Who uses a spoon (13 degree wood)

I play a 13* Cobra SZ head with an Accra SE80 shaft in it and I think it is one of my most consistent and versatile clubs in my bag both from the tee box , the fairway , and even around the green in deep rough.

I had to chime in on this old post. I'm bagging a Ping G10 17* 4 Wood AND a 14* strong 3 wood both with TFC129 stiffs. The strong 3 is my pet club now. I'm beginning to think its out driving my driver (I play all my drivers in X flex). I'm killing it from the fairway. I'm killing it from the first cut. I'm killing it from the rough (yes I know what your thinking but I just lay into it and it powers through). I have a couple Accra FW95 shafts (read SC95s) in Stiff and X-stiff that I intended to use but I don't want to mess with a good thing. I'm leaving the TFC129S shafts in them for now. Love the 4 wood but [i][b]LOVE[/b][/i] the strong 3.

Previously had a 13* FT Tour 3 wood w/ a Diamana 83x Whiteboard. Boy was this long but hit low. Switched to a 14* Ping Rapture w/ VS Proto x and this thing GOES. I outdrive virtually everyone I play with using the Rapture 14*. Quite deflating for them.

I have a Adams xtd pro fp400f with a 13 degree loft. It is extremely easy to hit. I guess its a cross breed between a wood and a hybrid since it is a hybrid-fairway wood. Maybe the shorter shaft makes it easier to hit off the deck? Regardless, it is my favorite club in my bag,. I have no idea if its a spoon or not.

I have played a 13* for a long time. The only real downside for me is that you can't really hit a green with it on the fly and get it to stop.

I tried a 15* recently and the distance loss was very noticable. I am going to try a 15* TE CB2 and hopefully that will give me the distance of a 13 with a little more elevation off the deck.

Sonartech had a 14* 3 wood about 3 or 4 years ago.

Having revived this post y'day, I have to admit I don't know what the "spoon" thing is all about. Someone care to explain? I gather it means anything that was once called a 2 wood, but ditto, why "spoon"?

It's simply a play on the fact that older, hickory-shafted woods from the late 19th/early 20th century often bore somewhat of a resemblance to a long-necked spoon; hence the monicker which became associated particularly with the modern 3 wood.

A [i]2 wood[/i] is often called a [i]brassie[/i], because older sets often featured a strong-lofted first fairway wood with a[i] brass[/i] soleplate (most drivers of the time had[i] aluminium[/i] sole plates) in order to lower the centre of gravity somewhat and make the club more playable from the turf.

Many people of my generation (I'm not so old as to remember the originals) are familiar with the spoon and brassie monickers as Taylor Made used to put those names on the soles of a couple of corresponding models of their hugely successful metal woods from the 1980s.

Play a 13* cobra x-speed. Has a large face which i like to hit off the tee on the tighter holes. I never try to hit it off the deck. Tried at the range and hit it low but screaming. It is a great club off the tee though because it looks like a mini driver.

Still using the original Callaway Steelhead 3+... have upgraded the shaft to a Penley Stealth

I think I'm gonna reshaft it and put it in the bag next year. It's pretty similar to the Titleist PT, although a little less workable and more forgiving. I like the feel a lot better too.
