Any info on Hank Haney's plane finder?

I saw a brief picture of what looked like someone swinging their club through a bunch of tiny gates, not sure I could find it again but it was in the pictures for the 2011 merchandise show. And here is the website saying that the Plane Finder is coming soon http://theplanefinder.com/ but I am interested to hear if anyone has any first hand knowledge about this thing??

I am always struggling to stop coming inside (or outside) the plane which usually ends up in a very flat swing and think that maybe this is something worth looking at!

Don't know anything about this particular training aid.

However, this video by Shawn Clement helped me a lot with my swing plane, especially with developing how an on-plane swing should feel for my body type and set up.

Shawn's swing is somewhat upright. For a good discussion regarding flattening vs. steepening influences on the swing plane, this video by Jeff Ritter is helpful.

Thanks I appreciate the links!

Since this thread I read, or heard a tip about keeping your thumbs up and "hitching a ride" on your backswing and follow through. Sounds elementary enough, but I got into a terrible habit where my shaft was moving down beneath my shoulder plane on the backswing. Needless to say it was helpful, but it is sure hard to break a habit like that!

Here's a thumbnail sketch on the subject of changing habits.

Trying to break a habit tends to focus one's attention on it, and effectively only serves to reinforce what you are doing wrong. We don't break old habits, we develop new habits that are more useful, and eventually replace the old habits because they are more useful.

A better way to think of things is to focus on what you want to do (i.e., focus on the new habit you are trying to develop). The brain will reinforce whatever you focus on.

One other aspect of this is a concept I learned from Ernest Jones (Swing the Clubhead). He says that there are many more incorrect elements of the swing than there are correct elements. Therefore, it is much easier to focus on learning what is correct than it is to try and eliminate what is incorrect.

One of my favorite sayings, that I learned from Tom O'Brien of TFNN is "Whatever you think about, you bring about. Whatever you focus on grows."

Well, I bought one and returned it two hours later. I think it's good if you have a major swing flaw, this will help you identify it. I don't think it has real long term value. I can't see using it over and over again like I do the Tour Striker.

All it did for me was identify that my swing is on plane. Any issues I have must be related to the club face or release timing.

The construction is a bit flimsy for $119. It could use another cross member for additional stability instead of just one at the front of the device.

I really wanted to like it, but I quickly realized it wasn't for me.

Just got mine. It depends on what your needs are. If you are working on getting on plane this device may be great for you. If your issues are related to something else --- not so much. that said, I have only used it once so far. About 2 hrs later I had my best ball striking of the year so far as the Plane Finder clearly showed me that I was moving around way too much.

I honestly cannot wait to take it to the range and use the Tour Striker with it.

A 99 cent dowel rod from the hardware store is the best training aid to teach you the feel of plane.

I have a golf buddy who used all these devices simultaneously while also using the Explanar device ( http://www.intheholegolf.com/store/explanar.html ). He believes that this will cut 12 strokes off his index but he won't know until he gets out of traction :-)

My plan was to put a hinge on my tour striker and then fill the shaft with sand :man_in_love: .

I picked one up yesterday for $99 at Golftown. Took it to the range today and had mixed results. First off they don't explain how to adjust the thing for your height, just that you can. It also doesn't tell you where to put the ball but from looking at the video I figured it out. I fiddled with it a bit and seemed to get it set up fine. I set it on the beginner setting and started with my 7 iron. I am a 15 index and my issue is that I have a very flat swing and hook the ball. This device seems more set up for a slice than a hook. I was able to hit big hooks with my 7 iron on the beginner and intermediate settings, it wasn't until I put it on the hardest level that I would hit the indicators. That being said once I did this I was able to get some great feedback. I would say the take away was the biggest help as I was bringing it back SO far inside it was funny. By the end of a large bucket I was striping most of my 5 irons. I'm still not sold 100% on it but I'll give it a few more range sessions and see how it goes.

If you follow Hank Haney at all his primary belief is that swing plane is the most important aspect of the golf swing. I share the same beliefs as Hank and appreciate all he does for the game of golf. I purchased the plane finder and it absolutely does its job which is to keep you on plane from hip high to hip high. It will not make you swing like Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy or make you an instant Tour contender. If you put it on the hardest setting and have a sound grip and setup, it is impossible to hit a bad shot. Furthermore, the hidden secret of this device is that it allows you to feel the proper takeaway which, in my opinion, is the most important part of the swing and is worth every bit of $119. Bottom line, this is a must buy for the serious golfer who has the desire and motivation to improve.

i just take my two alignment sticks and make a plane gate just like what that device is.

