout. A bit $$ though.

Sky Creek Ranch (http://www.skycreekranch.com/) in Keller, West of DFW Airport toward Forth Worth, is a fantastic Robert Trent Jones Jr course, usually in great shape and challenging

Castle Hills (http://www.castlehillsgolfclub.com/) is the "wrong" way from DFW if you're going to end up in Ft Worth, but I think its a great course as well ... watch out #1 and #2 are two of the more difficult holes ... not the "welcoming handshake" that Donald Ross spoke of smile.gif

Cowboys is an experience, good topography, neat concept, neat visuals, I don't think its worth the price to play a second time though, greens are suprisingly slow for a $200 course. Twilight might be worth it, though.

If money is an issue for you, Grapevine (http://www.grapevine...ttheCourse.aspx) is right next door to Cowboys, about 1/4 the price and I thought was the best value in the metroplex 3 years ago when I lived there.

The Tribute and the new "Old American Golf Club" - on the same property as the Tribute - are "must plays" by all indications, though I'll confess I've never played either.

The Old Course at the Tribute or the TPC Las Colinas (where the Byron nelson is being platd his week) would be my first choices. The new course at the Tribute (the American) is private and I don't think you can get a tee time there. TPC is expensive but lots of fun.

The next best course near the airport is Texas Star. It's a very interesting layout and a great bargain. I highly recommend it.

Castle Hills is okay but has lots of hosuing.

Bear Creek is right next to the airport and has two courses. It is inexpensive and not bad.

Cowboys is a very good course (especially if you are a Cowboys fan. It is pretty expensive though.

Here are photos of TPC, Texas Star and Castle Hills from when I played them a couple weeks ago.

wouldn't do The Tribute, the super went to the new course out there and the course is not what it use to be. Played it several times this spring and it's got some issues. I would always prefer Sky Creek Ranch, Castle Hills, and maybe my favorite Indian Creek, Creeks Course, City course that is as good a trak as there is in DFW.

If you happen to go to Bear Creek, do not play the East course. The greens are in HORRIBLE shape.

I played the West about a month ago, and the greens were pretty poor also. Actually the entire course was in pretty bad shape.

Honestly, I haven't found a course in DFW that has greens in decent shape right now. Played Coyote Ridge yesterday and the greens were a complete joke.

Pretty sure you can play the new course at the tribute, although it sure isn't cheap.

Sky Creek Ranch as mentioned, is probably your best bet. Iron Horse in North Richland Hills is another possibility. Great courses.

Texas Star is by far one of the best public courses I have played, ever!!!!!! I live in Oklahoma, and have played all of the Oaktree CC courses and Oaktree Mens club, and I am going to say that Texas Star is every bit as good as those courses, in a overall rating. I believe if you are visiting the Dalls/ FW area and Don't play Texas Star, then that is a shame..... Just for the record, I believe Texas Star is better then Cowboys

I'm heading into Grapevine from 7/29-8/1 and wanting to play with some Dallas guys while i'm there! Anybody down to play either Texas Star or Sky Ranch on 7/31? I'll be staying at Great Wolf Lodge for the 3rd straight year. Got to play Dallas National last summer.

PM me if anybody interested in joining me and which course you want to play.

No votes for Tour 18? Haven't played it yet, but I'm interested as to why no one has mentioned it.
It's just not that great of a course. In my opinion, the holes they copy are great because they truly fit the land and that's not really the case with Tour 18, they have to force most of the holes.

It's way down the list for me.

Get some current locals to tell you what the Tour 18 conditions are like. In its history its had some really bad conditioning and really great. If you've never played Tour 18 and the local folks say its good, then give it try. Its a fun thing to play once. I would liken it to Epcot center for golf ... if you've played any of the "real holes" these replicas will probably look stupid, but if you haven't, its fun treat treat to look at holes you never have and probably never will ge to play (Amen Corner and Pine Valley).

On the other hand, I'd say the Tribute is the way to go for "play it once, replica" courses. I've never played, but always hear great things about it.

Sky Creek Ranch was one my favorite "Country Club for a Day" type course; great conditions, challenging enough, few houses seen from the course (compared to other Dallas courses).
