Adams XTD 3T Fairway..."tour" only

Recommended Posts

Since I haven't seen this posted yet I thought I'd share pics of my new Adams XTD 3T fairway wood. The 3T is a "tour" only model designating it as the 16* 3 wood. From what I was told and from what many are now experiencing, the XTD fairway woods and hybrids are REALLY long...making it tough for the PGA players to fill the gap in their bags. The 16* model fills the gap better then the 14.5 heads because it doesn't go as far as their drivers!

I haven't had a chance to test it out much yet. I'm still trying to figure out a shaft for it. I've currently got a Fujikura Rombax Type X in it. Although I still love my Adams LP...the Gwrx "ho" in me had to try out something new. ;)

Nice, Reid! What weight do you have in there? Must be SUPER long if the pros are asking for 16*. LOL

I just got an F11 5 wood slightly used for $75 and it's great so far - long and pretty forgiving, especially on hits low on the face. Hearing all the talk about these new FW's makes me wish I had disposable income to get the fancy new stuff though. vava.gif

It's a Rombax Type X 75X that I had sitting around. Since I'm playing tomorrow and wanted to get the head shafted up I stuck it in. If it doesn't work well, I'll start thinking harder about what to put in it.

And yes...if you'v ever hit the XTD Hybrid 15*...that alone makes me think a 3 wood is unnecessary.

yeah i got one of these the other day in a 1300SS, these things are sweet fairways

Yup...my 1300SS should be arriving next week. ;)

From a performance standpoint, Adams has been making super long fwys since before the BTY...my only problem with their newer lines is that thing on the crown...I can't make myself like looking at that....but I also can't make myself buy something called Rocketballz either...guess I'll just stick to my FT tour...

LOL..I thought the same when I first saw their clubs with the slot. The local rep is a great friend of mine and no matter what he told me, I kept going back to the slot and telling him, "Why??? and Yuck!!!" He just kept telling me, "Reid..you might not like the look of the slot but you're surely going to like how your ball flies". I bought the LP and that was all it took to forget about the slot and like the results of that slot. Shortly after I bought the A12 HB. Now with this XTD..I'm all over the looks and only want to see the results.

Why, oh Why?!?!?!? I hit my XTD 14.5* on Saturday for the first time. I was thinking about replacing my driver with it. Yes, it is that long, and I was more accurate with it. Now you have me considering the 3T whenever it shows up on the BST (and we all know that it will show up eventually :man_in_love: )

All I need is multiple $300+ woods in my bag...

Callaway Rogue ST Max - Tensei AV White - 8*
Taylormade M3 HL - MFS5 White Tie 60S -0.75" (42.5")

Mizuno JPX 923 HMP - 4-G - Recoil 95 S - 2* upright

Callaway X-JAWS - 52/58*

Odyssey OWorks 2ball  -  34" - 1* loft - 71* lie
Slighter Proto 1 #9/Del Mar design - High Toe - Long neck - Deep Milled face - 33", 370gr, lie 71*, loft 4*

As much as I loved the ease of my Adams LP, I'm starting to believe much of the forgiveness of that head came from the velocity slots...yes I'm still the fairway wood challenged player I was in my LP review but this new XTD might have kicked it out of the bag.

I first found out about the XTD's when speaking to one of the Adams PGA Reps at the Sony Open. He went on and on about how great it was, how long it was, how easy it was to hit, lower center of gravity, easy to flight, hottest head on the market and hottest they've ever created, Pro's are loving it, Pro's are hitting longer then their drivers, Pro's need better drivers and should switch to Adams! :D Yes, everything every rep and club commercial says. I always take what I hear and go "yup...we'll see later on the course". Of my friends I'm one of the quickest to yell BS when I hear about the newest and greatest. Maybe it's because of years of ho-ing everything with absolutely zero loyalty to any company. It's given me a large idea of what everyone else has/making and what I want in a club. Of course being a ho...even if you think it's BS..you've got to try it.

