Wood Brothers Texan

This is my first Texan with 11 degree loft. I hope to see it produce a nice high, soft fade! Could end up being my gamer if so!

The Persimmon juices just got pumped up again. On the eve of Freddiec's Bday I headed up on a very crisp fall night and hit this Beauty. This is a late 80s mint Natural Blonde Wood Bros 9 Degree Texan. As solid of a driver as I've hit , as good as it gets in every respect. Old Growth grain, head shape, face profile and overall optics make this club Great. Its got a X100 shaft, 43.5 inches long and a very neat Tacki Mac Pro grip, the face is a tad over 1 and 5/8th inches. I hit a number of drives about 245 with Callaway Chrome soft balls, a few on the screws. Fun times !! A real keeper, the grain and head shape are stunning.

Beautiful club Freddie, I do like a blonde, the Wood Bros certainly know how to make the most out of a piece of timber. I will check out some of the chrome soft balls on my own collection, I have found that the Wilson lower compression models play well with older clubs. They really do give a similar feeling to the old balata, I mainly played the Titleist 100 Tour back in the day but was also fond of the Wilson Pro Staff with the truncated cone dimples which went particularly well in the wind.

yes the old wilson pro staff was a great wind ball. you could really tell the difference.

Well just got back from range and very happy to say that aside of the grip being slick, the new 11 degree Texan did not disappoint! Flushed a number of balls and had three of them one hop of the fence at the back of the range which is 270 yards..!

 

This is a sweet club, going to re-grip it..

Where is the heel on that Texan? The clubface is all toe. Not sure I have ever seen a club with this much asymmetry. Looks very traditional from the top, then has this odd looking face.

 

Not saying this is a bad thing. I've been insulting Hogan fans in another thread, not thick enough to p!$$ off the Wood Bros bros as well...

It really is toe dominant, no question. Really puts a hurt on the golf ball though! I was able to see in the daylight how amazing the grain and grain are today and it is very pretty. Going to need to name this driver..

Umm two things. First, not planning to sleep with my Texan or any other clubs, my wife would get jealous..! Second, the name should be reflective of the classiest it represents. Perhaps, Elenor after the Shelby Mustang!

Here are some pics of a WB Corker I picked up a few years ago, even though it's not a Texan (or some of the other rarer versions) you can see the quality work WB did. Still a sweet stick all the years later.

 

This is a beautiful, original Corker!

 

Rather quickly, Dave Wood changed the sole plate design, eliminating the popping cork, so your club is a little scarce.

 

The Corker F wood was also a rare, early club produced only 1 season. The success of the Corker line resulted in numbered 3 and 5 wood models by year 2.

 

Another rare, experimental WB club was the Kool Cat Lob Wood - a high lofted, heavy sole plate model, modeled after MacGregor 6 and 7 woods.

I didn't realize I had one of the earlier more scarce soleplated ones until it was mention on another thread somewhere (or maybe it was earlier in this thread?) anyway glad you guys with knowledge are willing to share! Now I just need to get my hands on a Texan without the boss knowing ?

Not going to pi$$ off anyone with "big" in their name. If they aren't physically big and it is an ironic sort of thing, they're probably... erm... slightly unhinged.

 

And I'm a Mac guy anyway. Would be pooing on my own doormat.

 

Not my bag, but do appreciate the Wood Brothers and the Hogans. Which one is best? Bros before Hoes...

The 11 deg Texan might be different looking and off to ones eye , but I bet it was next to impossible to get one like it from anybody else.

Yeah, this 11 degree driver is the first with that loft I can remember seeing. It was fun to use and will look forward to re-gripping it and trying it again!

Picked this up a few days ago. Wood Bros MB 52 degree wedge. Curious if anyone knows if this was a special build wedge or perhaps part of a set of MB irons.

great looking wedge-the desigh checks all the boxes for me. never seen a WB wedge .

I believe the 52* wedge was produced after Dave Wood sold the company to a Korean gentleman.

 

There are sets of muscle back irons with this design out there - possibly Hoffman forgings.

 

Charlie Wood worked for the new WB owner for a time, before moving to MacGregor , in Albany, with Dave, and then to PLOP.

 

Later, Charlie was involved in real estate investment in Houston. He and David built and sold a few houses near downtown Houston while Dave had his art studio near by. Dave's house and studio were about 10 blocks from my lab for several years. During that time, I reconnected with Dave, and we used to have lunch together, or meetings in my office - which generally turned into 3-4 hour golf discussions. During this time I bought many Wood Bros and MacGregor clubs from Dave, which were a big boost to my collections.

 

I retired to consulting and Dave moved to the Bay Area - and I miss the friendship and conversations.

Just got this one delivered today. Promotional Kool Kat "Lemon Head" F1 Driver, G. Loomis stiff shaft. Overall in great condition and can't beat the price, $19.99!

In one of our phone conversations, Dave Wood informed me LH Corkers were produced, but to date, I have not seen one.

 

The same applies with LH WB Championship model irons.

 

Freddie said there were a limited number of LH WB irons produced for the Japanese market.
