Smacking an autographed Texan around? Got to admire your priorities, BJ!

If there's ever a need for a worm cull in the UK, you and I need to team up with your Woosie and my Jupiter Slugger.

Couldn't resist hitting it! As much as possible :)

I figured the real 'value' was in the club itself rather than a bit of ink on the face ... plenty of Woosnam autograph stuff out there.

I'll be up in Scotland in mid/late October for about 10 days - whereabouts are you ?

I'm in Edinburgh, but work in Glasgow. Some say I bestride the country like a colossus... :)

October could be grand weather for golfing in the lothians, or huddling in a Glasgow pub. Either way, there should be no midgies. If you think you're going to be at a loose end, give me a shout.

Why would the club be non-conforming?
Because it is "corked", like a baseball bat, and that is not USGA compliant. I remember not buying these cheaper WB drivers 20 years ago because they weren't legal for play, Kool-Cats and Corkers.

Someone is misinformed!

There is no rule for minimum weight of a golf club, and there is no rule against corking a golf club! (at least not back when Wood Bros was making clubs)------(there is a rule against corking in baseball for reduced weight to increase bat speed).

Dave Wood learned how to do it when working on Ben Hogan's driver. He also learned from Jackie Burke that Arnold Palmer did the same thing. Hogan had newspaper and lead stuffed into a drilled out cavity under his sole plate.

The idea is to raise the center of gravity, and possibly also move it forward to lower trajectories with the old, high spinning wound golf balls.

If it was illegal, than Hogan and Palmer stole a bunch of majors! NOT!

Foam, glue, and all sorts of things are added to modern golf clubs......legally.

BTW - Dave Wood also invented cork grips to INCREASE the swingweight of putters. Changing grip weights on all clubs is a common practice today.

What is "corked like a baseball bat"??

I thought baseball bats are made of wood--well, wood and aluminum?

KM
A corked baseball bat is a wooden bat, where some of the barrel of the bat is drilled out and replaced with cork. The idea behind it is to make a heavier bat lighter, allowing you to use the theoretical larger dimensions of the heavier bat, with the weight of a lighter bat.

Generally speaking, lighter bats can be swung faster, and this higher bat speed produces greater distance. In slow pitch softball, where the distance must be generated nearly 100% from bat speed, there was a big move from heavier bats to the low end of allowed weight spectrum, even by many/most of the giants of the game.

There are some folks who believe the reduction of weight in the barrel actually creates a loss of distance, and that the corked bat is as much placebo as anything. There are also those who believe the data behind this line of thought is flawed. It's a lovely debate. :/

Anyway, there you have it. :)

Major league baseball players often order lighter bats as the season progresses, and they begin to tire from months of playing nearly every day. The historical records kept by Hillerich & Bradsby aka Louisville Slugger, clearly show this.

Corked bats produce greater bat speed, which may produce more home runs, but more than that, allow tiring players the ability to catch up with those 100 mph fastballs late in the year.

My memory may be off on the conformity of The Corker. I suppose it is a matter of intention with the USGA, as long as they weren't trying to create a spring effect with the addition of cork. Drilling the bottom to raise weight to hit lower drives using a balata would be a different intent. Why add cork, if not to intend a spring effect. As it turned out it hardly mattered then or now. I played The Corker Sunday and hit it very poorly, too low. Whatever their intention, with a ProV1 or likely any modern ball, The Corker is a bit of a stinker. It is back to the old MacGregors for me.

I've only played 9 holes this year ! Gone are the days when I could get in 35 rounds a year... ( I have young kids now)... I played great in late may when I got in 9, but tomorrow will be bagging one of my favorite persimmon drivers ( a 10 Deg WB Texan ) during an 18 hole round with a group of 16 guys. My friend is getting married and his bachelor party golf outing is being played at one of the best seaside courses in New England and the 1st time I'm playing here.

The only reason to add cork is to reduce weight. There's no flex created in a corked baseball bat, I don't believe it's possible to be done in a clubhead, either. They can make a larger than otherwise possible clubhead out of persimmon, due to some of the volume of the clubhead being occupied by the less dense cork.

I was not involved with golf at the time of the Corker's introduction, unfamiliar with its volume specs. Anyone know how large it is?

It looks normal persimmon size. Volume was not their goal.
Additionally, there is a weight port at the back of the head, presumably to get the weight right.

It has always been my understanding that cork was added to bats for pop, they thought it would hit the ball further, not for weight reasons. Like The Corker the batter made sure his corked bat still weighed in at 32 oz.

An interesting note, relating to the corked baseball bats...

Corking a bat may still be done, but it may also be less necessary than in Ye Olde Dayes. Somewhere in the relatively recent past, MLB had quietly implemented a reduction in size of the barrel of the bats, unofficially at first, and more recently officially adding it to the rules. So, a bat of 34" length will now be lighter than a same length bat from 30 years ago.

I found that fairly interesting.

Also not relevant to Woods Bros persimmons, so now back to regularly scheduled posting...

Well WB fans, here are some early pictures of my Peter Jacobson AA as I refinish it (again..). I was not happy with the last job I did, so starting over. I will be removing the white score lines and leave them unpainted this time (unless you have a better idea). I am still planning to keep the Speed Slot black as I think it looks great that way.

As this club has beautiful U shaped grain, I will use a lighter stain color so it shows better than before. The sole plate will be nice but I cannot fix the stone chunk unfortunately..

A great find!

Dave lists IW as a customer on his website.

That may be the lightest stain I've ever seen on a Texan, and a rare insert color combination.

As requested, I've asked Dave for comments.

Thanks Tex ! Does Dave have records of all his 'Tour' clubs ? This one seems very low lofted compared to my other Texans!

I hadn't even realised the insert was different to the usual Texan white-black-white until you mentioned it :)

Dave Wood has messaged me that he made several drivers and Fairway Instruments for Woosie.

X-200 was standard and his clubs were bored with a slightly flat lie.

Thanks Tex ... nice to hear there are a few out there! Seems quite common for these Top Guys to have had multiple drivers to choose from.

This one is 43" , with a Green Victory grip, normal size. Does seem a little flat, and the loft is about 8° or 9° by my rudimentary measurement !

Woosie when young hit a draw off the tee with his persimmons, but as his bad back took over, this understandably became a fade, as he couldn't get his hips through the shot so well.

I don't know the time line. but my guess is that , even when the WB corker was built, that MOI was not a term in the USGA's vocabulary. The Corker had to be just a way to reduce, an d maybe redistribute the mass of the clubhead. Either way,Coralray, if your test of the club is accurate, the cork experiment was not successful. .
stick with the tried and true . vintage Golfcraft/Titleists and of course macs, for me.
Maybe an occasional PowerBilt..
...or Joe Powell..
...or Cleveland...
Then again, Rex235 showed me an awesome Haig Ultra (Persimmon!) which looked sweeeet.
I think it is time to have another Club-Ho Anonymous meeting again.

Thanks again for another visit.

Am glad you liked the Black Swan.

If there's enough interest we'll post the 1969 WH Persimmon Model 66 Haig Ultra on the Hagen thread..

Played one of the Haig's old haunts yesterday...It was fabulous.

Brought the Ben Hogan BAP Texan 2 to hit one shot....

Rex, I played Kittansett today. The weather was great, 78 to 80 degrees mostly sunny and just a light breeze. One of the most beautiful courses I have played. I hit my 9 deg Blonde Texan well off 4 tees. Bens backup driver which I showed to the head pro. He studied it and was in awe... He was about 55 yrs of age. I will post course pics later. The cally chrome soft was great w my WB...
