Golf Shops to visit in SD/LA area

Recommended Posts

Hey guys... I'm traveling to the LA/SD area next week and I was wondering what golf shops other than Roger Dunn should I visit? Living in the Northeast, I am used to very generic shops so I am hoping to see some really nice shops with an amazing selection.

I do plan on visiting the Golf Galaxy near San Diego after my round at Torrey Pines but I was hoping to add other shops to this list to visit.

I am starting my trip by staying in the Thousand Oaks area>South Coast Plaza>San Diego>Somewhere near (within 30 min of) LAX.

Thanks for the tips in advance :friends:

2 stores i would definitely visit is the Roger Dunn in Santa Ana. They have every OEM there with a fitting studio. Also carry tons of Travis Matthew, but also carry all the major clothing lines except JL.

In SD I would visit Fairway Golf. Nice little store with lots of good stuff in it. Golf Galaxy off Carmel Mtn. Road is so-so. Usual stuff nothing of interest.

There's a GolfSmith Extreme in Irvine but I didn't think it was anything special, probably similar to the Golf Galaxy. Roger Dunns in Santa Ana is a good stop, all the latest clothing .

Very curious to see a Golfsmith Extreme... its 15 minutes from my hotel in Costa Mesa... I will be visiting this store

Go to roger Dunn in Santa Ana instead. There's nothing that goldsmith extreme in lake forest carries that roger Dunn doesn't. The selection of used clubs is amazing there.

I am going to Roger Dunn, Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy and The Club Fix... any other suggestions?
There's a nice little shop in Costa Mesa called Eagle USA Golf. www.eagleusa.com. Lots of cool Scotty Cameron stuff.

And I'll echo to not waste your time at the Golf Galaxy in SD. They have the normal stuff, and the inventory level they carry now is quite a bit less than a couple years ago. The Golf Mart in San Diego's Mission Valley area probably has the biggest selection of everything golf related in the San Diego area (don't go to the Golf Mart in Del Mar, as it is tiny).

Adding to the list of places not to visit is Golfsmith in the Mission Valley area. It is literally a couple of blocks from Golf Mart.

Can anybody comment on Roger Dunn in West LA (Bundy Drive)?
It will be the shop which will be the easiest for me to go to in the first few days of my vacation in April. Rather than taking my own clubs or renting clubs, I thought about buying used or clearance clubs for the four weeks I will be in the US.
Would this be a good place to go for that?

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

The West LA store is not as stocked as the Santa Ana store, but it is RD's second biggest store. Lots of demo'ed and used stuff in there to choose from. The North Hollywood store is brand new and they've got a decent selection of used as well, though not as much as WLA.

Do I have a chance to get a driver, a 4- or 5-wood, irons 4-PW, a 54° or 56° wedge and a putter (11 clubs in all) in decent condition for about $ 500 there?
I was hoping it should be possible to get away with
Driver $ 100
Fairway wood $ 70
Irons $ 250
Wedge $ 50
Putter $ 50
That would be $ 520 total.
Is that realistic for something in decent condition?
I can play pretty much everything, as long as the irons do not have ProjectX shafts, the driver has a loft of at least 10.5° and the woods do not have Graffaloy pro launch shafts in them.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Just got back from Bogey bobs and Roger Dunn in Thousand Oaks.
BBs had little and RD had a great used club selection but wayyyyy over priced...much better deals on the BST forum by far

That's the plan tomorrow when I get to costa Mesa.... Will it be a different experience?

the roger dunn is west LA isnt bad.. lots of used inventory to try out in a large demo area. would also recommend plaza golf (I go to the one in West LA on Olympic/Sepulevda). Super nice staff and they cram a TON of stuff including a big Scotty collection in a small relatively small space. There's a glass case in the middle with a lot of the limited Scottys.

TaylorMade Stealth 10.5
Titleist 906F4
TaylorMade Stealth 3 Hybrid
Mizuno JPX850 Forged 4-PW
TaylorMade MG3 Black 52/56

Scotty Phantom X7
.. and a collection of Odyssey #7s 🙂

They have basically every retail club, accessory and shirt on thr market. Not to much tour or JDM other than some custom Scotties. Huge used club selection, but don't expect to beat BST prices, but they have an unlimited 90 day return policy (not much help for you). I have never been to any LA stores, SA is about the size of a super market.

Did you get in touch with The Club Fix?

Best thing about the Dunn store in west LA is Kevin Moore the club repair guy. Make sure you see and talk to him just a bit about anything golf and golf experience related. Yes, it is realistic to get the clubs you need there, but the used club prices are high retail mark-up.....but lots of drivers, wedges, hybrids, putters and iron sets to choose from. That said, try to see a store manager and try making an offer on a used set you'd want to play with....often it will just sit there and not be purchased unless someone does make a realistic, but lower offer. After all, they get sick of staring at the used clubs in inventory and would like to move it out the door. Cash flow in retail, you know? If you can make it to Pasadena, see Crown City Golf on Green Street. Richard has many used clubs at $29, $39, $49, $59, $69, etc. It's a small shop but I picked up two Vokey spin milled wedges there with Steefiber shafts in them for $59 each and a TM R510TP w/Speeder shaft for $49!! Also, he is currently having a sale of 20-30% off of those used club prices!! Best of luck and have a great visit!