I'm not sure what you mean by "plane gate" but I have heard others say it also really helps with the takeaway so I'm not sure it would be the same effect.

is there anyone who has actually used this that has some feedback on it to share?

I got this becuase I too have had issues with my swing plane, specifically on the take away, coming in too far inside and back through too far inside with all kinds of issues resulting. I few hours of practice I got the jist of the correct "plane". Here is my full review posted at

Hank Haney PlaneFinder Review and Video

This is a review of the Hank Haney Planefinder a Golf Swing Trainer that helps a golfer develop a golf swing that is "on plane". The review has two parts.

Part one is the assembly and part two is a video showing actual use of the product.

Part 1

I received the PlaneFinder which is packaged in a box with lots of nice color photos of the product and product parts. The box should be used as a visual aid when assembling the product.

P1010260.jpg.scaled500.jpg What I found in the box was a clean package of parts in a sealed bag and some instructions. I opened up the bag and laid out the parts to begin the assembly process.

arrowleft.gif arrowright.gif1 of 2P1010261.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010262.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010261.jpg.scaled500.jpg

All parts look a little intimidating at first but I went ahead and began the process of putting things together, making note of my watch as I began with instructions in hand. The first step was laying out the base of the product as per the instructions.

Then I went about connecting each of the individual parts continuing to follow the instructions which are pretty well written. It all came together pretty quickly. (click through my photos below to see the progression).

arrowleft.gif arrowright.gif1 of 3P1010263.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010264.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010265.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010263.jpg.scaled500.jpg

With the base complete, the last few steps involve adjustments for the proper swing angle and the adjustment of the width of the path. The width adjustment is simple, it is color coded with a flip lock that is widest when it is at or in the green position and narrow when at or near the red position (from the right of the device). To properly adjust open the flip lock slide the base parts apart to the desired width (again I recommend starting in the "green position), then lock into place. As explained in the DVD and instructions, you want to start swing with a wider path opening until you hone in your swing with the device.

arrowleft.gif arrowright.gif1 of 6P1010266.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010267.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010268.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010269.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010271.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010270.jpg.thumb.jpgP1010266.jpg.scaled500.jpg The next step is to adjust the angle so that your club rests naturally into the swing path without hitting the plastic pennants.

There is an optional hitting board that you can use that provides some feedback when practicing as explained by Hank Haney in the DVD. See the final assembled PlaneFinder below. All told it took me 15 minutes to assemble, even while taking pictures as I went. It is not a difficult process.

P1010272.jpg.scaled500.jpg

Here is a quick video of the PlaneFinder in my backyard and a bit about how it works and why.

(download)

I really like that I can use it in my backyard and get instant feedback on my swing. I'm guessing that most things that are wrong with the swing have to do with not swinging on plane and this device helps hone in the proper swing if you use it frequently.

The cost is $119, which is less than the cost of most clubs and can potentially lower your score by much more than buying a bunch of new clubs with crazy claims of more distance and accuracy. It also comes with an instructional DVD with Hank Haney who provides some basic fundamental instruction and tips on using the PlaneFinder.

You can get more info and buy one at the Planefinder Web site http://www.theplanefinder.com

Anyone use the super swing trainer?

It looks pretty cool, and since it's made out of PVC, it's much cheaper than the metal swing plane machines.

I am not sold on the Hank Haney plane finder because it looked cheap when I saw it at golfsmith, and it close in price to the super swing trainer, so I have been leaning toward the latter of the two.

I will check YouTube for some reviews, but I would like to hear from the community as well, if anyone is familiar with the Super Swing Trainer.

Thanks in advance.

Gary Wiren's Power Swing Fan is the ONLY gadget I own. N'uff said !

Did Hank Haney sell that garbage to ALL of his "students" on all of his "Projects"? I didn't see it in ANY program! Did Charles Barkley buy one?

Nothing can substitute as a "good" teaching Pro!

That's my opinion and, I'm sticking to it!

Any new updates? Finally hooked up the swingbyte and my planes are all jacked up. Thinking this would help especially as I need instant feedback.

I bought this because it was on sale from golftown for 25$ or something like that. I used it a couple of times in my backyard. It works pretty well but it's very impractical. It's been sitting in the garage ever since. You deff cannot bring this to the range, unless you don't mind being "that guy".

Conclusion: I wouldn't buy it again. And I would never buy it for $119.

well this would be for a garage setup. I know some are recommending a box 3 inches up but I dont think that would work well with my learning style.

I know its not the be all end all, but for someone struggling to get and stay on plane would this be beneficial to groove feeling?
