if for whatever reason I don't hit a provisional I drop in the general area and add 2 strokes
[/quote]

I'll do the same at My Club.

If I am on a Guys Trip at a resort....we'll go back and hit again.

Makes no sense. I think "The Boys" bring out a different side in me.

I play in tournaments in a golf league and we play by USGA Rules so in one of those, hopefully I hit a provisional ball to begin with. If not, I have to go back and rehit. If it just a casual knock it around with the guys thing, if I did not hit a provisional, then I will just drop it and play on. If you get in the habit of hitting a provisional ball for one that could possibly be hit were it cannot be found then it just becomes second nature to hit the provisional even in those casual rounds.

+1, always hit a provisional whenever you can. If you put a bad swing on the ball you get a free practice swing in the middle of your round with the provisional.

I hit a provisional if I think it is borderline OB. I know some of my buddies that just play it like a hazard and take a drop and one stroke penalty where they think it went out. I play the drop and two stroke penalty if I didn't know there was OB and didn't hit a provisional.

I agree with a member above about hitting a provisional, you'll play by the rules and even if you're safe it is like a free practice shot.

I like this.

Unfortunately, I play a golf course that has a ton of trees and thick rough. I guess if I don't see the ball finish, I just hit a provisional.

Simple. I like that.

If I'm playing a tournament or against some really stingy rules guy, then I retee. Other than that, drop and go. Golf takes long enough. No need to take longer.

Tournament play, by the book.

Casual golf, play a provisional. But if it really fools you, like a ball that took a weird bounce or got stuck in a tree, and you didn't play a provisional then take a drop nearby and add 2. Too much of a waste of time to go back to the tee.

+1, always play a provisional...it takes two seconds. If you don't then add 2 and atleast the score will likely be closer to what it should be.

What do you guys do if you can't find your ball because a group ahead of/next to swipes it? It's been unreal lately. That's been a bigger problem for me than anything lately. I have literally watched a group grab my ball twice in my last three rounds. It's conveniently when you're too far away to do anything and you never see them again...

This doesn't really need an answer, it just touched a fresh nerve.

Serious answer: I usually hit a provisional...and subtract two to build my self esteem (kidding).

Even if you're playing strictly by the rules, if you actually see someone grab your ball and leave, you are permitted to drop a new ball from where the original was taken with no penalty. (If you can somehow determine the exact spot from which your ball was taken, you get to place instead.) If you don't literally see it happen, different story.

Yeah, I know. I'm more venting my frustration toward these guys. How pathetic are you that you steal someone's ball in plain view? You're playing a course that costs quite a bit of money, you can afford it, go buy yourself a sleeve of balls if you're that desperate. You know what, I'll give you the ball, just let me finish the hole first, sheesh...

I'm with dropping the ball where I believe it went, but most of my dropped balls do not occur OB, but in trees or other unmarked areas, like very tall rough. I play alone most of the time, so I have no help with finding the ball, and what I often do, if it is fair to believe the location of the ball that I am assuming, is drop a ball without penalty into an unfavorable position.

I find it unfair that the pros get to hit it anywhere and have it found...why should I miss one into a tree patch and have to
1) Spend 10 minutes to eventually find it
2) Make a double Bogey?

Anyway, I'm certain I will get hell, but at least I'm honest with you guys.

I think it has a to be a "fair" situation....I don't just hit a bad one and throw the ball in the fairway with no penalty!

I'm with you 100%. (I'd rather pass over 100 new Pro V 1s which were actually abandoned out there than risk picking up someone's ball that he was still searching for.)

A permanent shank-curse on anyone who does this and causes a guy to suffer a stroke and distance penalty.

I agree. USGA rules actually dictate you have 5 mins to find a ball. I'm not sure about anybody else where, but if I spent 5 minutes on the course searching for a lost ball I'd start to have balls hit over my head. And as the above poster states, the pros have an army of people spotting/searching for balls, but not as lowly golfers.

As such, for my misses that I believe are "findable" - e.g., not OB and not in hazard but I just can't find the darn thing...I play it like an unplayable lie. Drop the ball as close to where I think it "should" be (even if it is still in the rough) and take a 1 stroke penalty. Of-course, this wouldn't be in a tournament (which I have no business being in). This would tend to assume that I WOULD find my ball 50% of the time (averages no stroke penalty of finding it and 2 stroke penalty from re-teeing).

Seems a pretty reasonable way to go to me to keep up the pace of play.

I normally hit a provisional if I think it will be hard to find. Sometimes I can't find it even when it SHOULD be obvious. Then I just drop, take my stokes and go on with life. I did go back a few weeks ago - the guys behind were annoyed, but it simply didn't matter. When we finished the hole we still had to wait at the next tee box.

Roger that. They hit into the rough and a crowd of volunteers run up to stick little flags into the ground. I miss a fairway and can't find the ball unless I step on it because the rough is full of clover that completely covers a ball. You can't see one if you're standing over it.
