Wood Brothers Texan

Who bought the 9 degree Texan this morning? I was going to best offer $200. Pretty sure it belonged to Bill Glasson who may been the best ball striker on tour at the time he played it.

You mean this one? If so it was me. This was owned by Gene Sauers. Not sure it was a gamer or not. I would bet made to his specs but not gamed. I’ll try to find out.

Fred mentioned it to me. I asked the seller and he confirmed as he has ties to Sauers. I will attempt to verify from Gene.

Freddie-

It seems as if there are quite a few WBs to hit the marketplace this year.

Very nice club!

Gene Sauers would have been there at Salem CC for this years USGA Senior Open-

Sauers was the Defending Champion, winning the Senior Open last year at Scioto CC in Columbus.

Sauers also lost the US Senior Open to Colin Montgomerie at Oak Hill a few years earlier in a playoff, so it's good to see him back in form.

Here is a Texan driver that was in Gene Sauers' collection that I just picked up. 43.5 ", 9 degree with S-400 shaft. It looks like it sits square to a degree open. Great block and very solid. We had an unusually warm day here in Fort Collins today (74 degree high). I hit 4 balls with the Sauers Texan the best of which was the 4th drive that produced a very slight fade and ended up being 265 yards (a bit downwind and 5,100 foot elevation). There is just something about these tour blocks from Wood Brothers.

Nice 10 degree you got there.

Robot-

Is there any reason there's no 9 degree stamp in the soleplate?

....Anybody else with a (USGA Senior Open Champion) Gene Sauers Wood Bros Texan Driver?.

Rex, not sure why some sole plates didn't have a degree stamping on them. Maybe some of the pros requested something between a 9 and 10 so a sole plate with degree stamping wasn't applicable. No idea.

Dave Wood's - Texas Golf Co - was the 1st company to put lofts on the sole plates of woods.

Most pros were more used to no loft on their clubs - just 1,3,4 or 5 - so Dave let them have it how they wanted.

Only custom Wood Bros Texans have no loft on them.

All retail and PGA Tour representative driving range gifted Wood Bros Texans had lofts.

Wood Bros Tour Rep Dick Meckley gave these to players at Tour events. Dave Wood also worked the range at some Tour events - Houston always.

Mr Meckley took custom orders for Texans and his personal , Dave Wood produced DM19, Wood Bros line of drivers which had swept back sole plates - which many pros liked and associated with the classic MacGregor clubs. The clubs were also usually finished black, another pro preference, with red fiber inserts. DM19 stands for Dick Meckley and his year of birth.

I'll post a Dick Meckley when I get a chance.

Here is the third WB Texan and I was able to acquire from Chip, Gene Sauer’s friend. This Texan seems fairly unique because of the toe shape and the length of the face profile which measures 3 1/4 inches as well as the insert shape. It’s in excellent original condition. It Measures 43 3/8 inches long has a swing weight of D3, S400 shaft. It sets up really great to my eye. Chip told me Gene played a driver 43.5 and a tad under as well. This might have been a custom club.

Here's a bit about Dick Meckley (from Dave Wood) as well as one of the DM19s that I had. It was a great club. Unfortunately the specs weren't for me.

The sweepbacks are quite interesting... Made very few. The DM19 on your driver, stands for Dick Meckley born 1919. Dick was an old pro and PGA Tour rep. He was a good friend of Ben Hogan's and represented the Hogan company in the late 70s' and early 80s'. After leaving Hogan, he joined Roger Cleveland in the early 80s' when Roger was promoting his Cleveland Classics on the Tour. Dick joined me in 1988 and worked on the Tour for WB until 1994. He wanted some Drivers made up with a simple "Sweep back" style plate (DM19 was a tribute to him). Dick was a straight forward, old school Pennsylvania dutchman, child of the Great Depression and WW2 vet who fought against the Japanese in the Pacific theater. He was an Icon on the Tour. Although he worked for me, he seemed to boss me around quite a bit. Mr. Meckley was a life coach and father figure to many of the players.

Your DM19 has 11" h X 7"v roll. 7 " vertical is a lot. This means the loft above the center of the face is about 10.5 and around 7.5 below center. Really skilled ball strikers did this sometimes. They could hit high launch drives by catching the ball higher on the face. Then hit burner drives when striking it below center. The FMC 6.7 composite is a tapered shaft that appears to be factory installed. We used a resin/epoxy that was very similar to the shaft resin that caused for an extremely tight bond. The FMC 6.7 composite shaft is tapered to emulate tapered steel shaft's that players preferred when the club was built.

Here is one to add to the discussion. Just received it this afternoon. Very nice Texan, WRW insert, older model due to the WB winged logo on the crown. BUT a first for me, it has engraved on the back of the club, just beside the Wood Bros engraving the word WYNNER!

Perhaps a tour club due to the insert but certainly some sort of promotional club too!