One of the shops go to regularly got the XTD Super Fairways and Hybrids demo's about a month ago. I borrowed a 14.5* fairway thinking I'd never get it off the ground (fairway wood challenged and all) and also borrowed a 15* hybrid, 17* hybrid, 19* hybrid. Yes..they're a really good shop and they know my purchasing habits so they tend to allow me to demo a ton. I went to the range that night and was pretty amazed how I was hitting all of the clubs. Particularly the 14.5* Super Fairway. Fairwood challenged me was actually elevating it instead of skidding line drives into the 100 yard sign as expected. Still, I wasn't convinced. I needed to hit it in real world conditions on grass! I went back to the golf shop on a Friday intending to borrow the SF for my usual Saturday round but it had already been taken out. The only club left was a 19* hybrid so I borrowed that. It was as easy to hit as my A12 but so much longer. It was nice to be able to choke down a bit and swing it just as far as my old hybrid. It actually filled the gap much better then my old A12 between my 3 iron and LP/3wood. After my round, I put in an order for 19* head. It was an easy decision on a club I knew I had to have.

The following week, the 14.5 SF was available so I took it out for a spin. I still wasn't convinced on it. I know my limitations and have never been able to hit a 14.5 head consistently. I ended up hitting it off the tee much of the day to get more hits then the four times I'd be using it on the Par 5's. Again, I was as impressed with this head as I was when I took it to the range. After my round I went back to the golf shop and was talking to the owner about the club. He know's my hatred of 3 woods and mentioned he'd ordered a few 16*/Tour heads that he thought might be right up my alley. He said I'd get plenty of distance because the head was hot and the added loft would convince me mentally that I wouldn't be hitting line drives all over the place. Me being the easy sale accepted his offer to put me on the waiting list.

Well my 3T/16* head arrived the other day and I put it in play today. Luckily the course I played today had some decent par 5's for me to test it on. Decent meaning pretty darn wide open and I could swing pretty much with no fear. I pured 2 of the shots with the 3T and actually amazed myself with the shots as they both left me near the fringe of the greens. The 3rd I actually caught thin and still was able to get a decent trajectory out of it and decent yards leaving me with 125 to the green. The 4th I actually tried to bunt it with a fade as the hole wasn't too long but dog legged. I caught it a little thin but the ball moved very nicely leaving me with 55 yards to the green. I used the 3T off the tee twice and was again, very pleased with the workability and distance.

So far the 3T is very close to making me kick out the LP permanently. I'll give it another month of use until I abandon thoughts of the LP resuming a place in my bag. For the moment though..I'm pretty darn happy with the Super Fairway.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend demo'ing the Super Fairway. Not the prettiest but you'll love the results.

That might be right up my alley. I may be one of the few, but I really was not overly impressed with either the fairway or hybrid out of the gate. I seemed to me that the stock Fubuki Alpha was, really weak, at least in the stiff I tried. I am going to give it another go, but I wonder if Adams might not soft step the shaft or install them a bit weak to flex?

Did you find the 3t to be easier to hit and elevate off the deck? Also, how did the distance compare to the 14.5 head. One more thing, how do u compare these to the RBZ fairway woods...thanks pitbul

Excellent review. I was very impressed when i saw the Super XTD lineup come out and it really sparked my interest but like you, I absolutely hate hitting FW's, probably because of all the inconsistency I've had hitting them off the deck so I actually ditched my FW. After reading your review on it I might just have to give it another chance. I guess the only other thing that scares me is the price tag lol... but that's golf for ya.

Only one day of testing so far with the 3T as stated. I was able to use it to my satisfaction hitting a variety of shots. I didn't hit the 14.5 and 16* side by side. Comparing these to the RBZ...I didn't like the RBZ. I didn't like the feel of the head and didn't think it was any better then the R11 fw's I had prior to my Adams LP and A12.

So, is the 3T readily available? It's not listed on the Adams website.
[/quote]

It's not and unless they change their mind after seeing interest on it here, will not be. It's a "TOUR ONLY" designation. The retail heads are available....just with different lofts.

Ha ha, I feel the same...although I'm getting a bit more used to seeing it. I don't own one, but as anal as I am about keeping clubs clean, seeing grass or dirt in the slot everytime I address the ball might drive me crazy.

I will be getting one when I get back to Hawaii. No one in Nebraska had one and no one in Georgia has one. I hope AGC has one ready. I might just have to demo it first to make sure on the loft I want.
