If you dont like McCormick Woods you are crazy. It might just be too tough for you. great track.... Another course that needs more love is Kayak Point. In the middle of nowhere and its not in great shape but the shot values are unmatched as far as public courses go in the seattle area
I like Kayak as well except for about 3 holes. #9, 10 and 11. Otherwise great layout.

You like hole 7? Hmmmm....any down hill hole is cool, but I cannot count how many drives I have hit there that I thought was ok and then turn out to be not. I agree with you on the other three. Funny, use to play there a fair amount when it opened and never thought much about those holes or others till you go back 25 years later and say...WTF were they thinking!
Yeah, I forgot about that one. It's pretty funky as well. I love how a 100yrd lob wedge can't stay on the green unless the pin is all the way back. LOL

UPDATE: April 2014

GolfWeek magazine just updated its list of Top Ten Best public-access courses in the State of Washington.

Suncadia Prospector and Indian Canyon (Spokane) have dropped off the list !!!!

Salish Cliffs has jumped onto the list at #3 (!). Bear Mountain Ranch in Chelan snuck onto the list at #10.

From what I have read and heard, the Suncadia courses are far superior to Bear Mountain Ranch.

Agree??

The list was ridiculous... missing all of the public Suncadia courses is a huge oversight. Once Gamble Sands opens, that should be on the list as well.

Indian Canyon has no business on that list. Used to be a great old course, but the conditions are worsening every year. I'm not sure how they'll even play the Rosauers there this year.

my personal best Seattle area publics, in order:

1. Chambers Bay

2. Gold Mountain (Olympic)

3. White Horse (only played it recently, after it was 'softened'. Some days I think it is unfair; other days love it. It's easily the most challenging WA course I've played)

4. Salish Cliffs (Shelton)

5. Home Course

6. McCormick Woods

7. Trophy Lake

8. Port Ludlow (Tide/Timber)

9. Newcastle (China Creek)

haven't played Washington National, Newcastle - Coal Creek, or Druids Glen

[off topic: for me, Wine Valley is the best in state]

100% but I will just say Prospector for now as I only have 1 round in at Rope Rider once and it did not stand out to me that day.

Bear Mountain Ranch is highly overrated IMHO. The back nine is OK, but the front nine is very poor even with a few OK par 3's on it. I think Desert Canyon is a much better track.

I cannot vote for "any" Oki course in "any" top tens other then a Top Ten View Course and Coal Creek would make that list.

I saw that course rating flyer in our pro shop the other day.

I also 100% agree that Prospector is a better course than Bear. We just got back from our annual MastersMadness trip to Chelan and played 36 a Bear and Desert, although fun courses the conditions at Prospector are always top notch. The layout of Rope Rider is a little to bland to be considered a top 10 but again the grounds crew over at Suncadia are on point.

B, any reason why you do not play Chelan Muni?

Although not close to Seattle per se, about 3 hours east, but has anyone here played Moses Pointe in Moses Lake? I love that place. I've played it 3 times and found it to be in incredible shape every time. There were a lot of fun holes and the weather is always awesome in eastern Washington.

I have played several of the nicer courses in this state but not all. I can attest to the excellence of Prospector, Trophy Lake, WA Natl, and Gold Mountain Olympic though. I personally would leave Newcastle (Coal) off of my top courses list. It's so hilly and albeit kept in magnificent condition, I didn't like that so many shots are on awkward lies. Anyhow, I would clearly add Moses Pointe though.
