What's your opinion of Golfsmith's stuff (Snake Eyes, XPC, etc.)?

I have and still do proudly play Snake Eyes stuff. I still have a set of 600xc's, 600W's, and a couple of S.E. hybrids in the bag now.

Every company has their strengths and weaknesses. IMO, what Golfsmith has traditionally done well with their S.E. line is...

1. Irons
2. Wedges
3. Hybrids
4. Putters

Drivers, I've always felt there was better value in other component companies, particularly during the heyday of the Integra, Bang, Ashton, SMT, Alpha days. The golfballs are just old discontinued brands like Topflite 3000's with a Snakes Eyes logo on them.

Lately, they seem to be backing out of the component business. They seemed to have outsourced their design to Jeff Sheets' company, and their cast irons are too high compared to other companies like Hireko.

Still, I just built my 13 year old a set of S.E. Python XLD irons, and I'd probably play the 685x's and their tour putter if they made them in LH.

Snake Eyes are quality components, as good or better than any OEM out there. I do wonder sometimes though, if their best days are behind them.

Who here has owned a set of the old Golfsmith Tour Cavity Forged that I believe was desgned by Tom Wishon? The same iron Scott Verplank used to win on tour. I had a set and loved them. I am actually looking to get into club building Thinking of building a set of Maltby Forged TE cavity backs as they kind of remind me of the Tour Cavity Forged.

I've had 2 Golfsmith drivers. The first, I cracked the face in the first 9 holes I played with it. The second was the shortest driver I have ever hit. My TM Bubble 3-wood was going farther.

That said, I played their Jet stream Tour irons for years and they were great. Also built several other iron sets for friends/family and they performed well.
Haven't like their aesthetics in recent years, and have switched to Hireko Acer XF Pro irons. I tried a hybrid from Hireko, and it sucked. Component woods and me apparently don't mix

My XPC-3000 3 Wood is my favorite club in my bag, very long and accurate. I used to use all XPC clubs but was too young to know if they were good clubs or not.

One person that I play golf regularly has all Golfsmith Snake Eyes and Viper stuff. He can drive the ball 300+ yards with his Viper driver, and it's held up pretty well. His father is seriously into clubmaking and buys and plays Golfsmith stuff all the time. They both tell me that the staff in the clubmaking department are more knowledgeable and easier to deal with than those in the sales department.

One item that Golfsmith made does stand out in my mind.....the 1K driver. My friend's father let me use the 1K at a driving range once. Super easy to hit, but it was so large that it made it hard to swing.

I had some of those as well, great clubs.

Have and really like the 685 bx wedges, nothing wrong with the quality of most of their stuff. I will say that I have played maltby irons and snake eyes wedged and putter for a long time. As far as components are concerned I think with the higher quality stuff like snake eyes or the maltby (mmb might be the best iron I have ever hit) there is no quality difference in the irons and wedges, hard to find a good component putter (other than the snake eyes top of the line ones) also hard to find a good componant wood or driver in my experience, however I have not tried many of the woods or drivers because i can get a last years model driver from an oem for about the same price as it would cost me to build a nice one with componants so I never really could see the point.

Funny. I'm getting ready to put a GS 1K driver in the BST. It is massive. Was great for years in our golf outings, though.

Love snake eyes .. If anyone has 685bx wedges ill take them.. Or thwarting forged 600/675 series ill take those irons.. I play almost all snake eyes.. Basically 3iron thru putter and love having backups
