What is the most forgiving

forged irons
I've been playing Cally X12s for a number of years and recently hit a playing partners forged Titleist irons. I love the feel of the forged but I also really like and need the game improvement of the Callys. What I am wondering is if there exists a set of forged irons that have anywhere near the game improvement qualities of theCally irons. I'm also quite used to the offset of the Callys and would like to stick with a club with offset. Does such an iron exist?

ummm, Cally X Tours?

Srixon i506

Mizuno MX-23 (the most forgiving of the 3).

Those are 3 candidates off the top.

Definately:

Mizuno MX-23, MX-900

Titleist 804 OS, 775

Hope that helps.

... and the cobra forged cb's. the new model has more offset and is very forgiving. i think it might be one of the best of the forgiving forgings ever made...

I thought the X Tour was outstanding. But it is a little small to be the most forgiving forging as there are some true shovels that more deserve that classification.

My pick would be MacGregor M565's but they feel terrible for a forging and thus cannot qualify as a true forging.

If you can stray from the beaten track, the Wishon 560MC's are the finest playing Game Improvement forged I've ever hit. Very good feel with exceptional playability. Classic appearance at address with low offset, medium width sole with artful leading edge grind and great consistency and accuracy. I wouldn't trade my set straight up for anything and I can play anything I want.

I won,t say "hands down" or the "best" which is ridiculus because everybody is different. If they say for "them" personally thats ok.I can say I have owned 15 sets of primarily forged cbs in last 10 years.ie,MP30,MX23,Hogan Pros,KZG II Ms,Revs black,Pi5s,PTPs,etc.For me personally the current Xtours seem to blend the best attributes of them all.By the way I played a set of x-12s about 9 years ago.I went to Prec.Tour Premiums after x12s.That switch is more drastic than you going to Xtours.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Have to agree that no one specific set of irons will be "best" for everyone, but just looking for some general ideas of what might be reasonably comparable.

After thinking about this a bit, I'm not sure that forged is absolutely essential. What I am really looking for is an iron that is similarly forgiving to the X12s, but has a softer feel. I hit some Ping I5s the other day that had a very soft feel and seemed really solid. It may well be that what I really should have asked was for suggestions on a softer feeling iron, rather than forged.

Sounds to me like the new Wilson Ci6 irons are exactly what you are looking for. Check out the Wilson Staff homepage. These irons are also cleaning up awards in many magazines.

Tourstage 202's are the most forgiving forged iron I have hit. Tough to find these now however. No more new ones and nobody ever wants to part with them!

Hmmm, good choice.

If you want something you might really like, try the G5 in the long to mids - up to 5i or 6i and then i5 in 6i or 7i-PW. To make the flight compatible with the i5, strengthen the loft on the G5 by 1 degree. And don't order off the rack - order custom and specify swingweight....

I actually have a combo set - with the i5 beginning at 7i - I've debated back and forth as to whether I should have started the i5 in the 6i - but after 6 months, I'm very comfy with the G5 6i - they are sooooo easy to hit well. Something to consider if you want soft but very forgiving.

I think it also depends on how much forgiveness you need. Just a little or as much as you can get. I agree the MX-23's are great (anything by mizuno), I obviously love the Nike Pro Combos, but since you're Cally already the X-tours would probably transition well for you.

No longer manufactured but I will go with my long time favorite, Mizuno Comp EZ's. What I wouldn't give to find a new set and stash them back.

i can attest the the forgiving nature of the Comp EZs...i love mine and even compared to the larger cavity back Ping Eye2+ I'm currently testing out in my bag, my Comp EZs have that unmatched buttery Mizuno forged feel. and yes, i did notice the pic of a Sr. PGA player's bag playing them at the Sr. PGA tourney.

I have hit them all and rank them like this:

1. Mizuno MX-900s - just too big for me but a great GI forging

2. Titleist 804s - BOUGHT 'EM!!

3. Mizuno MX-23s - I didn't like the thin top line with the bulging sole on long irons, but they were soft.

4. Callaway X-Tours - very nice

5. Titleist 704s - A slightly smaller, less off-set 804

**EDIT** I forgot about the NEW Titleist 775s. They felt great. Very forgiving but that butt ugly cavity. YUCK!!
