Mainly on dialing in distance control on chips and pitches, trying to get everything within a couple feet. I also do a putting drill every time I practice. 25 in a row from 1 putter lenth (miss and start all over), 9/10 from 2 putter lengths, 8/10 from 3 putter lengths. I don't leave the putting green until I complete it.

I am currently focusing on my short game. I usually hit about 300 balls around a small practice green working from about 15-yards and under. I would like to work from 50-yards, but the practice area I use can't accomodate that distance. I have terrible control with my irons and driver right now (slow leak right), so I miss a lot of greens.

When Im on the range I warm up with some wedges then try to get them more dialed in, then say about 5-10 7 irons then 5-10 4 irons. I always try to end on a good note. Then I work my way into the driver and just practise getting a good ball flight. Some times a work on working the ball a bit. When Im done I have about half or 1/4 the bucket of balls left and i go to the short game area and work on bunker shots, short chips, flops ect. Then sometimes ill pace off 25 and 50 yds and hit shots from there to get dialed in. On the putting green I do the phil mickelson drill and then ill put from about 15-20 ft and put a club about 2 ft past the hole and try to get the ball to go past the hole if I miss but not hit the club 2 ft past, works on my distance control. Thats about it.

On occassion, when I am done with all my other practice, I play a round on the Driving Range. I take the course i usually play at and play it hole by hole. I make my own "fairway" out in the distance and use imaginary boundaries. If I miss/hit the fairway, I hit to a "green" they have out in the Range and if I miss the green, I chip out to a closer "green" thats marked. Then i just give myslef a 2 Putt. It gets pretty fun and is the next best thing when I can't get on the course. Enjoy

If I'm preparing for a tournament, I'll work on moving my driver left and right a certain amount and work from 100 yards and in.

I used to have a horrible in and out swing, so before the snow came i spent just about all my time trying to keep my club on a single plane. I have hit an enormous amount of shots with one arm lately and it has made terrific improvements in my swing. I used to fade/slice everything, and now i draw it a little unitl i get up my 4 iron, hit 4 and 3 iron pretty straight and then slightly fade my driver & woods.

How many will actually 'play a round' in their head, while on the driving range?

I don't play a whole round in my head, but I will normally play 3 holes at my local course in my head that are very very difficult for me. Very long and accuacy is a premium b/c each has trouble running across the failway if you hit it too far, etc. I will normally do that once in a while when I'm not working on my fundamentals and working on what I learned at my last lesson.

Thanks,

I work mostly from 100 yds and in and around the greens with my short game and imagination. I also hit balls on the range but just mostly for muscle memory and solid contact at a target. That being said I play a lot more than I practice. Why? Because I love to play the game. When I go to the course its dot to dot golf. I acknowledge my target. Vision the shot and execute. I do not bring one swing thought to the course. I play the game! Natural Golf by the way!

This is my shortgame one (1/3).

I hit the pitching green first because allthe shots are within say 60 yards its easier to loosen up

I like this as a pre-round warm up, but don't usually do it in practice sessions.

Practice is usually putting, short game, then a progression through the irons with some drives interspersed between the irons.

All the time. I'll go thru all 18 at a couse I choose for the day. But before that, I work on fundamentals. Finding the bottom of my swing, rhythm, and half way back and thru are also important to me.

I'd practice one-quarter, half way, three quarter shots with LW, SW, PW and dial in the distances for those, pinpointing my shot to a specific ball I pick out on the range.

Don't often work on putting because the putting green at my range runs 7 on the stimp. It's ridiculous.

I go to the range and mainly work on ball striking. I'll mix and match and hit one shot with one club, three with the next and so on. What I'm looking for is making good contact with the same consistant swing.

I always save a third of my basket for chipping-just measuring distances with my wedges with quarter, half, and three quarter swings.

To finish I'm on the putting green till it gets dark.

  • 1 year later...

For me, I mainly practice with my woods. I have noticed that days that I never take out the driver are the days that I shoot my best rounds (75-80). I am only 15 years old so I think that it is very important to find my acuracy with the woods before I lose my flexibility. When I take out the big dog (Original Burner) that I tend to miss fairways and have trouble keeping my scores down. When I get within 100 yards in two shots, I rarely make any others. that is why I practice with my woods.

Mike, I've done that a number of times. What's interesting is two things:

You practice a lot of shots- just once, no do-overs- that you might not otherwise practice. Hit a hooked drive, where did it end up? Do I need a punch under trees? Another big hook?

I haven't yet firgured out how to do this and simulate chipping and putting while playin an imaginary round.

My practice has gotten more and more focused over the years. At this point - I can play most of my clubs pretty consistantly (beginners probably need to practice with every club in every session, but I've been playing for 40 years) ...

What I've discovered over time is that the way to program memory is by a lot of repitition that is not confused by anything else. In other words, for example, think of this - you have a given 8 practice sessions for irons, and in each you'll hit 200 balls. Now, you can either hit 25 balls a session with each of the 3-PW, or, you can take each session, and hit all 200 balls with a single club. In each scenerio, after those 8 sessions, you would have hit the same numer of balls with each iron. I'd argue, however, that the model in which you shoot 200 a day with a single club programs memory for that club far more effectively than 25 a session with each club (all of which precede and follow 25 with other clubs).

...

Interesting post, midas. I'm a beginner, so was hoping you could elaborate a little on why you believe a beginner should hit every club, rather than the same club the whole session. I don't disagree... I just don't know. I've been told that it is the same basic swing with every club, so shouldn't the memory of, say, a 7 iron transfer at least sort of to a 3 wood? Or are they really all different? The drive of course seems different, because it's the only one you tee up.

Anyway, I was just curious. I'm going to sign up for weekly lessons in April.
