HOT MELTING A DRIVER ???

Moose knuckle

Recommended Posts

Hi, I currently play a TM superdeep 8.5 TP with whiteboard 73 x.. Absolutley love everything about it, except for the sound, it's very high pitch. I talked to a few guys at my local course about using hot melt on a driver, one guy has done it to his burner, and the sound was so nice, I really loved it. But, the other guy is my club maker who said he has hot melted drivers in the past, he told me it's not worth it- it's more of a hassle... So Im just looking for some feedback from guys who have had this done or are looking to do it ? should this be done professionally ? I've even heard guys putting cotton in there driver heads, would this offer the same results as hot melt ? Any advise will help, thanks so much.

For hot melting you can either remove the head and drill out the plug in the hosel and then add the weight with a syringe. You can also drill a small hole in the head and insert the syringe through the hole (recommended if you have an experienced club builder doing the work) - you'll see most Callaway and Titleist drivers have a small black plug in the sole. As long as you buy the proper hardware it is pretty easy to do and the location of the hot melt can be moved with a bit of heat applied to the sole.

Cotton balls do work for dampening the sound of the driver as well. They won't work as well as hot melt but will put you in the right direction. As with everything, you need to be careful and look at weights to make sure you keep your swing weight in check.

I have Titleist D3 and wanted to increase head weight as well as dampen sound due to shaft length change. I bought yarn, weighed what amount I needed, and inserted it into head through the swingweight port in the sole of the club. Can easily be removed if you decide to do that, and pretty inexpensive to do. I used a kitchen type gram scale to weigh components.

I have never heard of adding yarn. But do like the idea of it. It would be easier to remove than cotton if need be... was they're anything you didn't like after adding the yarn ? and did the weight feel better, as to adding lead tape? or buying heavier weights for the toe or heel?

Do you know if there is sound differences between hot melt or cotton? My buddies driver had this amazing kind of " THWAK " sound too it, I just fell in love with that sound when I heard it.

I wanted to increase headweight 10 grams so I added yarn. It went into head through the Titleist swingweight port. It did make the driver sound better, more or the "thwack" rather than a tinny or metallic sound. I also needed weight to increase so swingweight would be what I wanted with shorter length shaft. Best 4.00 investment I made.

I went to Joanns fabrics after work yesterday, got me some real fluffy yarn- martha stewart brand lol . I took out one of the wieghts on the superdeep, and put the yarn in thru there- took about a half hour, I left a little stran hanging out- so if i end up not liking it, i can just pull all the yarn out- and go a different route...But I really like the feel of the wieght now, feels different and better from just adding lead tape to the head, feels really solid. I havn't hit it yet, i will try it out tonight after work, im pretty excited to see the results.. I will write back tomarrow on my results

The spray foam is hard to get out though if you don't like it, and hard to weigh. The cotton balls did make a noticeable difference in the sound thougj

There are guys right on our board that will do the hotmelt job for you. I have had one of them do it for me. Very fair price and fast return of the head back to me. I see not trouble or hassle in a hotmelt service.
Where would I go to find one of these guys ? and did you like the job that was done on your driver ? how did the driver sound after ? and lastly, once the hot melt has been done to your driver, does it ever need maintance ? or is it just 1 and done service ?

I've never done any of these things before (hot melt, yarn, cotton balls etc.)......but just from reading this, the one that seems to make the most sense to try would be the yarn option. It would seem like it would be pretty easy to remove if you decided it wasn't for you. Thoughts????

I have an RBZ tour that is very light and LOUD......I might try the yarn option but I want to hear more from the giuys that tried it......

6 cotton balls in a D3 worked like a charm. It sounds awesome. I couldn't believe how much better it sounded.
So I went to the range last night, I hit my driver... the sound was great !! I might of put to much yarn inside the head though, cause the swing weight was up there, I'd guess maybe D8- just a little much for my liking. So im gonna take some yarn out today and try again, till I find that happy medium--- but sound was great !

it's def worth trying, I put the yarn in, but let the stran hang out slightly so I could remove If I needed too.... I love the sound of it now!! I just need to work on the weight- will take some yarn out tonight ( i did put a lot in ) and I could even add a tape wrap under the grip to lower the wieght also. I usually play 4 wraps under my irons and wedges, but like my wood grips a little thinner. But this experiment is paying off, im loving the sound of my driver.

would you not feel the cotton/yarn move around in the head during a swing?

I have cut down 1.25* on my R11 driver (SW = D4) to make it 44.5". Anyone knows how much weight I need to add to the head to bring SW back to D4? I have a small scale so I can measure it. Thinking about adding an insulation material to the head...

Not likely. if concerned, use Polyfill. Only about 4 gms fills the entire head. I have 5 gms in a 910.D3 and can't feel it even when trying.

Are you guys serious? Putting yarn, cotton, insulation, etc... in a driver head.....WTF
Damn straight! I must have 15 cotton balls in my i25 head. I wanted something to dull the incredible high pitch it had without adding a ton of weight. Cotton balls did the trick very, very well.

And no, you can't feel anything moving around in the head while swinging it to those asking.

1.25" would be about 7 points, or right around there as I think it's 6 points per inch. So you'd need to add roughly 14g to get the swing weight back up to where it was prior to the chop. In my experience, I'd suggest starting with somewhere around 8-10g and test it out. If you want to add more, you always can. Much harder to take off than add on depending on what you're using.

These are very conventional, do it yourself methods that are cheap and effective.

It seems you are the only person who hasn't heard of this...which may have lead to your WTF comment
