If you get out to Greendale, you'll probably darn near be alone. I've closed the course down a couple times in the past three weeks. Just me and the last guys manning the shop rolling out at 7:45pm, or so.

They can usually get you out on either nine, and it's an easy walk. Probably going to play mid-afternoon, tomorrow. Hope the rain holds off for me by then.

Thanks for the info. I'm coming from downtown DC, so Greendale is actually the quickest to get to (assuming traffic is decent). It'll give me the best chance of getting more than 9 holes in.

Haven't played Blue Mash, but if the pin placements are in tough spots at Waverly Woods it could definitely cause some problems.

I've always loved Waverly's greens. Since the course opened in 1998 (?) it annualy has what I think are the best conditioned best rolling greens of any daily fee course in the area. When it first opened I know they used to keep the very fast all the time. It seems over the past couple years they have let them slow down a bit, but still very true in the way they roll.

Thanks for the tip. Got there just before 5 and walked straight onto the course. Waited a little here and there but finished the front in about an hour and a half, which included multiple shots and some putting and chipping while waiting. Played 6 holes on the back in about an hour (skipped 11 and 12 to pass a foursome) before I ran into some groups finishing and so I just cut from 16 back to 2 and hit a couple drives and wedges. Easy walk, like you said, but some challenging holes like 6, 13 and 16. 17 looked interesting but I didn't get to play it.

It was pretty busy when we got there at 2pm. When we left at 5:40, it was winding down, a lot.

16 is another hole we treat as a tweener par 3 masquerading as a par 4. I poked a 3i up the hill today, to leave myself a little tiny chip in to that small green. Still bogeyed it.

Re: #6 -- it is getting ridiculous how often they put that pin [u][i][b]in[/b][/i][/u] the ridge of the green. The tee shot isn't that hard, but the putt from anywhere you end up, other than 1' from the hole, is sure going to be a ride. Good luck getting it that close though, huh?

I actually thought 16 was a par 4 when I saw it, although, I was able to hit a 5W pin high, so I can't complain at all. Yeah, the pin placement on 6 was ridiculous, and this is on slow, April greens. I can't imagine them putting it there during the warmer months. It's a small green too, that you don't realize from the tee. Another tricky pin placement was on 5, down on the front portion of the green where it is the steepest. I was 25 feet above the hole and putted off the front.

 

Gonna check out twilight at Twin Lakes today with a few buddies, but I'm expecting a much slower pace of play.

They do that front pin on 15 too, same type of slope off the front, and if you are above the hole, you're off the front 90% of the time.

Played at Twin Lakes yesterday, teed off at 4:15, finished 18 at 7:45. Not too bad for a threesome for the front and twosome on the back nine. $30 was their super twilight rate.

Conditions at the Oaks course are actually pretty good considering the time of the year, greens are slow as to be expected, but not as bumpy as they can be this early in the season. Fairways were great and tees for the most part were good. Very impressed actually, it had been a while since I'd been there. I'll definitely be back this season.

That was wierd, thanks. Another thing that has been happening to me of late, is I'll post below in a thread where I already have a quoted post and I get a response saying I have too many quoted posts in the topic. This happens sometimes even if there is just one previous quote from me. Kind of wierd.

As for the contest, I've been known to make a 30 footer now and then, usually for a double or triple. So my favorite saying goes "that's like putting whip cream on sh**" I stole it from Steve Czaban several years ago, but it always gets a laugh!!

That's a great quote. I make 30 footers for bogeys, dubs, and trips all the time too. But I also miss a lot from inside 6 feet. Evens out I guess.

Sounds like a good way to spend a Friday afternoon. However, it's my last day before a week of vacation, so I will be busy in the office.

Enjoy it if you do get out. Remmember we may be playing Laurel Hills late morning early afternoon on June 17, so I'll keep you posted on our plans.

And GolfNow has been down for maintenance, anyone know other good sites for discounted green fees?

I've tentatively reserved Twin Lakes at 1:24 tomorrow, the Oaks Course. Another friend of mine is coming, so I have two spots open. I'm still going to try to get Westfields, but only if GolfNow is back online by 1 pm today, unless you guys want to pay $100 for the round. LOL.

PM...Yeah that's the way it always goes. Hopefully you'll be out of town somewhere where you can still watch the US Open, that's the final round. Although with it being played in S.F. It will be a prime time finish here. I think I saw the leaders will tee off about 4:30 EST which means finishing about 9:00 or so. That's why I figure we can get a 11:00 or 12:00 tee time and still be done in time to see the final groups play all 18 holes.

Then the next mornign we have an early wake up call for our 6:00 AM Tee Off to the Solstice Tournament. In years past when we have done this, we always played a late afternoon sunday round, usually finishing around 8:30 or so. When we get back to the course at 5:00 AM it feels like we just left there a few hours before....Fun times

So is Golfnow a pretty good way of getting deals on greens fees. Does it work better for last minute times? I haven't really looked at it before, but maybe I should take a look.

Golfnow is pretty good. I'm not sure if they do anything for last minute stuff - it doesn't look like it but I haven't really studied the site that well. It seems like they have relationships with a number of courses and when there are big gaps coming up in their tee times they pitch a few deep discounted times out to see if anyone bites.

I set the filter at >35/40% off and see what comes up. There's usually a few sweet deals on some decent courses.

Im in the Reston area and belong to 1757. I am always up for traveling the MD/VA/DC area to meet up for some golf. Try to play a couple times a week and I am a club builder as well.

I frequent 1757, Raspberry, VA Oaks, Bristow Manor, Quantico, PB, Falls Road, Reston as my normal spots. But have played a bunch around the area and will pretty much play anywhere.

Look me up if you want to head out!
