Wood Brothers Texan

Recommended Posts

Tough question, but, having come from a theory to practice background, for me it is the moment of truth, when the ball springs off the face with the sweet sound of muted thunder and the sphere flys as if hurled by the hammer of Thor.

Hammer of the Gods! Drive our ships to new lands!

With the affects of Latitude, Coriolis acceleration, Earth rate, and Gravity anomaly being minuscule with regard to the distance traveled by a golf ball, we can disregard these and strickly use Newtons 2nd law, F=ma when projecting the Great Circle Interial Navigation of our ship(the ball) traveling to new(hopefully short grass) new lands.

"To fight the horde" (squeezing thru the gallery on the 72nd hole of The Open Championship).

"Sing and cry" (cheers from the crowd)

"Valhalla, I am coming" (to the scorer's tent I go)

"I shall ride eternal to the gates of Valhalla, shiny and chrome"

Very excited on this new acquisition! Finally picked up a Lefty Texan!

This is very cool from the standpoint that it has the WB Winged Logo on the Crown and a Tour WRW Insert. I need to get this over to Dave Wood to see what he may know. Likely will need to clean it up somewhat but never the less, it is on its way!!

I will get pictures when I can..

Congratulations CC!

I saw it and passed - been there - done that.

I know rex235 was interested also, but you pulled the trigger quickly.

Great looking club!

Thanks Tex! I was able to negotiate the club to a good price. Sent an email to DW to see what he knows about it. I did find out that this came from Bob Dampier who owned a Ben Hogan Golf Shop in Houston, TX for almost 40 years. Apparently this Texan was given to him from Dave or someone from the Humble WB Factory but as he was right handed, he never used it.

If I'm remembering right, your LH head typically has no back weight, indicating really dense WB, oil hardened wood - another reason why Wood Bros blocks were/are so valued.

Another possibility is a LH Hogan player traded it.

Don't know, but Mike Weir was a huge Hogan fan, modeling his swing after the man.

Need a list of Hogan staff members.

CC-

You got it before everyone told me about it. Nice pickup.

Yours is one of the older LH Texans, but am pretty sure Texsport has the 1st LH WB Texan...

Sam Adams was a Hogan staffer, and the first American LH PGA Tour winner (1973 Quad Cities Open). Could have been his.

Yes, I know... New Zealander Bob Charles won the 63 British Open Championship, the '68 Canadian Open, and '74 Greensboro Open

Have written Sam Adams, but no response yet.

Mike Weir used a set of Apex Plus irons in one of his PGA Tour wins.

As for me- don't worry...

Already have a few LH restorations by Dave Wood, including this LH Texan, the M09 copy, as well as the Black Swan*

Here is my most recent addition to the WB collection. A Lefty Texan. Certainly has seen some action, but nothing that some time in the shop won't address. Love that it has the winged WB logo on the crown and unique W/R/W insert.

Nice!

You and Texsport will just have to duke it out as to which of your LH Texans is older.

Both appear to be from the same vintage, so when you ask Dave Wood, perhaps he can tell which of the brothers is the elder.

Note the position of your "Oil Hardened" stamp....

  • 2 weeks later...

I heard back from Dave Wood regarding the Lefty Texan.

He said " Tour players paid wholesale for them until 1993. Left Handed Texans were expensive to make and are very rare. I hand crafted them.

The one that you have acquired is from 1987-88 and was crafted at the 101 Main Street workshop. I was making them for Phil Michelson, Ernie Gonzalez, Phil Blackmar and other top leftie amateur and pro's at that time. This one that you have has seen a lot of play and judging from the wear in the hitting area- had been played with by a very good ball striker.

Let me know if you are interested in selling it".

Seems pretty cool that Dave is interested in purchasing it from me!

Here are some pics of my Texan. Really wanted this one because of the 11* of loft. Makes it much easier for me to play with modern balls. I get a great launch angle with it.

Only two things I would have liked would be for better horseshoe grain and the WB stamping on the top. But still very happy to have it :)

Dpark,

That is a nice driver! 11 degree drivers are somewhat rare.. I have one myself (posted pictures earlier in this forum) that the insert has a Heel Bias to it, pronounced Toe and S400 shaft. It provides me some lovely high cuts off the tee and is my current WB Gamer driver. Mine does not have the Winged WB logo on it, nor does it have serial numbers, as it was a custom build..

BTW, love the Hogan Irons you have in the background!

Thanks CC. As I have posted in other classic clubs threads on this site, I need 11* or more of loft on my driver to hit it well. My gamer is the Tommy Armour AT2W driver which has 12* of loft and is super easy to hit. I bring out the WB from time to time, but don't put too much use on it, and definitely no range rocks.

I am a bit of a Hogan ho. I've got a dozen sets from 1972 onward. I used to have a bunch more but pruned them back a bit. The one directly behind the WB driver is the 35th anniversary iron set which I believe was a Japan only edition. Basically looks like the Medallions but without the medallion. The set to the right are the white cameos.

I too have been known to have a few too many sets of Hogan irons but like you, I have scaled back quite a bit. In my Hogan (Store display with Ben's famous 1-Iron shot) I have really nice sets of Hogan Apex II (Black Cameo), 25th Anniversary Medallion's, 93 Forged and 88 Redlines. I also have about a dozen really nice Hogan Drivers including one used by Tom Kite!

CC we should compare collections sometime :)

I also have the store display frame in my office with the 72 Apex, 92 Ft Worth Redlines and the Personals

And of course a framed full size photo of the 1-iron shot with his autograph
