Wood Brothers Texan

Recommended Posts

Don't know whereabouts in Europe you are, but I'm sure Roger Morton at Golf Only in Shifnal, UK could do that.

Thanks for your reply Blade Junkie.

I would be interested in someone doing the shaft replacement either in the US, or in Europe (Germany).

Does Roger Morton do a really nice work?

Do you have any experience with his work on persimmon woods?

Yes he does - he was the official club guy for Ben Hogan UK in the 80s, and also did various bits of club work for Ian Woosnam, Peter Baker and a few others from his neck of the woods.

I have used him for hickory driver repairs and restoration, and it has been top notch work, including the hard stuff like replacing the rams horn on the sole leading edge. He re-shafted a Jack White hickory driver for me, which is now a fixture in the hickory bag.

Obviously he's not in Germany or the USA, but no harm in giving him a call to discuss. Not cheap, but good value for the skilled work that goes into it, plus you always get what you pay for in my opinion !

Personally, I feel the "hunt" and "capture" is the most enjoyable part of hoarding, I mean collecting. Of course, after the "capture", it's always rewarding to "show off" your find so others can be encouraged to do the same. It's a sickness, I know...

For me it's the stumbling across a great player either by accident or design. You never know when you'll find one until you do.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Tough question, but, having come from a theory to practice background, for me it is the moment of truth, when the ball springs off the face with the sweet sound of muted thunder and the sphere flys as if hurled by the hammer of Thor.

Randy, how do you come up with such intellectual thoughts in the f'in middle of the night???

Just took delivery of these sweet clubs! A Texan, quite likely a tour model having the WRW insert and X100 DG shaft. Really nice grain on this one! Also a 3 & 4-wood also with X100 DG shafts and nice grain. Seller included these old school head covers too which was a nice touch..

Enjoy!

Yeah, it is a nice looking club. Likely going to take it out for a few swings before I clean it up. Shaft should be a good fit for me too but we shall see.

You got any new additions to the collection recently Freddie? Since I bought the Augustian from you think I have picked up 7 drivers and 3 fairway woods, so been on a good but expensive run of late..

A quick summary for me -

I just made a quick Wood Bros wood count - 71 woods - but may have missed a couple.

7 drivers made for/played by major champions.

5 other Tour players clubs.

Several early prototype clubs - never sold at retail forged A-wedge(avatar), Lob Wood, and Kool Cat Cruisers + limited retail clubs like the Convertible wood, and several experimental/prototype wood model finishes.

Multiple Texans, All Americans, Japan Tributes, an Australian, Kool Cats(in all colors + experimentals) and Corkers -

About a dozen custom Kool Cat and Corker drivers commissioned for companies and tournament prizes.

An Augusta National custom Kool Cat for an AN member -

An example of each of all 3 left hand Wood Bros drivers - Texan, Corker, Kool Cat

Complete set of WB hand forged Bench Mark 60s putters + experimental and Kool Cat putters

Examples of all Wood Bros iron sets, forged and cast + and examples of all Wood Bros metal woods.

Several Charlie Wood - post Dave Wood clubs

Tex, that's seriously impressive!

That's a product of buying Wood Bros clubs since the late 1980s. I was a very early customer of Dave Wood, even before he introduced The Texan. We used to trade classic clubs way back, at his shop in Humble, Texas, north of Houston. My job took me to places where used clubs were much more numerous than new ones in golf shops - like S Africa, Australia, Thailand, and Japan. Bought and sold hundreds of MacGregor woods, Wilson DynaPower SW, and putters - Ping and Wilson 8802, Palmer, and Designed By Palmer putters.

I had the privilege of picking my own Wood Bros heads from Dave's oil soaking tanks, which were installed on the roof of his shop. I saw clubs being made for many Tour players in the shop. I recall specifically drivers for Bob Tway and Andy Bean - a Wilson Staff player - Dave made drivers for him using his persimmon with Wilson sole plates.

This morning drove up to my favorite range that stocks Callaway Chrome soft range balls. Glorious warm September day. I haven't hit a persimmon in almost a year, gave it a go with this Mark Brooks custom Wood Bros Texan I picked up years ago. Hit it really good.

The sweet sound and feel of Wood Bros persimmon - love it!

Hammer of the Gods! Drive our ships to new lands!

With the affects of Latitude, Coriolis acceleration, Earth rate, and Gravity anomaly being minuscule with regard to the distance traveled by a golf ball, we can disregard these and strickly use Newtons 2nd law, F=ma when projecting the Great Circle Interial Navigation of our ship(the ball) traveling to new(hopefully short grass) new lands.
