nicklaus JNP Mac VIP Goodwill finds

Recommended Posts

Took them for test drive tonight
At local Goodwill I found a very nice set of Macgregor Nicklaus JNP forged 1-sw Irons , S300 shafts and Macgregor VIP 1,3,5 persimmon woods.
Took them out for 9 tonight. really nice clubs!! Matching serial numbers, very little play on all clubs
Sand wedge was great club, very surprising for a cavity back,

Putter used was Wood Art, a recent garage sale find

Man... that is crazy. I have been in a lot of Goodwills and have never seen anything approaching that level of quality vintage gear! Lucky you!!

I realize now why I like them so much, especially the sw, these have square grooves. I have always played blades so really never felt the difference. Also the serial numbers start with JN which is different than other sets like these I have seen. I have another set of these which has completely different type of seraial numbers They were for sure special ordered with the 1 iron and sw having matching numbers.
I like to quote Ben Hogan regarding Goodwills, garage sales etc. The more I practice,(or go to them), the luckier I get![

So do they have "sg" on the toe? I have a couple of sets of square groove Muirfield 20ths, and they're great. Great find!

Yes they have the SG on the upper right corner of the face

  • 2 weeks later...

the rings around the hosel also denote Square (3 rings) or V grooves (2 rings) For instance, I have a set of the JNP's (my first set of irons, found them tossed out with garbage in Manhattan walking home from work) and the sand-wedge (my favorite) has worn through the grooves in the center. This wedge did not have SG on teh face yet it does have three rings on the hosel and the grooves are/were large and deep/square. The iron set I have is also almost 1/2 inch shorter than my TM 300 forged irons which are "standard"

The Jnp irons were the first ones I ever broke 80 with, and I can still hit them really well, keeping the 7 iron and wedge in my car for practice purposes!

IMO, if they gave these to most people starting in golf, we would see alot more people strike the ball solid within the first few months. These things are very shallow irons (high on the face goes NOWHERE) and require a solid strike and level angle of attack, the soles are THIN and the Leading edge is DEAD FLAT STRAIGHT, no room for coming in flat/upright, better have these tuned into your lie if your gonna play more than a quick 9 with em!
