Best off-the-deck 3 wood

Recommended Posts

Looking for opinions on the best off the deck 3 wood. I currently have a 904, and am happy with it, but looking for something to launch a little higher and easier off the deck (not that the 904 is difficult though)...really, i must admit just looking for another 3 wood to have in the collection. Also, would like to pair it with a good 13* if you have any opinions on these as well.

I very rarely hit 3w off a tee, even on the tee box, I play it off the deck.

A Cleveland demo days is coming next week to atlanta, so I'm thinking about trying the hibore. How's the 906 off the deck?

Thanks

Grum is right, the Sonartec stuff is great off the deck, solid and long. If you like your 904, you should look at the 906F2. I find it just as easy off the deck like my SS 3.5, but I hit a lot of 3 Wood off the tee and prefer the 906. Once I got my 906 set-up with the right shaft, it is by far the best all-around 3w I've ever played. Another easy one OTD is the TM R7 Steel. I played one for the last couple months, and it was always money. As far as the HiBore, for me, I couldn't e-bay it fast enough. It has a fairly rolled leading edge that for me didn't work well OTD. Just my opinion though.

I still contend that the best 3 wood off the deck is a 4 wood. I have always struggled with height off the fairway with a 3 wood and made the move to a 4 wood 7 years ago. With a Sonartec! Yep...ss-03 #4 worked great for me for 7 years...

Just made the switch to another 4 wood....Sonartec 3.5.

But wait...this does not make sense...Sonartec? Those low hitting woods only for low handicappers with high ball flight? YUP!

Try a Sonartec 3.5 4 wood...it's magical.

BTW...I hate the low profile woods. I have a tendency to get steep when I am going after it. If you sweep...try the 2.5.

I think once you try the Hi-Bore, your answer will be easy--it's money from the fariway!

though you did mention the Halo hybrid???

Yeah, I realized that I said Halo instead of Hibore, so I did edit that.

Hmm??? That may be a great idea...probably not much distance loss taking into account more carry with a 4...I'll have to look around.

I've never had much consistancy with FW woods off the deck until I tried my F-50 / Purple Ice 85 combo, it's so darn easy for me to hit well that I just picked up a used F-50 5 wood. It's also offered in 13.5 degree strong 3 and 16.5 degree 4 wood.

The adams have been the easiest for me off the deck and I have tried several.

Regarding the adams...are these the redline or the low profile redline? I like the sound of the low profile redline tour...I think I'll try out the SS, hibore, 906, and adams...

wheres the love for the G5????? I have one with a V2 75 X and its a CANNON off the deck..........

I'll second that. Played my G5 15º/V2 76 stiff combo today. Didn't have a situation to hit it off the deck, but it was money (literally) off the tee. Can't say the feel is anything that will win awards, but it flat out bombs it and is also easy to hit from off the deck or a tee. The bigger head size is a blessing when using a 460cc driver. The visual difference isn't as great at address. Sits square. Easy to aim head with the half moon and alignment features on the face.

The 906F is a great stick too. Very long, and not too tough to hit off the deck. Mid ballflight for me. G5 is a little higher and a little easier to hit and elevate. Very workable. A little more demanding off the deck than the 904 (although the NV75 may be to blame for that,) but off the tee it's visually confidence-inspiring. I'm thinking about a Purple Ice in this one.

One of the easiest to elevate combos I have is an old Cleveland Launcher steel 15º (the ones that came with the gold shaft) paired with a Purple Ice 85 stiff. Easy off the deck and enough of a face that it isn't daunting off a tee. Sits square. .335 hosel. Hot feeling face. Very underrated club and a steal at the prices you can get them at.

I also have the Adams LP Tour 16º with a Prolaunch 75x. Yep. Easy off the deck. Not bad off the tee, just need more time with it. Sits a little open at address, which is nice when I'm fighting the lefts. Good combo though. I've hit the actual "Tour" Adams 4060 and while not the same in feel/sound at all, performance did seem fairly similar. Little flatter flight with the actual Tour clubs, although the shaft difference likely accounted for that (Fit-on-something Fuji in the 14.5º 4060 I hit today.)

My advice for a great "off the deck" wood would be a wood with a midface, NOT deepface, like the T-60 and SS-3.5. The deepfaced are very good off the tee and for great ball strikers these are also great from the fairway - but if you want an easy to launch wood off the deck, skip the advice from the guys who recommend deep faced woods. I would look at:

1. Titleist 906F

2. Taylor Made R7 Steel

3. Taylor Made R7 Ti Tp

4. Sonartec SS-2.5

5. Mizuno F-50

The Hibore 5 wood is so good that I pulled a FT Hybrid 17 degree. The 5 wood is easier hit off of the deck , longer and straighter. I didn't ever see a 5 wood in my bag again.

The 3 wood is only very slightly harder to hit than the 5 wood. It is close to automatic. The Ping TEC was always the most forgiving 3 wood that I had owned. Because of their large size, they were a little less than optimal from real tight lies or rough. The Hibore 3 wood is as forgiving as the TEC but much better from tight lies or rough. Cleveland has the best fairway out right now. In addition, you can get it with a premium shaft at no upcharge. My Callaway X 4 wood with Prolaunch is a fine wood. The X has to be as good as anything Callaway has produced. THe HiBore 3 wood is easier to hit than that 4 wood!

I'm also looking for a new 3 and 5 wood, I was thinking a 13* and 17*. I still haven't hit the hibore but like all of the posts before me I've heard many good things. It also helps that they dropped in price so much so I think I'll just get from my proshop. I'll let you know how it is if I get it anytime soon.
